  1. Since the windows fonts are in winnt, you need to use Mandrake Control Centre to enable you to Mount the Windows partition first so Mandrake can look into the windows partition.

Having done that, then you can copy the Fonts by using the Fonts Manager in MCC (now I am doing it!!!!).

NOTE********** When you have finished copying the Fonts, for safetys sake you should UnMount the Windows partition otherwise you could accidently delete it or if you do something that screws up your up your Linux OS you could screw up your Windows one as well.

  2. Hello everyone. I am running Mandrake9.2 with the .....4.21 +4Gb kernel and all the appropriate, for my purposes, Errata updates and upgrades. I have downloaded the latest 2.6 kernel and the 2.6 Source. (From Mandrakes Packager) The Source installed AOK.

The Kernel install said that Module-init-tools0.9.15 was needed so I got same from a site which had it in tar form and did the usual ,/configure OK but the <make> gives an error lines as follows:-

    gcc-g 02 -Wunused -Wall -Wcast-align -o insmod.static -static insmod.o

    /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lc

collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

    make: *** [insmod.static] Error 1

I know many of you are using the new kernel so you have obviously overcome any problems that arose (maybe this one). Is there an RPM available from anywhere for this (I don't expect that to solve the problem because the dependency still obviously exists)

Thanks in advance. John (69yrs young) :help:

  3. HI ANON.

Thanks for Pic, I can see you certainly do have a Preference in your Kongi.

Both my 9.2 and my 9.1 OSs are fresh installs. Because I have no programming skills I do not try to make changes to things like Kongi. There must be some good reason why our Kongi's are different. I wonder if you went the upgrade path from 9.0 onwards or something like that ??

If I get this next bit right you might see my Konji Pic.

Hope it works but if it doesn't then don't worry . Cheers and Thanks .

  5. Thank you heaps everyone. I tried everything you all so generously suggested but none of it worked. I decided to take a punt and dig around the CDRTOOLS site and took a further punt of downloading the latest alpha tar version :- cdrtools-2.01a24.tar.gz

Installed it by using :- make INS_BASE=usr/local install ( does not require ./configure)

It installed perfectly after a very lengthy run. Now I have XCDROAST up and running.

So it seems there is a problem with Mandrake 9.2 with Cdrtools 2.00.3 "stable version" ???? .

So problem is now solved, :D

    Cheers

  6. Thanks ANON for your tip, however I am running 9.2 and I also checked into my 9.1 and in neither Kongi is there an "appearances" in the configure Konqueror. So I don't know if that was maybe the case in 9.0. Just the same, again THANKS.

Hello BVC . You were right on, it was beast_wars, and the rest of the Decoratives ??? all appeared to be pretty ugly as well. I had seen your most recent post so I tried to delete it by using drakefont but it just would not delete it (beast wars) or the entire decoratives so I went directly to the folder and deleted it and rebooted. When it came back to root I found that the font had changed to A.D._Mono and it too looked pretty uninspiring so again I deleted its folder called western and again rebooted. This time the new font appeared reasonable. I was much happier but I decided to continue to hunt for a way to select what I wanted.

I spent a whole afternoon and night searching without success and decided to update to the new kernel, the +4Gb (memory) and this went perfectly.

So I started to checkout what changes may have occurred to settings and such so naturally I clicked on "configure your desktop" got to <accessability>, no changes there.

Clicked on <components> -> components chooser, no changers there then -> file associations, no changes there either then -> FILE MANAGER then I noticed that there was NO Font listed in the box although a size of 12 was shown . So I thought what the hell, I'll select Century Schoolbook (which I happen to like) and reboot and see what happens. I re-enter root and click on Home and what do I find ??? the font is now Century Schoolbook and to double check I changed the File Manager font size to 16 ( I have a 21inch monitor) and again rebooted. When back again the Kongi font size was as I had selected.

    To sum up:-

All the Configure in Kongi does is set things up for Kongi as a web browser .

File Manager has to be used to set the fonts for Kongi as a FILE browser/manager. I think it is safe to say I/we were all looking in the wrong place because nowhere is there any guidance to this aspect.

It is a shame that one cannot also select Bold especially when using a large screen as I do.

So problem is now solved. Thanks BVC for nursing me through this one. It encouraged me to get a solution instead of just putting up with the ugliness.

  7. Thanks again BVC for still trying to help. Yes I have tried all the usual methods of changing fonts but this one won't go away. I never selected it in the first place so I don't know what type it is. It is almost as if it was self installed to deter one from working in root because nothing seems to change it.

    Cheers.

  8. I did run the test as root and the result was just the following:-

    [john@localhost john]$ su

    [root@localhost john]# find / -name stdio.h

    /usr/include/bits/stdio.h

    /usr/include/stdio.h

    [root@localhost john]#

I hope this gives someone a clue if there is any, to my problem. :wall:

    Cheers .

  9. Thanks again BVC. (and SPINYNORMAN) Now I understand how the system works.

I should point out that I have tried the Konqueror Preferences -> Fonts and also Fonts in Look &Feel ut without success. This is in root only, in Account I can set up as I wanted OK

I think you would agree the text is damned ugly isn't it ??

Here's hoping there is answer to the problem.

    Cheers.

  10. Thanks BVC that will help immensely. I hope I get this part right this time.

I find the file Attachment part AOK as you directed but for the life of me I can't find the EDIT to click on anywhere on the page except on Galeons tool tab at the very top, and clicking on it just drops a menu as usual with nothing that seems to be appropriate.

I know your method will be the right one ( you must have done it hundreds of times ). I have experimented with selecting the screenie in File Attachments and then doing a Preview Post and it does not work so that EDIT bit sure is the key.

I hate to seem so dumb :wall:

Please, mate I await your further hand holding.

    Cheers. John

  11. Hi all.

This ia not a troublesome problem but it is annoying since it is so ugly. :furious3:

    Here is a screenshot,

    file:/home/john/snapshot3.png

I hope it shows up OK.

I have tried just about all methods of changing the font but it is obvious I am missing something and I just can't see what it is .

Can any help please . Thanks in anticipation.

  12. Thank you to all the posters. I have tried what all of you suggested but the only one whose suggestion I have been actually able to get some type of result is Qchems.

I typed his suggestion (in my account) and got the following:-

    [john@localhost john]$ find / -name stdio.h

    find: /etc/skel/tmp: Permission denied

    find: /etc/default: Permission denied

    /usr/include/stdio.h

    find: /EXCHANGE: Permission denied

    [john@localhost john]$

I gather from this that h stands for header so according to this it is installed in /usr/include. I have just looked at them and they are very detailed text files.

Question is do I need to do this in root mode to fully check or is this sufficient indication that necessary files are already installed?

Thanks everyone , we are making progress. John

  13. Hello folks.

I have double checked just about every package that can be installed or has been installed and everything seems to be in.

Have you any further ideas or suggestions??? I am quite willing to try.

    Thanks in anticipation. John.

  14. I had a similar problem. I too use a Promise Ultra66 in linux without difficulty normally. when I had the problem of not being able to use Partition Magic or the Linux Wizards to reformat or repartition the hard drive, I found the only way to resolve the difficulty was to use Windows because it uses the steamroller mentality. Partition Magic and Linux Wizards tend to go more the softly softly way.

Put in your Windows CDROM and pretend you are going to do an install. when you get to the part where you select the Partition to install, select the hard drive you want to fix as the hard drive of choice and go through the process of deleting its partitions and then select reformat.

When the reformat is complete then choose Escape button and abort the installation. Make sure you have your windows boot up floppy in so that as the computer reboots you can setup ready for the Partition Magic floppy. You should have no problem getting PM to read the "fixed" hard drive and partition it as you wish and format it in Linux format if that is your choice.

After all that, do a dummy up grade procedure of your Linux OS e.g. Mandrake 9.1 then do a 9.1 pretend upgrade. This way you get all the usual install detection and setting up without installing anything. Also if it detects that some bit of essential data is missing , it will add that data. When things get a bit screwed up from experimenting this is an excellent way to restore things back to running normal again.

Please let us know how you go . :D

Cheers for now. John (69yrs young)

  15. Thanks SCOOPY for posting.

The CDRTOOLS that I am trying to install is the tarball package as are also the pix-buf and the XCdroast packages. These are the same 3 packages I have successfully installed in Mandrake9.1 many times and on other peoples 9.1s also. Unfortunately the cdrtools package is the only one of the three that refuses to install into Man9.2.

I have installed just about every RPM in 9.2 that is sound related in the hope that might solve some kind of dependency problem but had no luck. Here is the Konsoles text:-

  16. This keeps coming up repeatedly.

Open up Konqueror and click on VIEW then click on SHOW HIDDEN FOLDERS.

    Go to /usr/share/applnk-mdk/.hidden/screensavers.

in there you will see a .directory, open it with Kwrite and you will most likely see a text something along the lines of

    [Desktop Entry]

    Icon=applications_sections.png

    Type=Directory

    Name [eng_Gb] = ScreenSavers

This entry is wrong and needs to be edited to read PRECISELY as follows:-

    [Desktop Entry]

    Icon=go.png

    Type=Directory

    X-KDE-BaseGroup=screensavers

    Name [en]=ScreenSavers

Upper and lower case must be correct as shown.

Save the changes and reboot. All your screensavers should now reappear in KDE.

Keep in mind that this must also be done in your account.

Cheers and hope this helps everyone.

PS this only applies to Screensavers that have got lost and not to screensavers that have not already been installed.

A previous reader of my original post very kindly posted it to Mandrakes help site.

The tragedy is that my solution is only a repair of the problem. The cause of the problem has existed in Mandrake9.1 and it is now also in 9.2 and seems to be caused whenever you do rpm updates or upgrades. It rewrites the .directory into an unusable form for no good reason at all.

  17. Just reread my post and realised that I had made a mistake in the line "As everyone knows, ................" I mean't to say ./configure and NOT ./install.

No the mistake was not from over celebrating my 69th birthday. I did celebrate it quietly with some three good friends at a home dinner this evening.

I think the cause stemmed from lack of sufficient sleep from spending too much time at this computer.

Still hoping someone can help me out . :help:

  18. Hello everyone.

    I have Mandrake 9.2 installed

I have installed the latest version of XCDROAST and its required pix-buf software and now am trying to install the required latest stable version of cdrtools-2.00.3. I get a whole heap data shown in Konsole including errors. it is almost impossible to make head or tail out of this readout. :wall:

I never had any problems at all installing it in 9.1 and in fact had installed it many times in 9.1 without a single problem.

As everyone knows, it does not use the usual ./install but uses

    make INS_BASE=/usr/local install

but it just won't install into 9.2, not even in root mode.

Any ideas anyone? (Yes I know there is K3B and I have it)

    cheers. John.

  19. Thanks FISSY for interrupting your New Years celebrations to drop in a response.

Also my extreme apologies to the Moderators for stupidly placing this thread in the Wrong category. It was only after I had Pressed the "Add Reply" button that I realized my stuff-up.

The iBook appears to have an ethernet card and internal modem according to the text on the Carton.

My system does not have an ethernet card. I have Windows 2000 Pro and also Mandrake9.2. At this stage I am not sure whether my Mainboard A7N8X-Deluxe has on board ethernet. I will have to check this out since I have never ever used an ethernet facility. As far as I can ascertain, the iBOOK uses OS/X or whatever it is described as. It was bought setup and has not been altered since purchase.

Lets keep posting. Cheers. John :D

  20. Hello. A Happy New Year to everyone around the Mandrake world.

I have a friend who has lots of documents (too many and too large for floppy discs)

on an ibook and wishes to totally transfer them all to a normal PC ( using my computer--- burning to a CDROM and then ultimately loading the CD into her computer at a later date of her choosing. (She has no CD burners on the iBOOK or her own PC and as we all know the iBOOK has no floppy setup.)

The iBOOK has a spare USB port so I am wondering whether I can connect the iBOOK to my PC by using a suitable USB cable, going Usb to USB without doing the complicated sort of Computer to Computer setup I see talked about so much in these forums.

I only want to COPY or MOVE documents from iBOOK to the PC without any other actions or editing from the PC or the iBook.

I am happy to consider advice or suggestions on my idea. If it can be done then OK. If it cannot then I will not under any circumstances consider suggestions that require me to install hardware cards for whatever so please save your time and mine by NOT going in that direction.

Looking forward to hearing from you good people.

  21. I thank you yet again XOOX. :D Did what you did and it works AOK. rebooted and then clicked on the <XSANE> and it worked perfectly normally. Thanks to your explanation I also know a bit more about how my system works.

Happy New Year mate and enjoy yourself tonight .

    Happy New Year to all.

  22. Hello "Ancient". Happy New Year to you and to everyone out there.

So you are using the two drives as single drives and not in a Raid arrangement.

Obviously everything is working AOK at the moment.

The only Raid mode you could use without totally clearing and reformatting your Hard Drives and reinstalling everything all over again is RAID.1 i.e the two hard drives mirroring each other.

Prior to setting up RAID1 you would need to transfer EVERYTHING on your 2nd hard drive on to the 1st hard drive that contains your OS and programs. Are you using a dual OS boot setup, namely are you using both a Windows OS and a Mandrake or other Linux OS ???

If the answer is yes and the Raid system is By Promise Technology then I would suggest you go into Windows to do the raid setting up because I think the Promise system instruction is only written for Windows.

This is not a problem regarding your linux setup because when the Promise RAID1 is commenced, it faithfully copies every single bit of data (Linux and Windows) anywhere on the Main hard drive to exactly the same place on the presently empty 2nd hard drive so you end up with the two hard drives being identical .

You should then still have your dual boot setup.

Has anyone else got a Promise RAID Array (hardware) setup running under Linux (not a Linux software RAID system) if so could you please contribute with advice etc ????

    Cheers . John (69yrs young)

  23. Hello CONEHEAD66.

I think I was the one who thought you may be giving up to easily.

It is fantastic to see you are still pressing on and learning rapidly all the time.

Give a coupe of months or so and we will possibly be seeing YOU giving helpful hints to others.

Keep up your good effort and have a great Mandrake New Year.

    Happy New Year everyone.

    John. (69yrs young)

  24. I just went to where you suggested to change the Scanner desktop Icon title but it seems it is different in Mandrake9.2 as compared to Mandrake9.1.

When I get to /dynamic, I get /scanner instead of /scanners then I get a choice 3 icons namely gnome.desktop, kde.desktop and xsane.desktop. When I click on either the 1st, 2nd or the 3rd one it opens up the XSANE program. Even right clicking on any of them and selecting open with Kwrite shows Name=XSane $device and not the title as shown on the desktop itself. It looks like more searching is needed. :wall:

    Cheers. John
