  1. Another really cool app is called Lopster. 8)
  2. Hey all, time again to ask you all for advice! No matter what I try to do, I cannot get my floppy to work right. I have tried the following, not in any order: 1. Disabling supermount 2. Disabling the icon in 'configure desktop' 'behavior' then creating a new icon. 3. Changing the 'dev' name in the icon properties 4. Enabling 'user' in options 5. Enabling supermount. And probably more, I'm dizzy from messing with it. Now, with my 'self-created' icon, which labels it as /dev/fd0, and mounted at /mnt/floppy, when I boot up, the error message comes up saying that "/dev/fd0 is not a valid block device. Any ideas are greatly appreciated, as usual. Thanks.
  3. Yeah james, that is how I did it -- in failsafe mode. I guess that somewhat explains it, huh? Now I know to disable autologin in lilo before I reboot to a console to install drivers. And I'm glad you were there, many thanks.
  4. james!!! Thanks, that did it! What a hassle! Can you explain why the modules.conf would not have been properly setup with the new driver? I just don't get it, it has never been a problem with the older Nvidia installers? And why just me? (sniffle...) I'm not a bad person... :) Thanks again for everyone's input.
  5. OK, this is getting weird! Now, I installed 4496, and the ONLY way I can get into X is by booting in 'failsafe' mode, then choosing 'text mode & network', then logging in as a normal user (me), then doing 'startx'. I re-ran lilo, still, it will not auto-login to kde on boot. (Using kde 3.1.3) Any ideas at this point?? Thanks guys, for all your input. :)
  6. Actually, I have had no real problems (before) with the installer either. bvc, sorry, I guess I misled you... the command you gave me, I did that with 4363 installed, not with the other, which would explain the simlink. And yes I used: nvidia-installer --uninstall to remove 4363. Then I did sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run to install. My config-4 file is good, OK. I'll keep fooling with it, not cuz I really need it, but just out of sheer bull-headedness! Thanks again.
  7. Thanks. First I uninstalled the 4363. Then installed 4496. The output of your command: mike@localhost mike]$ file /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so: symbolic link to libglx.so.1.0.4363 [mike@localhost mike]$ The installer always says, it needs to compile a kernel during the install, I say OK. Then it installs, seemingly OK, but I cannot get into X. It says no usable screens, couldn't load Nvidia kernel. I have tried this numerous times with the same result. And always, reinstalling 4363 works. So I can't figure out what I might be doing wrong. Obviously I CAN do it properly, since 4363 always works. Maybe it's the 2.4.21-0.25mdk kernel? I don't know.

  9. No good. Got an error about tainting the kernel, then it continued, when it was done I still couldn't get into x., I don't know jack about this, so unless somebody's got a foolproof (read: MEproof) way, I'm just gonna stay with 4363. Thanks again!
  10. I dunno, it's the exact same error you'd get if you installed the Nvidia driver and didn't change the xf86 config-4 file. So I'm still using 4363 which works OK, but I would like to use the latest if possible. Thanks...
  11. no error message, during the driver install. "no usable screens" when trying to startx. Geforce 4 Ti4400. Thanks.
  12. Mandrake 9.1 with kernel 2.4.21-0.25mdk, was happily using Nvidia driver version 4363, tried to install latest driver 4496, couldn't get into X, had to go back to 4363. Anyone else have this? Thanks.
  13. OK, well I hope it will work.
  14. I think I know what you mean... wineinstall will make a fake "c" drive in your /home directory, and that's where it will install a sorta "fake windows".
  15. Where do you see that? Cuz I don't have a windows partition...
  16. In the config file, I had to change only a few things, here is mine for you to look at and try. You can re-mount your windows anytime when wine is done installing. The main things I changed were the paths for the cdrom and floppy, and also "DesktopDoubleBuffered" from "N" to "Y" (its about half way down the page here). That should get you going, I think. 17. OK Mandrake control center / Mount points/ disk drake. Just click on your windows partition, then click unmount Then I suggest trying the cvs wine, doing ./tools/wineinstall
  18. If you used an rpm, you can remove it with package manager or Mandrake Control center / remove software
  19. right. just go into the /home/wine directory. su to root, do make uninstall that's it.
  20. Hey Grimey, I had an idea: First, uninstall wine, then unmount your windows partition, then re-install wine. When you get to the part where it asks if you want a no-windows install, say yes. Try that, I bet it'll work.
  21. Are you running XP on the same hard drive as Linux? And are you able to see your XP files and folders while running Linux? These errors I have never seen. I honestly don't know what to tell you, maybe someone else here can walk you through this.
  22. You do like this: wine notepad (or whatever the executable is.) In fact, notepad is a good test to see if wine actually works. Try it.
  23. OK, why don't you try to just install wine from the Mandrake CDs. You can do it from control center, and it should be very easy to do. If you can get that far, let me know. By the way, what games are you trying to run with wine?
