  1. I'm runnning ML 9.2 absolutely stable now with the 2.6.3-1MDK kernel, it has very good support for nForce-based MoBo.

You should go for the forcedeth-driver for your onboard NIC and don't even bother trying to find appropiate drivers for onboard sound, just go for ALSA.

I've downloaded my iso's tonight and I can't wait to get home to do a clean install without hesitation.

In my opinion there no argument in waiting for nVidia!

  2. Ok, thxs....

Now that I've got my system working with the 2.6.3 mandrakekernel it might be a new challenge to compile a vanilla-kernel for my system. I've heard that when you compile your own kernel you gain a lot in terms of speed etc.

    :jester:

If you have some usefull links, I'd apreciate it.

  3. Hello,

Sounds like a problem that has been discussed here before. Anyway here's what to do:

open a terminal and type, just to identify your kernel:

    uname -r

    this will give something like:

    2.4.22-....mdk

Go to the mirror where you downloaded your iso's and download the matching kernel-source, be sure to find a matching one, else it won't work!

Go to the dir where you saved the kernel-source, become su and type:

    urpmi kernel-source2.4.22-...mdk

after this you have to download the nVidia source driver at this link:

    click me, click me

still in the terminal (as su) type:

    rpm --rebuild NVIDIA_nforce1.0-0261.src.rpm

a lot of info will pass your screen, just look for a line like:

    wrote /usr/.....

go to this dir where you will find your new compiled nForce-driver

    type:

    rpm -ivh NVIDIA_nforce......rpm

When finished go into Mandrake Control Center and bring up you network!

    Good luck.

  4. Here 's how I managed:

    1. I added this ftp-link to Software Media Manager:

    Linux ftp

    2. In a root-terminal I did "urpmi.update -a" and after that "urpmi kernel-2.6.3.1mdk"

    3. after installation I edited my lilo.conf and did "lilo -v" (so now I can boot into both kernels).

:wall: The first prob I ran into was getting my onboard NIC to work, via this link I managed:

    nV News Forums

:wall: My next prob was that my system would freeze on several occasions, but after installing udev, this seems to be overcome.

The only prob left is, everytime I boot it says something like: "loading eth 0, nvnet not found", so the first thing I have to do, after (re)boot is reinstall the forcedeth-driver and bring up network again.

/edit/ I edited my modprobe.conf file with "alias eth0 forcedeth", now it loads at boot (haven't checked if, when booting into kernel 2.4.22, nvnet will work, it's been enough for today). UPDATE No luck, but I guess I won't be needing kernel 2.4.22 anyway. :jester:

Everything else works fine untill now and pretty darn stable, only thing left is to get my sensors to work, but I already read something in this thread, so I think I will overcome that prob also!

/edit/ Haven't done anything with it, but I won't hold back this information I found:

    Linux on the Abit NF7-S

    Hardware Monitoring with LM-Sensors

/edit/ Got it working! With help from this page:

    Migrating to Linux Kernel 2.6

Found this url in this thread!

  5. I want to upgrade MD 9.2 to kernel 2.6.2-3, but I have a nForce Motherboard so I need the appropiate kernel-source

I have found the following kernel:

    kernel-2.6.3.1mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

but for this one I can't find the source :wall:

also I found the following source:

    kernel-source-2.6.2-3mdk.i586.rpm

but for this one I can't find the kernel :wall:

Has anyone already found a matching pair?

    Thxs in advance.

  6. Sorry, have been busy installing MD 9.1 on another PC (not filled in at my sig yet), so I'm a little late with my reply.

Did you succeed or do you still need help.

If so, here are the steps I followed:

first find out your kernel version, open a terminal and type: uname -r

This will give something like 2.4.22-....mdk, (sorry, I'm runnng MD 9.1 on my new machine)

Go to the mirror where you downloaded MD 9.2 and look for the right kernel-source, download this (doesn't matter where), if you are still in the terminal become su. Go to the dir where you saved the kernel-source and type: urpmi kernel-source 2.4.22-.....mdk.

After this is finished download the NVIDIA_nforce....src.rpm

Still in the terminal as su type: rpm --rebuild NVIDIA_nforce.....src.rpm

A lot of info will pass your screen, when it is finished, look for a line like "wrote /urs/......

Go to that dir and there you will find the rebuild NVIDIA_nforce...rpm

    Type rpm -ivh NVIDIA_nforce........rpm

After this go to the mandrake configuration and configure your network!

If it doesn't work I will help you on my other machine running MD 9.2 (so I can be more specific)

    Good luck :P

  7. Had no problems at all. Yesterday I installed MD 9.2, under WinXP I downloaded the source-kernel from the mirror and the source rpm drivers from the nVidia page.

Did urpmi source-kernel, rebuilded the source rpm drivers and installed them.

After setting up Network I was online again. All this after 1,5 hour.:thumbs:
