  1. Hi again, I am using the kde environment. File manager? bookie
  2. Hi chris:b, I should have said that I was working with the standard MDV installation. I usually send files to the trash/wastepaper basket and then empty that as a user - not from the command line. I have read about windows users putting files in the rubbish basket and then emptying it without being really erased if you know what I mean. I realize that there are many recovery programs for windows because windows is not that great at erasing. That is why i was surprised to find the 793mb in the folder already mentioned. I could perhaps start learning removal at the command line like proper Linux users. bookie
  3. Hi again, after working with MCNLivecd for a few days I think it has great potential. I am still learning basic commands - which depress the hell out of me at times - but you have to keep trying and trying to at last you see a light at the end of the tunnel. I would like to know how to write the command to write an iso image - making sure it is created on a certain partition in a certain file etc. If I give a scenario, perhaps someone could give me the commands? I have created a special partition to save the most recent iso images in case of crashes. This partition is sdb7 and is called /me1. Not very original but it serves a purpose. If I am to give the command as root to make my iso, what would be the appropriate commands with the above info? Also, I am wondering if there is a way to search for previously created iso's that one hasn't been able to locate because of not giving the right pointers!! bookie
  4. Hi again, still trying to find my way around the MCNLivecd. I hope that we didn't get off to a bad start chris:b? Without trying to be offensive I would like to point out that some times the people in the know do not take into consideration that we who are learning are not on their level of expertise - otherwise we wouldn't need any help - would we? I am not writing this with the intention of offending chris:b or any other very capable Linux guru - it's just we sometimes need a little mothering ( without the risk of being offensive) by the people that can. The questions that we sometimes put to you experts might seem trivial, but for us this is all part of the learning curve. Once again, this is by no means a dig at any one in particular - more of a general point of view. I am a long way from being Linux competent, but I am learning something new everyday, and for someone with a limited brain capacity Ha,Ha, I am getting there slowly. I will be open and say, from what I've read, chris:b is a very helpful influence on this forum. It impresses me that people devote so much time to helping others. i would like to finish by saying that it is fantastic to be a part of the Linux experience. It is a shame that the windows enthusiasts do not know what they are missing. Keep up the good work!! bookie
  5. Hi again, been working with MCNLivecd. I was looking at removing excess files before creating a livecd, but found that after first putting the files in the rubbish bin and then emptying the rubbish bin - they still exist? In an hidden folder /root.local/share/trash I found 793mb of so called erased files? I was under the impression that when you erased something using Linux it stayed erased? Can somebody give me some advice on how you can erase so that they don't take up space. bookie
  6. Hi Steve Scrimpshire, I looked at your link from iomari and thought that it would be useful to contact iomari to see if I could get some help. Do you know if iomari is still active? I have left a message for iomari but, as yet, haven't had a reply. Using genhdlist I have created new lists for the rpms in the media folder without problem. What I should have realized is that so many other things to be updated in order to continue. I am at a loss as to how to proceed? I really should start over and create a new updated version from the ground up. But once again not sure how to proceed? Can anyone point me in the right direction? bookie
  7. OK I guess I was barking up the wrong tree. Thanks anyway. bookie
  8. Thanks guys for replying so promptly. Just wondering about something (sort of causing an itch) not infectious I do assure you. Pmpatrick you mentioned cd to rpm folder. Well, I maybe stupid, but I changed all the obvious files that corresponded with each other and removed a few that I didn't want in the new updated version. All that took quite a bit of time. Don't know if you have a better solution for the next time? OK because I have already created the media file with updates and removals how I want it - will genhdlist create new lists for my rpm folder that I have created? Did you agree that the link I provided was a little short on information? iomari's post is also very helpful - although a little dated, but valid nevertheless. I'm sure to have more questions so be prepared. bookie
  9. Hi again, I wish you had answered my questions because I feel that there are unanswered ones: 1. Do I install powerpack+ 2007.1 onto my computer without a home partition? 2. Do I need to create a partition for MCNLive cd? 3.Does it affect the proceedings if I update my powerpack+ first. 4. Powerpack+ is on two dvd's. How will that be affected? Can I install the second cd. so that it becomes part of the live cd, or will the links included in the original dvd's be included? Sorry to be a pain, I'm a black and white kind of guy with a limited brain capacity Ha, Ha. Looking at my post - I had forgotten on the second post to add the above info, so for that I apologize. bookie
  10. Well, I am here now chris:b. I hope you don't mind me adding the questions here as already discussed Need a few answers to questions concerning creating a MCNLive cd. If I run a few things by you, you can tell me yes or know? Do I understand you correctly that to make this live cd I should do a normal install of powerpack+ but without adding updates or a home partition? I have already burned MCN live Toronto.iso onto a cd. How do I transfer the files from the cd to the computer exchanging them with the ones you mentioned? When you boot the MCN live Toronto.iso you are given a few choices as to how you would like to proceed. For the ease of exchanging files - would it be best to install the cd on the hard drive? Creating a live cd/dvd is an interesting idea. Many of the distros have that choice now, so it would be nice to create one of powerpack. bokie
  11. Hi to everyone at MandrivaUsers.org. I am new to the forum and will get right down to business. I am looking .for help in creating my own updated version of powerpack+ 2007.1. Mandriva talk about how easy it is to create your own updated version, but their info seems a bit incomplete. I followed the following link: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/SysAdmin/Config/MakeDVD When you upgrade packages to create your new update version - you need to update hdlist/synthes.hdlst information otherwise you new version gets a bit messy when the installer program throws a wobbly trying to install the new packages. I also am aware that the md5sum info will also need to be updated to correspond to the new packages. My problem is I don't know how to proceed with updating the hdlists etc. Is there anyone who is up on this? I would appreciate any help I can get on this matter. bookie
  12. Thanks for replying chris:b OK you can't help me with creating a new version of powerpack+ , but you can certainly help me with the live cd? If I run a few things by you, you can tell me yes or know? 13. Hi chris:b I am new to this forum and could do with a little help. I am familiar with Linux - but no genius. Still finding my way around. I was reading your above post and thought "what a good idea". I tried to follow your instructions - but me not being a genius couldn't get any where. If I am supposed to copy files from Toronto livecd, then I will have to install it? If you download the Toronto iso and burn it to cd then you can easily get at the files. My problem is that there are no files that you talk about, that is why I assume that one must install Toronto livecd? I thought it would be nice to make a livecd of the Powerpack+ 2007.1 version - or should I say dvd. My other question - if you don't mind me adding it here instead of starting a new thread is I have Powerpack+ as mentioned and would like to create a new dvd with the latest updates included - as to create a new updated powerpack 2007.1. Creating the bootable dvd isn't a problem. Mandriva give us all the required boot images. My problem is how to include the new packages - replacing the old ones and update the hdlists/synthesis lists, so that the installer doesn't go crazy. I think that is all for now. Want to give you time to digest everything. Would appreciate some help if you can: bookie
