  1. Man, all that after a full day at work???

    THANKS so much.

I added myself to audio, floppy and cd, while I was there, am gonna test it now!

Then I'll move on to nvidia and then trying to get my Lite-On cd burner working (it;s not in the list of supported hardware, but it works fine in Mandrake)

    I'll be back...

    thanks again.

Oh crap, now the sound still dont work: error

    mike@debian:~$ cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp

    bash: /dev/dsp: No such device

  3. OK thanks, weird seems to be my hallmark!

I would like to make it so I need to startx each time, (I just gotta figure out how)

and upgrading to Sid, same thing.

This is a LOT like my first few days on Mandrake, the learning curve is even steeper, but equally rewarding, thanks to all you kind folks.

I have somehow gotten some icons on the desktop that I can't seem to get rid of, also...

but windowmaker seems cool to me.

    And why synaptic won't work?

    Yes... weird luck!

  4. Sorry DOlson, we're on different pages here I think, I was just saying how I did apt to remove kde, but I guess it really didn't- cuz I can still use konqueror,

but at least I am able to get into X with windowmaker, cool.

Now I got a problem with synaptic, it no longer runs, I get this error:

    mike@debian:~$ su

    Password:

    debian:/home/mike# synaptic

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server

Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server

    synaptic:could not open display

    debian:/home/mike#

    huh? it worked once!

And how can I see what kernel I have, so I can get the correct kernel-source?

    Thanks a lot.

  5. OK, I got to a prompt and did 'apt-get remove kde', then I had to rename a file in /usr/bin called x-session-manager so it wouldn't load I guess... anyway I am back up and using Mozilla in Windowmaker.

But shouldn't kde work with this dist?

    I would think so...

    Thanks.

By the way, my ms wheel mouse works now, during the install I found a module, thanks to that tutorial above..

  6. OK, that tutorial link really helped, I reinstalled Debian from scratch, and got into x by using the 'vesa' option, after taking the author's advice and getting windowmaker, and 'synaptic' which is really cool, downloaded Mozilla with it!

Now, for the bummer, I did 'apt-get install kde'

and now I can't log in to x anymore, the kde splash screen comes up and loads about half-way, then the screen pops off, and the Debian log-in comes back up. I can't figure how to get to a command prompt here, it won't let me...

So guys, what's up here? If I can get to a prompt I guess I could do 'apt-get remove kde', right?

Or will that let me use windowmaker again?

    Thanks again,

  7. I did the bf24 thing as well, and now I am double-sure I have the kernel-source installed (I tried to apt-get it again), and I installed kernel-headers just in case, nvidia (latest) still complains about no kernel-source.

I will also try deleting all the XFConfigs, then using the one I make...

I can't help but wonder if I shouldn't have just hit 'enter' to go with a 'safe' install?, instead of bf24?

Tonight, I will mess with this, and look at all the posted suggestions here again to see if I can't get nvidia installed.

I remember well- my first linux was mandrake 8.1, and I had a hard time getting Nvidia installed on that, too, but thanks to all you guys, It happened, and I've been hooked on linux ever since!

    Good Morning.

  8. hmmm, OK, that explains why all the xf86config editing and saving got me nowhere, cuz I was saving it to the xf86config-4 file!

Well, maybe tomorrow I'll give it another go...

by the way, if you have a link to look at regarding the mouse thing, I'd appreciate that as well.

Also, I found one good thing: nano is a command line editor I can ACTUALLY use!!!

    Thanks DOlson.

  9. Thanks, I finally got Debian installed,!

But it did not get my USB wheel mouse, (I borrowed a ps2 to make it work) and I had no sound, and finally got to X by using the vesa thing, but then only Gnome, when I tried kde the screen flickered a few times and wouldn't load.

Man, I gotta tell ya, it really makes me appreciate Mandrake!

I'll bet, that if I was to re-install Debian again, I couldn't do it! Frankly I don't know how I did it this time.

Then, I figured I would try to do the nvidia thing and hosed it, I tried to edit the config-4 file first and then install the driver, and I know I have the kernel source installed, but the nvidia installer said I didn't, and the install failed, re-ran xf86config like before, but still no X.

One of these days I'm gonna have to learn some command-line, or else just stick with Mandrake, I guess.

At least for me, Debian is, I am pretty sure, over my head.

After I sleep on it I may feel like tackling it some more...

    Thanks again.

  10. OK I love Mandrake, but I wanted to see about Debian on a second machine...

it really makes me appreciate the Mandrake installer!

Problem is getting into X -- I can't. Using an Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4400, selected 'nv' in the installation, when trying to go into X, the screen flickers a few times then says nope.

I realize I am totally over my head here, but if anyone can help out, I would surely appreciate it.

    Thanks.

  11. chris z, thanks, and here is fstab:

    /dev/hda1 / ext2 defaults 1 1

    none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

    /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

    /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom auto user,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

    /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0

    /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto user,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    none /proc proc defaults 0 0

    /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

I changed this in mcc, under 'mount points'.

Now, I have deleted my self-made floppy icon, and gone back to the 'default' floppy icon,

the floppy does work now, but still, during boot-up, I get the error saying /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device.

(I don't think I changed that... but I could have...)

I'll try changing it to /dev/floppy like you said there.

Nope, changing it to /dev/floppy results in the same error 'not a valid block device'.

    hmmm...

    THANKS again.
