  1. f you had 2.6.6 working on your computer, there should still be a lilo entry for it. It might be towards the bottom, but it should still be there.

I'm afraid not, I did a fresh reinstall without saving anything. Actually I'm working with XP :furious3: because there are still two applications I've got to get working in ML.

    1. A good p2p-client (this one should not be so hard)

    2. I have a (windows) program to do my banking, I'm trying to get this working in vmware, but I still have not figured out how to get my modem running to send the transactions.

Once I have found a solution for these 2, I'm going to do a last fresh install to switch completely to ML.

Untill that time I'm messing around, and trying... Therefore I regulary mess everything leaving me nothing but a complete new fresh install.

The good news is, I got kernel-2.6.7.0.rc2.1mdk to work yesterday, so untill now I'm a happy camper B)

  2. I have a nForce MoBo, the magnificent Abit NF7-SL (with integrated Sound and Lan).

I have ran ML from 9.0 - 10.1 cooker with it, as of ML 10.0 Community everything workes out of the box (only the APIC-thing).

If you prefer ML 9.0 - 9.2, check this board for some guidelines on how to get the onboard NIC to work.

I would go for the nForce-chipset!

  3. I'm still kind of a newbie, I'm experimenting with ML, to replace XP on my major Box.

I had to do a reinstall because of this experimenting.

My problem is that my previous install was running on kernel-2.6.6-3mdk and I can't find this kernel with kernel-source.

Kernel 2.6.6 was working perfectly on my (nForce) box (the APIC-thing was solved and so on).

I'v tried the latest 2.6.7 RC but it isn't working (can't even boot into it, still working on it).

If anyone of you got a mirror for kernel-2.6.6-3mdk I would be much obliged.

    Thx

BTW I have tried to compile a kernel 2.6.6 from kernel.org but untill now it was'nt a succes. I need the precompiled one to get my box switching between ML and XP, without going into the bios to disable/enable APIC everytime.

  4. You don't really have to format or partition anything to try Knoppix since it runs from the CD

Before I installed mandrake or got into Linux at all, I tried Knoppix in my winXP box, and here I am.

Knoppix also was my first experience with Linux, but since my onboard features were not recognized, I searched and found Overclockix.

I like the distro, so I installed it to my HD to experiment with it. I found an interesting thing about upgrading to another kernel on their forum:

    click me!!!!!

I want to try it and see if I can do that to Mandy as well. If it works on Mandy I'll post my experience.

    /edit: typos/

  5. @Steve:

Thx, for pointing me to the faq's, I'm sorry I did'nt take the trouble to look at it before coming up with my question.

The faq indeed gives me all the answers

    @Gowator:

At the moment I can't do without XP, still looking for a good p2p client for Linux (so all my mp3 and other data is on a FAT32 partition) and trying to get my modem to work in Linux for telebanking (maybe with VMWare for Linux).

But when I finally get rid of XP, I will keep your advice in mind about setting up a partition accessible from different distro's.

  6. Hi everyone,

At the moment I'm dual-booting ML (It is a fresh install) and XP. I want to install 1 or 2 more distro's (like maybe Knoppix, Overclockix or Mepis).

How can I install multiple distro's, I know I can create 1 partition as swap, but when I create 1 partition as /boot and 1 partition as /home, can I use them for all the distro's I plan to install?

I have installed Overclockix (besides ML and XP) but I can't figure out how to configure my lilo.conf to get them running from Lilo (XP is on hda1-hda9, swap is on hda10, ML is on hda11 and Overclockix is on hda12, both ML and Overclockix with there own /boot and /home).

    Thx.

  7. Also, after changing those BIOS values, the NoApic setting caused Windows to not boot successfully. It hung right after the bootloader selection. What does the Apic function do?

Good question! Everytime I change between XP and ML I go into the bios, to change the Apic option, if I leave Apic disabled XP won't boot.

Also on my previous install I had kernel-2.6.6-3mdk installed, but I can't find it back on the sources (kernel 2.6.6 actually solve the problem with the randomly lockups, with Apic enabled in my bios).

I tried kernel-2.6.7-rc1, but for some funny reason it just won't boot, so if someone can give me a link to kernel-2.6.6-3 (incl. kernel-source), I would be very thankfull.

  8. Well, again, as far as I know there is no point in installing the official nForce-drivers because they don't support the 2.6 kernel.

As for the randomly lockups, I had the same probs, I followed this thread to solve this problem.

Also I read that you have to make sure that you have the latest bios-version.

    Good Luck.

  9. OK, I think I'm did not have the right name!

How can I explain? At first ML 10.0 should be released with Xfree86 4.4.0. After some issues with licence ML decided to go back to Xfree86 4.3.0, but I have heard of an alternative X-server and I thougt it is X11.

Correct me if I'm wrong and post the right name of the alternative x-server.

  10. Is there someone out there who is using X11 instead of Xfree86?

How can I switch to X11 (I already found an RPM on the ftp-source, so I will be able to install it), do I have to uninstall Xfree86, do I start X11 the same way as I start Xfree86.

Last (but not least) is there a good reason to switch to X11 (besides the license-issue)?

  11. Yesterday I reinstalled ML 10 CE with the option APIC Disabled in my Bios (I have the latest Bios) and inmediately installed kernel 2.6.6-3mdk from Cooker, then I upgraded to OE from the 10.0 OE sources.

After rebooting I enabled APIC and booted into the new kernel and had it up and running till this morning

Finally my box is doing what I want it to (both in ML and in XP). B)

Only thing is I can't find the kernel-source for kernel 2.6.6-3mdk. :wall:

Has anyone found it already, I have to have it to install the drivers for my ATI card :help:
