I added agpgart to my etc/modprobe.preload file and now everything starts normally. Thanks for all the help.

It's now working. I logged in as root. Typed modprobe agpgart. Logged out as root and back in as user ron. Typed startx and it starts normally. My only other question would be, is there a file I can edit so I get logged in without having to do this every time I start the computer?

I saw a post from someone on the pclinuxonline.com message boards saying that they were having problems with startx and that they fixed it by doing insmod agpgart. Sounds like that might be my problem. I was wondering if anyone here could give me instructions on how to try it.

I ran fdisk and deleted both my Linux and XP partition. I then tried installing just 10.0 RC1 and still got the original errors. At this point I think I'm going to give up for now. I'll try again when the final version of 10.0 gets released and maybe I won't have the same problems.

The errors I am getting are if I try and run Partition Magic when logged into XP.

 

The first error message is: Powerquest Partition Magic has detected error 116 on the partition starting at sector 41174784 on Disk 1. The starting LBA value is 41174784 and the CHS value is 16435502. The LBA and CHS values must be equal. Partition Magic has verified that the LBA values is correct and can fix the CHS value.

 

The second error message is: Init failed: Error 117

Partition's drive letter cannot be identified.

 

Do either of these errors explain what is going on with 10.0 RC1?

I tried running xf86config as root. I also tried running XFdrake from the command line, not changing anything, hitting test, and then typing startx. Neither worked. Same error messages. I am dual booting with XP. I went into Partition Magic on the XP side and it is now telling me that are problems with the hard drive. It offered to fix the problem, but now I can't seem to run Partition Magic either. Maybe the 10.0 discs messed something up? I ordered them from almostfreelinux.com since I'm on dial up. Any ideas on what to do next?

I just tried installing 10.0 RC1 and have the same problem. Curious if anyone has any ideas? This happens with both the 2.6 and 2.4 kernels.

Hi,

I've tried installing 10.0 Beta 2 a few times and end up with the same error each time. KDE does not launch. I have a console appear asking me for my username and password. After typing those in I typed startx and get the following information and errors:

I had previously gone into the KDE Control Center and unchecked the box for enable display power management. I went back and checked the box. I then changed all of the options to disabled and that fixed the problem. Thanks for all the help and I'll post back if the problem reoccurs.

I saved the lilo.conf file after I edited it. I then opened a termial entered su and put in my root password. I then entered lilo -v. I did this everytime I edited the file. What I posted earlier is what the file is right now. Thanks for the suggestion. Any other ideas?

I went into the KDE control center and disabled the screen saver. I also went into power control and turned off enable display power management. Here are the options I have (and their current settings) under Power in my Bios. Enable ACPI is set to yes. Auto Suspend Timeout is off. Resume on modem ring is off. Remote power on LAN is disabled. Power button function is set to sleep/wake. I have tried turning ACPI off. When I did this I also changed my lilo.conf file accordingly. When this did not work I went back into the Bios and turned ACPI back on. I then adjusted the lilo.conf file again. Neither of these worked. I also changed the Power button function in the Bios to on/off, but that had no effect either.

 

I am going out of town with my job for several days. So it will be Wednesday or Thursday before I can try anything else. I will still be able to check and see if anyone has any other suggestions. Thanks in advance. I'm also going to post my lilo.conf file to see if that helps.

Hi,

 

I had this same exact problem with 9.1. If I leave my computer for even a minute without doing anything the monitor goes black. There is nothing I can do to get it back. I end up having to turn the power strip off the computer is plugged into and then doing a reboot. In 9.1 this problem was fixed by installing the ACPI and ACPID packages and setting them to run when everything booted up. I also had to edit my lilo.conf file so that ACPI was turned on. I tried doing this in 9.2 and it does not work. I tried updating the kernel and that did not help either. Neither did installing all of the updates for 9.2.

Just noticed that even though the icons are gone, if I click on the filename for Mozilla Firebird it opens the program up. Also, William said I could add an icon on my desktop using the application launcher. This is probably a stupid question, but what exactly is it and where do I find it. Would you right click on the desktop and then select link to application?

Ok. I screwed something up and I'm not sure what. I was trying to copy the Mozilla Firebird icon to my desktop and then link it to the shell script file I was using to run the program. Now, if you go into the Mozilla Firebird folder, several of the icons have disappeared. The file names are there, but the icons are not. If you double click on any of them you get an error message saying you could not run the program. Any ideas?

I have now copied the Mozilla Firebird folder into usr/lib. There is no Mozilla Firebird icon I can click on. There is, however, a Mozilla Firebird shell script (named Mozilla Firebird) that if I double click on opens Mozilla Firebird. My question now is, can I change the icon to the Mozilla Firebird icon, how do I put a link to this on my desktop, and lastly is there a way to add this to my programs list.

I downloaded Mozilla Firebird 0.6.1 last night and am trying to install it. Keep in mind that this is my first time trying to install a non RPM package. I was able to unzip the source (if that's the right term). I now have a Mozilla Firebird folder under Username/Documents. I changed to the Mozilla Firebird directory and then typed ./configure and got a no such file or directory error. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the help bvc and Chris. After running lilo -v everything seems to be fixed. I've left the computer on for the last half hour and now I'm getting a screensaver instead of the monitor going black. I let it do this four different times so the problem should be fixed. Once again, thanks for the help and I'll post if I have any other problems.

I had to leave the computer for a while so I turned the monitor off. When I got back I turned the monitor back on and the screen was black and it would not respond. I unplugged the computer and then rebooted. Thought this bit of info might help.

Neither ACPI or ACPID were installed. I went into Software Management and installed them. Before I did that I edited /etc/lilo.conf file. I am copying the file into this post.

The monitor is still turning off. I am using KDE. I have no problem adding the xset command in, but am not sure where to put it.

Thank you very much for the reply. Until I found this forum earlier this afternoon, I posted this on a couple of different sites with no responses whatsoever. I'm going to boot back into Linux and give this a shot. I'll post back if I have any other problems or can't figure out how to get into something. Thanks again as this has been driving me crazy and I've been starting to think I should just give up.

I installed 9.1 a few days ago and the installation went fine. I can log on to Linux fine. The problem seems to happen if I leave the computer running without actually doing anything. I can go away for a few minutes and the screen goes black. There is nothing I can do to get it to come back except to turn off the power strip the computer is plugged into and then rebooting the computer. I tried going into Drakboot and unchecking enable ACPI. I also checked force no apic. However, if I go back into Drakboot everything I did went back to it’s original state. The monitor I have is generic. The video card is an Intel ® 82810 Graphics Controller. Mandrake did not detect my monitor or video card on the install. I’ve got the monitor set up as a generic 800 x 600 and the video card set up as an Intel 810. I’ve tried selecting all of the different video cards listed under Intel but that doesn’t seem to make a difference. I'm dual booting with Windows XP and the problem doesn't happen with XP. I also had Red Hat 9.0 installed until I decided I wanted to try Mandrake. The problem only seems to happen with Mandrake. I'm not real sure what to do about this one. I'm pretty new to Linux. Any ideas?
