  1. I'm trying to update GAIM from 68 to 75...but it says:

file /usr/lib/libgaim-remote.so.0.0.0 from install of gaim-0.75-0mdk9.2 conflicts with file from package libgaim-remote0-0.68-1mdk

now, I can't use the find file, because it says some thing is out of date (not sure what exactly...don't know the command for that, and it's not on my menu anymore...) but if anyone has any guesses as to that problem (and how to run it) but I'm thinking if I delete the 'libgaim-remote0-0.68-1mdk' file, then it'll work...but I can't find that...anyone know anything about that problem or my file search thing that'll be of some help?

  2. I think lindows is like a cheap windows clone...it's linux for the wanna-be geek who doesn't know what linux is, but wants it to be more like a geek...but is afraid to get rid of windows...and doesn't know he can have both (a normal geek would just get linux anyways...I fit all of that except I'm an actual geek :-P)

  3. good...I think his drive's messed up again...he said it started working, but then got some errors or something...and when he rebooted, it showed a buncha '99's :-P he said someone in the chat said it was a problem with the disc...but I highly doubt it...I had it displaying all '07's when I messed up my MBR...that's my theory...so I'm gonna go down saturday (he's got a tennis tourny tommrow) and bring a boot disk (incase it's needed) and my CD drive :-P

  4. ahh...he got the CDs working...crap :-P

I found my extra CD drive I was gonna sell him for $10 :-P

may sound mean, but if you know him the way I do, you'd understand...he's freaking rich (only has one desktop in his house...4 year old compaq he's getting linux on...a few other comps though, but they're all laptops!, he's got a huge house...and a tennis court...and stuff) but owes several thousand bucks to friends...he bets on everything, and borrows money daily...so...everything's buisiness with him :-P

  5. aight, my wannabe geek friend just got linux...but the CD drive on his comp was broken, so he had to do a network install from the DL FTP sites...which I've done before too, successfully...but his wasn't...here's what he says is the problem: He hits linux on the boot menu, and it seems to be going ok...goes through all those [OK] things fine...but then it goes into the terminal thing, asking him to log in...not a graphical thing...any ideas? he's using an old compaq presario...5170 I think...

  6. Ok, I'm trying to install 'LimeWireLinux.bin', and I get the following error message when I run it on Konsole:

    kaffe-bin: utf8const.c:394: utf8ConstInit: Assertion `hashTable != ((void *)0)' failed.

    /home/urza9814/Documents/LimeWireLinux.bin: line 1: 4007 Segmentation fault "/usr/lib/kaffe/bin/java" -Djava.compiler=NONE -Xmx100331648 -Xms16777216 com.zerog.lax.LAX "/tmp/install.dir.3902/temp.lax" "/tmp/env.properties.3902"

anyone know what's wrong? looks like I need JAVA compiler, right? but I dunno where to get one :-S

  7. lol...ok, I'll look for RAM...

I'm using different desktops now, right now on window maker (enlightenmint confused the hell outta me :-P) and it seems to be going a lot faster...but yea, I'll get some RAM soon...hope that helps...and until then...I guess I do everything by konsole (can't find anything else on this skin! :-P)

  8. How do you increase the swap? do I have to run the install again (I know I have one...not sure of it's size though) I don't want a new type of linux though if it can be avoided...but I can triple the RAM in this comp for just over $20...pricewatch.com...I need to get some cash from my mom...well, she's remodeling the kitchen...shouldn't be that hard :-P

  9. aight, I have an old, old, old old, and did I mention old? 4 year old compaq presario, and, since I can never get on our new comp because my brothers on it, I installed linux on the compaq...and it's sooo slow...it's frozen twice in the past hour...even windows doesn't do that! anyways, what do I do? I know you can still DL 9.1...but shouldn't I get an older version? that doesn't seem like it'd be much older...and if I get more RAM, will that alone help? I've been thinking about that for a while (only have 64MB in that comp)...please help...I'm 'wishing' for the 'good ol' days' of windows 98!!! :o

  10. IT WORKS! well, except for my wireless internet card...but im just gonna switch it with the card in the other comp...plus, then we'll be able to get online when we move the comp to the basement to record our band :-P

    [edit]

yay! as of 6:30AM, January 15, I now have linux fully up and running!

and, even better, our school has a 2 hour delay! :-P

  11. I can't! I can't use any boot floppys...they don't work at all...so unless there's a way to do that from windows or terminal, I can't...If I get time I'll try the other comp again...but my brother's on that a lot...last time I needed to use it it took me 3 days :-S...mebbe tommrow morning if I don't sleep through my alarm though...

  12. aight, I think I've almost got it here...I took both hard drives from this comp, and put them in the comp it'll install on...I got to the update part and the install failed...so the next time I clicked no for updates...it finished...but I still can't boot linux...though it's showing the boot menu thing...here's what I've done and what errors I've got:

    booted into:

linux: loading bar got to about 9/10 and froze...screen got a little messed up (static line running through it at the loading bar...I took a pic if for some reason you need it...but I doubt that's important)...I then rebooted into:

    Linux-nonfb:

modprobe: insmod usb-ohc [i think...can't quite read it] failed.

    modprobe: insmod ehci-hcd failed.

/dev/hdb6: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY

    (i.e., without -a or -p options)

Failed to check filesystem. Do you want to repair the errors? [i said yes]

    everying seemed ok...

    Linux: boot failed

booted into failsafe, ran that fsck:

several errors saying: illegal block #___ in inode ___. CLEARED

    I then ran fsck again:

illegal block #___ in inode ___. CLEARED

Free blocks count wrong for group #___ (____, counted=____) Fix(y)?

    [i said yes]

linux still wouldn't boot; ran it AGAIN:

    no errors

    and again

    no errors

    linux-nonfb:

/dev/hdb6 had several errors; all said FIXED

    it auto rebooted

    linux: failed to boot

anyways, I can get into terminal with the failsafe...I can log in...so, unless you have a better idea...is there a way to reinstall linux from terminal???

  13. the connection to the server keeps getting reset every timeI try to DL!!! WTF?!?!?!?

    [edit]

it crashed...and Itried again...and it's working...it says an hour left...but I gotta got to sleep...within the next half hour...takes me a loooong time to fall asleep...so yea, I'll try it before school tommrow, hope it works...
