  1. Well, mandriva move loads it fine....but how the heck do I make the windows partiton writable! I have the file but no way to post it!
  2. I'm trying to install Mandriva 2005 LE on an Inspiron 2200, and XOrg won't lad. I've tried several monitors, resolutions, all that stuff with no luck. Anyone get this working or have any ideas? I'm afraid I can't really give you any more details...it's an Intel 915 monitor, and XOrg says it can't find the display, if that helps any.
  3. Woah! Lotta links there! Thanks! Maybe this weekend I'll be able to start screwing with stuff...school just takes all the life out of me...lol
  4. ...yea...I tried it, and it wouldn't install :S I've got 4 OSes on this comp (well, space for four, I believe one of the partitions is currently empty), and two other comps, so if it dies, it dies, no big deal :-P I tried the config programs that come with KDE...but it doesn't appear to have what I need...it's using the wrong soundcard by default and I can't figure out how to change it :S I'll have to dig around in the config files... *opens up find box, types .config* :-P I'll figure it out...or break the comp trying, but hey, it's not too difficult to reinstall :-P And I can't get Swaret to work. They say to just use installpkg...but it won't work because it's a .tgz.tar and installpkg wants just .tgz. I tried renameing it but then installpkg says it's corrupt. I tried opening it with ark and re-saving it, but Ark keeps adding on the .tar. I tried running tar -xzvf but that says it's not a gzip...and I can't find anything on the site explaining what to do!
  5. Ok, ever since 'Mandriva' went 10.0 and stopped working for me for some reason, I've been searching for another distro that works perfectly and is nice to use, and I have found that in Slackware. But I've got a few general questions about it, and I don't know anywhere else to ask them, so... 1) Is there any specific Slackware forums or anything like that? 2) Does Slackware have any kind of Urpmi/Apt-get tool? 3) I can't seem to find any config tools for slackware (like MCC)...does it even have any??? I found a few on their website, but those don't seem to do anything...specifically I'm looking for hardware and tools...stuff like that... 4) It came in 4 CDs...but only used 2...and I tried going through the package installation prog a few times and could never figure out what those other two CDs are for....lol
  6. Is Libranet debian based? If so, cool, if not, there's no way I'm going with Debian...last time I tried I couldn't get the installer figured out :P Might have to give it another shot though... I tried Ubuntu too, but that install failed totally for some reason...
  7. What has happened to the good old Mandrake? You know, the one that WORKED! 9.2 ran. It ran PERFECTLY. I never had a problem not caused by me, and when I did, I posted here and you guys fixed it up in a few hours. 10.1 started OK, but then Gaim got screwy...all the IM protocols disappeared. I tried a urpmi --update, failed. Urpmi --force, failed. Uninstall worked, but then I couldn't reinstall it. I also had to reconfigure my mouse every time I booted up. Both my logitech USB mouse, and my Micro innovations PS/2 mouse, and my compaq PS/2 mouse. The compaq one isn't even wireless! IT'S A PS/2 MOUSE WITH A WHEEL! NOTHING ELSE! HOW MUCH MORE SIMPLE CAN YOU GET! I can give you a list of OSes with which all of those worked. Windoze 98 and XP, home and pro. Syllable. Morphix. Solaris. BSD. Mandrake 9.2. Etc... Yet 10.1 can't seem to set it up right. I reformatted and reinstalled several times, and ended up with the exact same problems. So finally, I decide that as much as I hate the name Mandriva, I'll give 2005 LE a try. I install it, have to configure the mouse at the end of the install, but it seems to work. I boot up, everything's ok...about 2 minutes later it freezes. I reboot, login, about 3 minutes later the screen goes black and it logs me out. Login again, same thing. Try once more, it freezes again. Yea, I never did ask for help with that, but I haven't gotten a solution ANYWHERE that's fixed any of my problems since 10.1, and this kind of thing just shouldn't happen! Even windoze has never done anything like this. Screw it. As soon as I get it downloaded I'm switching to Libranet. As much as I love Mandrake's features, it's just not worth it. I know, this isn't really the place to be complaining about this...but I gotta post it somewhere...and now you know why I haven't been here in a while (if anyone noticed)...I gave up on Mandrake for a while because of 10.1, and my mom constantly yelling at me for losing her stuff while trying to fix it...now I got my own comp, but I still can't fix it.
  8. I got my new mobo today...and it's all working great...after a lot of trouble with inserting the CPU fan backwards...lol... I cut my finger too at some point apparently...I don't know when, but there's a new cut there, so I'm assuming it's from installing the mobo...but...it's worth it :P
  9. Too late :P I've realized that for 6 PCI slots, AGP, on-board audio and ethernet and all the other crap I want, it should cost more than my CD drive. It's more important. Plus I got a 3 year warranty...which I need...lol
  10. ...crap...I need to be more careful...and a new mobo. It appears that whatever was left of that IDE channel vanished in a brilliant blue spark... ...it was pretty though... :P Both the drives still work...I managed to boot morphix off both on my 5 year old compaq...the BIOS in that detected 'em fine...so I'm pretty sure my mobo was at fault...so I've learned from this several things: 1) wait until it is FULLY shut down before even TOUCHING the power cord (I was getting it close before it had fully shut down because i didn't wanna waste time...and it got a bit too close) 2) Don't buy a cheap mobo (not all of the problems with it were my fault actually...just most :P) 3) If you go to the company's website, and words are overlapping, pages don't exist, and their only form of tech support is a forum with the RMA section locked...that's not a good sign. 4) big blue sparks may be pretty, but they aren't helpful :P So...now I need a new mobo...are MSI and ASUS any good? Here's what I'm looking at right now: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_techspe...masterid=814637 (and I hope to order ASAP...hopefully by the end of the day)
  11. Ok...I've had this problem for a while, but I just kinda assumed/hoped that my secondary drive was screwy. Well, it appears it wasn't. I got brand new DVD drives (drive and burner actually) for my birthday today, and if I have 'em both plugged in...not even the BIOS detects 'em. Windoze will detect that there's SOMETHING there, but every time I go to the 'add hardware wizard' it finds something new, usually named something like 'A @' or 'Co E' or some other weird thing like that, and it only detects one, and if I try to use it, it either says there's no disk or the drive is corrupted. So...is my mobo screwed? Well...screwed more than I already knew....
  12. Well, it appears my CD-Rom drive, of all things, was the problem. Got new drives today, and I can now go to 'My Computer' with no problems. Hopefully the rest will work OK too. Still having problems, look like IDE controller problems, but that's for a different topic.
  13. anything specific I should be looking for here? It all looks ok to me...but...since I don't really understand half of it and don't know what to look for...and it's really big... this is ok, right? ooh...this is bad...I think...'cause my mouse is USB: but wait...later it says... ...im a bit confused....lol no major errors though it appears.
  14. I DLed it, but Nero won't burn it. Gives me an 'Invalid field in command' error... :S
  15. ...yea...small problem there...I believe I fried my floppy controller :S I've got this EVEREST program though...it's got some RAM tests...dunno if it's any good though...just DLed it a few days ago to try to figure this thing out, turns out the only real tests it have appear to be RAM... edit: Well, turns out the EVEREST tests are just benchmarks...none of which I seemed to do too good on... I opened it up, and did discover that the RAM was in the DDR3 slot, but moving it over didn't help at all.
  16. Well, I ran the PowerMax utility...found nothing. I swapped the IDE cables...no luck I took another drive from an old comp, did a low-level format, installed windoze...put it in this comp, and it won't boot at all. Can't boot from the CD, can't get into the BIOS. What bothers me about that is this HDD seems to run fine (well, except the few screwy things I've mentioned)...so...why would a 200GB run and a 15GB not?
  17. no...only the other machine gets INSTANTLY killed...this one runs, it just runs like crap.
  18. yea...I thought it was the mobo at first myself...but...since the problem seemed to have originated when I plugged in the HDD, either that's the problem or I bumped something while installing it...reason I thought it was the mobo though is 'cause it's a REALLY cheap mobo...QDI KuDoz series... The PSU is pretty good though...well, I think so anyways...came with the case, Antec PSU I believe (Raidmax case)...the case was $70 and it's not really that fancy or anything, so... I'll try the HDD in another comp probably in about an hour...see if that's the problem...I kinda hope so, 'cause that's still under warranty. edit: Ok, that didn't work...windoze got a BSOD, and Mandrake failed to start X...so I'm burning their utility thing now, but from what I've read of other people with this problem, it usually doesn't find anything.
  19. Hmm...I googled around a bit and a few other people seem to have had this problem... It's a Maxtor 200GB ATA133 drive, model 6B200R0. I saw a thing on a site saying to go into CMOS and set it to LBA...so far no problems, but I only did that about an hour ago, so... I'll try to test it in my bro's comp sometime...maybe when he's at work someday...dunno though...I can't seem to find a way to re-create the problem or predict it, so...not sure if that'd work or not. edit: ...and, about 2 minutes after posting that, it crashed again...so...that didn't work Oh, and I just remembered there's another screwy thing I forgot to mention. Whenever I try to open up 'My Computer' in windoze, it locks up, I have to kill that, which then causes explorer to crash, so I've gotta use CTRL-ATL-DEL to get that running again...hmm...I suppose that'd be a real easy way to test it on my bro's comp...now I just have to hope he's working tommrow.
  20. Ok...ever since I got this new Maxtor 200GB HDD, this comp has gone to hell. Both Linux and Windoze don't work right...they keep going all screwy...can't really be more specific than that, 'cause it's a buncha stuff...but...let's see...on linux, I have to open up mcc on every boot and set my mouse to something else then back before it'll work...that's the main annoyance...and on windoze I'll be sitting there...doesn't matter what I'm doing...it just happened while playing a game of SOLITAIRE...but all of a sudden the video card will crash (though it usually can fix itself) or worse, the entire screen will just kinda turn to one color...whatever the main color on the screen was at the time. Also, my HDDs have gone corrupt about 3 times now...and I've reinstalled Mandrake about 5 since the last corruption...the mouse worked the first but then something else screwed up (don't even remember)...and windoze I've reinstalled a few times...reinstalled my video driver a lot...DLed the latest updates (that made it even worse)...so since my HDD is still under warranty...could that be the cause? The thing is, the video card issues sound weird to me for a HDD as the cause, and my other two HDDs got corrupted too as soon as I plugged 'em in to try to transfer to this new drive...so...is there some kinda test I can run on this or something to figure out what my problem is? Or should I just try a different drive and see what happens? The problem is the problems are uncommon enough to make trying a different HDD a pain (only every few hours...can't just plug it in and find out...and some days it seems to work almost fine)

    $0.99 mp3's

There are a LOT of sites that offer this. My personal favorite is www.mp3search.ru, they're REALLY cheap (you can get entire albums for a buck or two), but I think their quality is a bit low... There's also http://www.unlimited-mp3s.in-my-cart.com/ and http://eztracks.aavalue.com/processflow.cfm just to name a few.
  22. Ok...I've got a Line 6 Spider II guitar amp, and I noticed that the pedal plug appeared to be an ethernet plug...so I looked it up online, and it appears that it is. So I want to figure out a way to somehow control it using the computer. Anyone have any ideas as to how I'd do that? I plugged it into my router and it didn't recognize it (not really surprised there), and I tried plugging it into my comp directly but none of the lights on the ethernet card came on...so...anyone have any ideas on something I could try for this? I googled it but it doesn't appear anyone's tried this...or gotten it to work...
  23. what about when your mobo corrupts your hard drive? :-P
  24. ok...now linux won't even boot...says the whole drive is corrupted...one last question...is it possible that my cheap, crappy, $30 QDI mobo is the cause of this? That thing's caused so many problems......and this is not the first time I've had this particular problem on this comp, and I just got it for christmas!
