  1. yea, I know floppy and IDE are different...I KNOW what it is, I just don't SAY what it is...lol ehh crap...doesn't look like PCI ones even exist... :( so now I have 3 options I guess... send my mobo back and not have a comp for a few weeks don't use a floppy drive (or use my bro's) set up my old Compaq with a live CD or something and network the floppy drives :-P
  2. no, it doesn't work in windows though, or in the BIOS...it's there, but im not sure if the BIOS autodetects or not...did the first time I believe, but, I dunno, it won't boot from a disk...but I'm thinking one of these, just wanna verify that this is what I need: http://www.aerocooler.com/shop.cart?action...&prod_id=COWI51 http://www.acortech.com/.sc/ms/dd//9/nc/Co...roller%2520Card liking the second one better...does more stuff, same price...don't see what those fans are supposed to do...I see no way for the air to escape the case...but...fans are cool :-P you can already hear my CPU fan downstairs...even with the door closed...lol looks like it comes with some kind of power adapter plug...hmm...wonder what that's for...not knowing what that's for is scaring me...lol edit: just verified that the IDE cable is good...ow...my comp must hate me...the case bit me while I was closing it...and now my hand is bleeding a bit :-P but yea, I plan to get a third harddrive, and that card says it'll do hard drives too, so that'll be good...I'll need it eventually anyways...and the $6 is worth having my comp for the 2 or 3 weeks it would take to send the mobo back and get a new one besides...not like they'd care, but I don't think the warranty covers user errors...
  3. ok, yea, I was gonna check the cable eventually...lol... I know it's not the power...I had the plug in upside down and the light was on solid...lol...and the drive IS detected...well, I dunno...it's in my BIOS, it's in windoze, and it's in linux (kinda...says it's unplugged, so...)...the windoze device manager has it listed though...so...that mean anything? imma swap out the cable with the one from my bro's comp as soon as I can...that might not be for a while though...
  4. I must have missed something....what's the purpose of this thingy? seems kinda pointless to me...
  5. yes, I need a floppy drive...but I'd rather not RMA the mobo...because then I wouldn't have a comp for like, 2 weeks at least...and im not even totally sure this thing has a warranty (though if it does I'm only about 20 days into it)...but...would I be able to use a PCI IDE card?
  6. ...crap...it's brand new too...anything I can do about that?

    Floppy drive

Aight...here's what happened. Last thursday, I was trying to put something on a floppy disk...and it said there was no disk in the drive. I looked at it, and hte light wasn't even turning on. So then I thought the 5 year old drive's probably fried (long story short: I had to move it to the other bay, and I was doing so while my comp was on...there was a spark, my comp shut down, and I thought that mighta damaged the drive)...so anyways, I bought a new one, since they're only about $10...got it today, put it in, and...nothing. My BIOS doesn't recognize a disk in (though it is set up right), the light doesn't turn on, windoze says there's no disk in the drive and Mandrake says the drive is not connected. So...any ideas? I was gonna try a different IDE cable, but the only other I have is from my old compaq, and it's shaped differently.
  8. ok...well...I have a wireless optical one that didn't, so, just making sure.
  9. Ok, well, after registering my soundcard, I get a discount on a buncha crap from Creative Labs...I wouldn't use this, but there are a few things that are pretty cheap...my choices are an optical mouse, really good headphones (they're outta stock though :( ), a webcam (already got 3) or an MP3 Player (already got a few of those too...the good kind...CD/MP3)...so I'm thinking, the mouse is only $10, why not...since I been using the same old (nice, really reliable, but kinda ugly and beat up) ball mouse for 5 years...so anyways, will this thing work on Linux? http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?product=262 not sure if imma get it yet, but a new mouse for my new comp would be nice...though I don't really wanna spend any money (even though I have...a lot...)

    mobos...

I ended up with a QDI KuDoz...seems good...I got no complaints...yet anyways :-P It's nice...and it's cheap, and in my experience, cheap stuff lasts as long as or longer than expensive stuff, so... :-P Like Dell...everyone says their tech support is the best...every time I've called them they've said it's a virus. EVERY time...lol
  11. this is off...I ran gkrellm and the sensors command in CLI...BIOS says my CPU temp is 51C, this says -68C. BIOS says my fan...it switches between 3850 and 3776, this is reading 3729. And, this says my system temp is...79 I think...or -55, one of the two...BIOS says it's 31. Yea, while in BIOS it's not under any real use, but still...-68 is a bit far away from 51.
  12. I'm just curious, are there any programs that will read my CPU temp? My mobo didn't come with a prog to do it, so I can only read it from my BIOS...and that's kinda pointless. I'm just kinda curious as to what it would be when I'm actually doing something :P
  13. if I boost the power supply I get that squeal.
  14. yay! I hate passport >:o it's evil oh right...it's made by M$...that'd be why...
  15. yea, I've noticed that about linux...I get no beeps and dings from Gaim when im using XMMS...that's really annoying...lol
  16. meh...I got them both running...but...I wanted one prog that could do it...oh well...
  17. Hey, I'm just wondering if there is any program out there (I would actually prefer winblows, since im not sure all the hardware will work in linux, and I have yet to get my soundcard set up, though it shouldn't be all that hard) that could record from multiple inputs. Like, right now, I have a line-in on my soundcard, and a line in on my mobo. Ideally, I would like to also be able to use the line-in of 2 other soundcards, and record them all to separate tracks with a program like Acid Pro or Soundforge. Anyone know of anything that could do this?
  18. I got it! I was looking for my post on the winblows message boards...and those things are soo screwed up...whenever you post stuff it just kinda disappears and comes back 3 days later...but anyways, as I was looking for it, I found a similar post, and they said to remove my slave drive...and it worked.
  19. ok, this is really screwed up. when I try to reinstall, it says "STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll" ...and M$.com says to fix that, you have to reinstal. ...errrr..... imma try to grab the file from my bro's comp....hopefully that'll work. edit: ahh, no wonder I couldn't save any config files...my /home was stuffed...lol...0B free :-P I emptied my trash, should be ok now...still gonna reformat though...make it bigger. edit2: aurgh...got the dll from my bro's comp and from dll-files or w/e that site is called...im thinking they mean the DLL on the CD though...meaning my install disk is ****ed, meaning imma have to pirate a new one...lol
  20. I think I need to reformat my linux /home partition too...having even more problems now...KDE apps just randomly crash and pop up error messages, Gnome don't work at all, I can't save my firefox prefs.....this /home is the one I had when I originially installed mandrake about a year ago...it's been through a lot...I've screwed up this install so many times, but it's always survived. It went from 9.2 to 10.0CE and back to 9.2 (which is what screwed it up the most)...so I think it's time to reformat....
  21. im using it right now under Morphix...I tried plugging in the other CD drive, and it died...not enough power...but if I step it up, I get that squeal...but since you said before it could be too much power, I'll try pluggin the rest in and see what happens...I looked at the BIOS and everything seemed ok..... edit: tried it, still got the squeal then I tried plugging everything in (just power) and booting with the low setting...it worked, oddly but then I moved the CD-ROM to the right IDE plug, and it didn't boot (it's currently on the hdd plug)...imma have to try the hdds though...but for now, our pilot light is out, and my mom has to use my comp to look up how to fix it (she's too afraid to go in the basement and use that comp...so...) edit2: IT LIVES!!! turns out my main CD-ROM drive is fried or something...meh, oh well, I'll just buy a new one...I planned to anyways, I salvaged this off my old comp, and it's only 4x... edit3: grrr...windoze don't boot...meaning my mom's gonna kill me...lol I get a BSOD when I try to boot...even safe mode...with technical info of: '*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF8940640, 0xC00000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)'...imma have to look that up on M$...hopefully get it fixed before the BGII LAN party my bro and his friends are having... ...anyone understand what this means, and will a reinstall fix it? http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...md_stp_xlxv.asp
  22. crap...this isn't good...I just built my new comp...got it all put together...I think it's ok...but when I tried to boot it up...it didn't work. So then I realized I didn't plug in the power button. So I plugged that in, booted, it started for a sec then shut down. Realized I needed to boost my PSU voltage. So I did that, booted, and now im getting this loud squeal from somewhere around my CPU it seems...not the fan, I know that much, 'cause I plugged it into my other comp and didn't get it. Anyone got any ideas? Oh, and the case speaker isn't plugged in... oh, all I got connected right now is: soundcard, PSU, Mobo, CPU, CPU fan, RAM, other fans...that's it edit: ok, the squeal is coming from my mobo. Question is, why?
  23. found this on google news: http://www.fool.com/News/mft/2004/mft04122320.htm what are your thoughts on that?
