  1. Thank you, Adam. Still, I think the right place to declare that supported upgrade is provided only through the ISO set is the front page of the official Mandriva site, near detailed instructions how to do it, and not to leave the non-professional users hanged in the air.

Now, I'd like to ask you what do you mean by "a traditional-installer type ISO set (Free, or Powerpack / Powerpack+)", do you refer to the 4 CD's set that can be downloaded from the site, or does that also include the Live CD? And what options should the user choose during the installation in order to upgrade the OS without deleting the configuration?

Regarding the curl/wget errors, I wasn't aware of that. I'll know for next time, so thanks!

  2. OK, I'm back.

I tried to run with the configuration graphical tool. I must say the beginning was promising: the first ~200 packages (out of 1150) were downloaded and installed properly.

    Ans then the OS crashed.

I couldn't even boot from Linux. I made a backup of all my stuff, of course, and I'm taking the first few weeks as an experiment anyway, but still, I must say I was a little disappointed.

I re-installed from the Live CD. I could choose to install it in "/" or in "/home". I chose the first option. The installation went smoothly.

Some of the configuration was lost on the way. For example, all the users were deleted, and all the programs I installed were also deleted during the format process. The good news are that /home directory, with all my stuff, is still there! furthermore, all my bookmarks are there. What I don't understand is, if the user was deleted, how come the bookmarks were saved? I thought the bookmarks were associated somehow to the user, because each user can define his (or her) own bookmarks.

I saw that some of the kind people who tried to help me are developers, or people who probably know the development group of Mandriva. If I may, I would like to use this opportunity to make a suggestion. I hope you won't see it as criticism, as my intentions are pure and totally constructive.

Ubuntu released a new version this week. I saw on their website a highlighted link to instructions as of how to upgrade from older releases. I think it is important, when releasing a new version, not to forget to add detailed upgrading instructions. Otherwise, unexperienced users, like me, may feel confused and even abandoned, or at least left behind.

As I am a newbie, I will probably be back with some more questions and challenges. I'd like to thank all the good soles  that took part in this thread, for putting their time and efforts and sharing their advice with us.

  3. It didn't help. I got "... retrieving failed: wget failed: exited with 1" message, then downloded some 20 packages, then again skipped the rest of the packages, and here I am...

I'm getting frutrated. Maybe I should try the Live CD installation. Has anyone tried it? I'm sure I'm not the first one to upgrade from 2007.0 to 2007.1.

    Let me quote the beatles:

    Help! I need somebody!
  4. I tried it, it didn't work.

For a minute I thought it would help: it started dowloading some packages, but after about 10 packages it printed the rest of the lines at the screen again, as if they were already downloaded. One thing I noticed, though, is that just before it started to download, it printed: "...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with one".

does anyone know what it means?

  5. Please rerun

    urpmi --auto-update

    in init 3 mode.

I reran it. I reran it not less than four times.

Every time, after the OS checks if all the databases are updated (they are), I am asked if I want to install 1157 packages (2557 MB, much better). After choosing Yes I am asked to chose a kernel version (one out of forty), afterwards I am asked if it's ok to remove five packages (I said yes), and then something weird happens: I get hundreds of lines being thrown to the screen in a split of a second, as if all the packages are already installed. Then I am being notified politely that "you may want to update your databases" or something similar, and that's it. After the reboot I still get the 2007.0 version.

Does anyone know what did I do wrong?

  6. Which mirror have you used and did you select 2007.1 in easyurpmi (and not accidently 2007.0)? Maybe you got a mirror that wasn't synced yet or that had some faulty configuration... Or you simply selected the wrong release...

I don't think so. I picked 2007 Spring release and I remember I saw 2007.1 packages downloaded. Hereby is the code the easy-urpmi provided, with the all the servers:

    urpmi.addmedia main ftp://mirror.inspire.net.nz/mandrake/official/2007.1/i586/media/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz
    urpmi.addmedia --update main_updates ftp://mirror.inspire.net.nz/mandrake/official/2007.1/i586/media/main/updates with media_info/hdlist.cz

    urpmi.addmedia --update contrib_updates ftp://mirror.inspire.net.nz/mandrake/official/2007.1/i586/media/contrib/updates with media_info/hdlist.cz

    urpmi.addmedia --update non-free_updates ftp://mirror.inspire.net.nz/mandrake/official/2007.1/i586/media/non-free/updates with media_info/hdlist.cz

  7. Yes, well, with all the excitement I forgot some important details.

I did it via the net and used arctic advice:

In order to minimize the risk of something breaking, I also suggest that, before you launch "urpmi --auto-update" or "urpmi --auto-select --auto" (--auto-update is the recommended procedure), you go to an init 3 environment (=text mode only)

    process is:

    press ctrl+alt+f1

log in as root, then type

    init 3

    then perform

    urpmi --auto-select -auto

    or

    urpmi --auto-update

After running the easy-urpmi script and updating my databases I used the urpmi --auto-updte option. it downloaded and installed some packages (59 MB, if I'm not mistaken), and then I did reboot.

  8. OK, I've finished updating, and I'm a bit confused.

I hope I don't sound silly, but how do I l know if I actually upgraded the OS? On one hand, I see I can use Metisse engine, for example. But on the other hand, I still got gnome 2.16 (and not 2.18), and firefox 1.5 (and not 2, and I don't even see it in the grahical configuration tool, which, BTW, looks exactly the same, although I read somewhere it was supposed to be improved). Does anyone have any idea how can I have the full upgrade?

  9. I can't (yet) vouch for the install of 2007.1, but I installed 2007.0 from the One Live CD and can highly recommend it - it worked like a charm, and at least for me worked much better than installing from the mini-install CD.

I also installed Mandriva 2007 from the Live CD, and also for me it worked much better than the the full CD's installation, but this time I'm talking anout upgrading, and not a fresh installation, so I'm sure you can easily understand my concerns.

  10. Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie to Linux. I installed Mandriva 2007 (my first Linux ever!) a few weeks ago and I am very impressed.

I want to update my OS to Mandriva 2007 Spring release, but without losing the configuration and the preferences (identities, users' preferences, mail, bookmarks, etc.). Is there a way to do that through the configuration tool, or through the Live CD?

    Thanks in advance!
