  1. Tried True Image fron Acronis as well. However the only advantage I see with this program is that after you made the boot CD it can be used on any system.

The disadvantage is that it is much slower than both Ghost and Paragon and the image sizes are huge compared tho images made by the other programs. Made an image of a /home partition (size 400 MB) with only about 50 MB used and the image size was close to 400 MB!!! At full compression.Same partion image with Ghost and Paragon was about 3 MB.

If you have a small DOS partition Paragon is the way to go, with Ghost as second choice.

  2. Ghost 8.0 now works 50/50 which means after a restore I have to run the installation CD to restore LILO. No such problems with Paragon Drive Backup.

Works 100%. Little bit slower to backup than Ghost but the image files are a little bit smaller.Time to restore faster with Paragon. Max compression for both programs used.

  3. Thanks everyone for input.

Fully agree with the use of this type of software. I do backup after any new changes to the systems and can do all sorts of crazy things with files and registry without having to worry about ending up with non working systems. Have also stopped using any sort of antivirus software. If I get something bad it is quicker to restore an image than chasing after the virus. Have routinely done this for years with Windows of all versions. Still use Ghost (running in DOS) for this OS's.

When I started using Linux one of my conditions for even trying was to find a working backup/restore program for this OS. Did not want to spend hours on reinstallations after I crippled the system doing something wrong. Eventually I found ParagonDriveBackup which has been working perfectly so far, but also wanted to try alternatives. Tried Acronis TrueImage without much success. Had some correspondence a while ago with the Acronis support people saying something about "Directory index (dir_index) is a new ext2/ext3" not being supported.

After that I stopped trying. I think you all should try Paragon.

Regarding Ghost 8.0 I finally got a restore to work but first I had to use

MDK CD1 to rescue and rewrite the bootloader

  4. Has anybody successfully used new version Ghost Corporate 8.0 for partition

    backup/restore on Mandrake 9.1?

According to the specs for Ghost 8.0 it should support ext3 file system but I have tried without success. Also have had a lenghty exchange of messages with

Symantec support on the matter. Please have a look at this link:

    http://servicenews.symantec.com/cgi-bin/di...l&article=37065

After backup I resore and the system stalls with "Linux loading....."

For some time I have been using Paragon Drive Backup 5.5 for successfully

backing up and restoring, but wanted to check out this version of Ghost.

    Any comment will be appreciated.

  5. Here is my present lilo.conf

    boot=/dev/hda5

    other=/dev/hda1

    table=/dev/hda

    hda1 is FAT32 on cyl 0-257

hda5 is Linux root on cyl 258 -821

MBR presently contain bootmanager MasterBooter for dual boot to Linux and DOS

respectively. This is what I want to overwrite.

Should I just change the first line in lilo.conf to

    boot=/dev/hda

    and run

    #lilo -v

    is that all?

  6. Made a previous post on this subject but it got screwd up and its not there any more so I make another try.

Had a perfectly working system with Mdk 9.1/KDE now moved to new to new MB

and not so perfect any more.

During first startup on the new MB all new hardware is found and system starts OK,

but no modem (LT Winmodem) and no network.

Manually reconfigure modem and network and get them to work. Restart, but back to square one, no modem and no network.

Why is the new settings not saved? How can I get it to stick?

Managed to get one reply on the old posting before it disappeared suggesting I do an upgrade with the original CD's. Have done that but no change.

The new network card (ReakTek8139) is found but shows up with the old driver (VIARhine) ! How can the system from the old network files? Mabe this will install the correct drver?

  7. Had a perfectly working system with Mdk 9.1/KDE now moved to new to new MB

    Any comment appreciated

  8. Moved my working Mdk 9.1/KDE to new MB with different sound chip (CMI 8738).

The sound works after reconfiguration but AlsaMixer returns following error

"Function snd_ctl_open failed....." Removed alsamixergui and reinstalled but still does nor work.

    Any comment appreciated

  9. Had a perfectly working system with Mdk 9.1/KDE.

Now I have moved the HDD to another motherboard and things are not so perfect any more. During the first boot sequence on the new system all the hardwares are found and system starts. Sound works OK after reconfiguring but no modem (LT Winmodem) or network.

I then reconfigure network card and modem manually and everything works again and reboot. After restart again no modem and no network. Manually reconfiguration make it work again.

Why are the new settings not saved? How can I make it "stick" ?

    Any comment appreciated

  10. All of the following is installed

    libqt3-3.1.1-13.1mdk

    libqt3-common-3.1.1-13.1mdk

    libqt3-devel-3.1.1-13.1mdk

Probably need qt2, but don't know if qt3 and qt2 can coexist.

When I start to install qt2 all of the qt3 libraries seems to need

    to be uninstalled?

  11. Trying to compile software packages but run into following error

Qt configure error (Qt >=Qt 2.2.1)

Have Qt3-3.1.1 installed on MDK 9.1 and KDE 3.1

    How to solve this problem?

  12. Installed alsamixergui and started program.

Did unmute "surround sound" and increased volume and it WORKS!!!!

So now I have sound but can not get the recorder in Krec to work.

I can hear sound going from mic to speaker but nothing captured!

  13. Thanks bvc!

I will post the output of lspci -vv later. I am away from the Linux box now.

Just to reiterate my feeling about the mute/unmute situation.

Every time I open up Aumix the "mute all" is checked and I unckeck it.

Next time I open "mute all" is still checked.

Is there a way to be perfectly sure everything is unmuted and slides are set to 100%.

How do you unmute in "Alsamixer" ?

  14. Run

    localhost:/# rpm -ql alsa-utils

    /usr/bin/aconnect

    /usr/bin/alsamixer

    /usr/bin/amixer

    /usr/bin/aplay

    /usr/bin/arecord

    /usr/bin/aseqnet

    /usr/sbin/alsactl

    I think successfully

    then

    [td@localhost td]$ # urpmf alsamixergui

    [td@localhost td]$ alsamixergui:/usr/bin/alsamixergui

bash: alsamixergui:/usr/bin/alsamixergui: No such file or directory

    [td@localhost td]

In alsamixer I set all volums to 100% Still no sound.

When I run sound test in KDE ControlCenter the Arts volume display

moves and same thing when i try to run a mp3 file.

Have a feeling that sound drivers work but the whole system is muted.

Checked also that I have sound in Windows.

    In Alsamixer have following info:

    Card: VIA 8235

    Chip: Analog Devices AD1980

    Item: Master

The drivers for this chip in Windows are the ones for AD1980.

Had a look at Asus website for Linux AD1980 driver but only found

    for RedHat and Caldera.

Is this a path to persue or I should keep trying with the Alsa drivers ?

Feels so close but very frustrating!

  15. All this is a little bit confusing to me. I had no idea it would be this difficult to get a sound card working under Linux. I hate to point out what happens when one uses the more common OS.

Anyways, I am not going to give up yet!

During my previous effort I might had compromised some of the settings and have now done a clean install and rerun the procedures you suggested in your first post.

Doesn't matter to me, as long as it works. There is a document at ViaArena

audio spectrum is only covered by "built-in Alsa"????

    to modules.conf and restart.

Firstly when I log out system hangs on "Stopping alsa" have to reset.

After restart still no sound. Also now in startup dialog

    "Alsa 0.9.0rc8 via82xx"

Do unmute in Aumix, but read somewhere that this does not work for alsa, only for OSS. To unmute you need alsa-utils????

Is there any way you can unmute on startup? Sounds weired to me that the system is not started in a workable state.

  18. Have a MB with VIA VT 8233 sound chip.

Had a look a previous post on sound card problems and suggestions of

I just copied the file from the /root to new location and now everything

    works.

I drag "swriter" from /usr/soffice/program in Konqueror to the desktop and choose copy.

When I click on the new icon nothing happens! Same thing with "scalc" etc.

When I drag and copy "soffice" from /usr/soffice/ and click on this icon

    I get following message:

The application can not be started. The configuratin file

" /home/TD/.sversionrc " was not found. Do you want to start up the setup

    application to check your installation?
