  1. For the latest version of Firefox you can:

    1. Use the latest Mandriva release (2007.1) which does have FF 2.0.0.3

    2. Use another, "bleeding edge" distro

    3. Use the binaries from ftp.mozilla.org extracted somewhere at your user directory.

    4. Compile it from source yourself

    5. Buy a MAC and use the "universal binary"

    6. Use windows, where everything is precompiled.

Using option (3) as you apparently did, the "cannot execute" message means that you don't have permisssions to run the command- that is, you likely unpacked the tarball as root. Equally likely, the whole "firefox" directory you've extracted has wrong ownership/permissions.

Option 6 is beginning to sound better and better! LOL. I'm getting used to Konqueror so I may just stick with it. I principally wanted Firefox for Password Management but have now discovered kdewallet, so...

  2. Unfortunately smarturpmi lists neither distrib-coffee nor anorien mirrors the two most up-to-date mirrors

    ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/.../MandrivaLinux/

    ftp://anorien.csc.warwick.ac.uk/Mandriva/

these are the only 2 public mirrors people from mandriva, though not officially, make sure are working properly, if you are using cooker or want to upgrade your distro early it is best to use these mirrors....

I tried to install these repositories and got this:

    ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/.../MandrivaLinux

Unable to update medium, errors reported:

...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with 9 or signal 0

It's impossible to retrieve the list of new packages from the media

`coffee'. Either this update media is misconfigured, and in this case

you should use the Software Media Manager to remove it and re-add it in order

to reconfigure it, either it is currently unreachable and you should retry

    later.

    and for Anorien:

Unable to update medium; it will be automatically disabled.

    Errors:

...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with 3 or signal 0

It's impossible to retrieve the list of new packages from the media

`Anorien'. Either this update media is misconfigured, and in this case

you should use the Software Media Manager to remove it and re-add it in order

to reconfigure it, either it is currently unreachable and you should retry

    later.

    hmmm... any suggestions?

  3. One of the mirrors does have a working RPM for Firefox 2.0. It's not one of the official mirrors, something else I got from easy-urpmi. In any case, it works nicely.

Would be kind of nice if you told us where it can be found. I've tried everything trying to install the download from firefox and when I try to run firefox in the exctracted directory, I get "cannot execute". Yes, I have updated glibc.

    Thanks.

  4. I just tried Puppy. Checked the file after downloading and checksum was fine. Burnt to CD and on boot reached a certain point and then:

Error, cannot find puppy on idecd boot media

    pupmode=1 pdev=1

    exited to ramdisk command line.

    hmmmm...

I was able to find the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD and I'll give that a try. Quite a difference in the download: puppy less than 100M, Xubuntu almost 700M!

Good news! I was able to do a full install of Xubuntu and I'm amazed at the results. Runs beautifully on a 633 processor with only 128M RAM. Downloaded the Desktop Guide so I can become a Linux GEEK! :)

I like it. I think you have a convert.

    Thx!

  5. Xubuntu requires 192M RAM to install

    From my Xubuntu link:

Alternate Install CD only required you to have 64MB RAM

  6. Using an old computer I am trying to learn Linux on. :) only 128M RAM. Hope it's enough!

It's enough to learn Linux on, but not enough to use KDE or Gnome with Mandriva. I would suggest you try Xubuntu, and even with that you will have to use the alternate install Cd to install with a 128 MB of RAM.

    http://www.xubuntu.org/get#requirements

You could also try Puppy Linux:

    http://www.puppylinux.org/

I suggest these because I have used them both on older systems.

Xubuntu requires 192M RAM to install so I think I will give Puppy a try. If Fred Langa likes it, it's got to be good!

Thanks to all who helped. I'll let you all know how it goes.

  7. I have ADSL connected to my Linksys Wired & Wireless router. I have no issues with any of my other computers, whether wired or wirelessly connecting to this router which is connected to my ADSL Modem. This statement was true until I installed Mandriva Linux 2007, Now NO Matter what I do to Mandriva to try and make it connect to the Internet via the Router and Ethernet eth0 connection setup, I can't figure out the magic combination it is looking for to make it connect to the internet.

Someone Please Help me, I stayed up wayyyyy tooo late last night on this, it just shouldn't be this hard.

All the IP, DNS, Etc.. are stored in the Router, and it uses Auto DHCP to Dole out the IP Addresses etc.. to any / all computers attempting to connect to the internet via it, meaning the router btw.

Please Help, either here, but preferably via email at: storm3@twlakes.net

    Thanks again,

    Ken

I don't really know if this will help or not because I am a complete newbie but...

I found that when using a router to connect two computers, it would not work when encryption was enabled if the two computers were using different operating systems. When I disabled encryption, it connected just fine.

  8. Welcome to MUB, which window manager did you select to use on installation i.e. kde, gnome or something else?

Beats me! :) The install was pretty automatic and I don't remember choosing a windows manager. I did updates and installed a bunch of kde and gnome stuff. When I type kde or gnome in the console window, I get command not found.

  9. I have installed the latest version of Mandriva and all went well. When I boot, I get a blank blue screen with two white windows on it (console style) where I can type text commands. No graphic desktop. Running startx tells me that the display server is already operating and if I load Firefox, I see graphic images and it runs fine. But no graphic desktop.

I figured out how to get to the Control Center but when playing around in there, I clicked on Display Logs. That brought up a window which contains logs of everything that I do, but it sits over the Control Center window which cannot, therefore, be accessed. The window containing the logs cannot apparently be moved or resized. How do I get rid of it?

And without the menus on the graphic display, I am forced to do everything using the command line - and I'm a newbie!! Imagine! How do I get to a file manager or text editor so that I can add or remove files and edit them?

    Thx.
