  1. Hi

    Thanks for the help.

Installed straight from a 2007 Spring CD/DVD, previous problems on another computer was hardware related( now running 2008.0 ).

    So no mix of versions.

    # init 3

    <login >

    # startx

    Is working.

"check your updates for kde" ... "check your updates for x"

The updates are the latest according to the 'update button'( in sync with MCC updates).

gdm is already installed , but running it would not solve the problem.

I'm more intrested in why this happens and tools to trace it.

    But thanks for the suggestion.

  2. Hi

    Thanks for the suggestions Scarecrow

    Any more debug hints/tools ?

    - firefox -safe-mode,starts.

    - firefox -safe-mode %u,starts but at www.%u.com

    - all the files/directories in ~/.mozilla is rw for USER.

    - The theme is the default theme.

    - Extensions

Why should they start acting weird now ?

In that case it must be caused by an update of an extension or mandriva.

And if I remember correctly , NoScript is the only extension updated

    the last few weeks.

If it was causing the problem more users should've noticed.

But anyway I'll try it with my 'odd' extensions disabled.

    //

  3. This started a few weeks ago.

Now I'm regurarly kicked out to my login window.

  4. Hi

Recently Firefox 2.0.0.8 is crashing frequently( kdm as well but I'll start a new thread for that ).

I'm running 2007.1, installed from disk and updatetd with easy-urpmi setup.

    Kernel 2.6.17-16md

Found a thread where Scarecrow gave a tip on how to trace firefox !

Got firefox running and got a sigsegv and this is the last part of the logfile.

  6. Hi guys

    Need help/ideas.

Machine 1 Running a 2007.1 which was ( not so successfull )upgraded from 2007.0, by changing sources,

    Machine 2 Running a 'fresh' installed 2007.1

    Machine 1:

Everything worked Ok for me until I made updates/upgrades 10th October,

this update/upgrade installed 3 libvorbis packages.

Then the machine crashed when I started a FAH folding job.

    Machine 2 :

The 10th October update installed 4 libvorbis packages.

Works OK, no crashes, FAH folding running.

This made me search and I found that

    on Machine 1 :

Had libvorbis----.2 installed and libvorbis---.3 locked

    Machine 2 :

    Had libvorbis----.3 installed

So this is one of the places where my upgrade failed.

So now I'm assuming, that I've got more of these mismatches.

Is there a way to find/solve these ?

    I..e.

    1) Detect mismatches/problems

    2) Upgrade/update them

    Thanks for any help

    //

    PS

A fresh install is the last resort.

  7. For the proc thing, check your /etc/fstab you should have it entered in here to be mounted at boot.

Here's a sample, from Ubuntu, but it'll work just fine for Mandy too:

    proc /proc proc	defaults 0 0

just in case it's missing, you can add this to yours and then reboot and see if it sorts it out.

    Tried that, didn't work.

Then I checked the files and directories at /

On my old installation I have root as user and group on this 2007 Spring I have adm as group

    at some places.

The only difference is the security level selection in the installation phase.

    drwxr-x--x 2 root adm 2048 Sep 22 18:39 bin/

    drwx--x--- 3 root ctools 1024 Sep 26 08:38 boot/

    drwx--x--x 18 root root 14540 Sep 26 08:38 dev/

    drwx--x--x 95 root adm 5120 Sep 26 18:02 etc/

    drwxr-x--x 4 root adm 1024 Sep 22 19:13 home/

    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Sep 22 20:58 initrd/

    drwxr-x--x 13 root adm 4096 Sep 26 08:38 lib/

    drwx------ 2 root root 12288 Sep 22 18:44 lost+found/

    drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 1024 Sep 22 18:51 media/

    drwxr-x--- 4 root adm 1024 Sep 22 18:51 mnt/

    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Dec 6 2006 opt/

    dr-xr-x--- 126 root adm 0 Sep 26 10:38 proc/

    drwx------ 14 root root 1024 Sep 26 18:00 root/

    drwxr-x--x 2 root adm 4096 Sep 22 18:39 sbin/

    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Mar 9 2007 srv/

    drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 0 Sep 26 10:38 sys/

    drwxrwx-wt 9 root adm 1024 Sep 26 18:03 tmp/

    drwxr-x--x 14 root adm 1024 Sep 22 19:01 usr/

    drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 1024 Sep 22 18:59 var/

    Changed permissions chmod 555 /proc

and ps worked fine. But some time later the permissions had changed back to drwxr-x---

and ps gave the 'mount proc ...' error again.

So this is some internal safety handling when selecting 'higher' as Security level at installation.

    SOLVED BY :

Changed the security level from higher to high, this removed adm as group and solved my problems.

    MENU: System->Configuration- >Configure Your Computer , same as cli ->mcc .

Use the Options dropdown to select Expert Mode.

Then Select Security and then select "Set the system security level and the periodic security audit."

There you can change the 'Security Level' at the bottom of the screen, I changed it from higher to high.

Out of curiosity : Can anyone please direct me to some documentation of these security levels ?

    //

  8. Yes removed or not installed correctly.

The only 'abnormal' :D thing installed was 2 ati packages.

Now for the nuts and bolts.

The ps problem got back searched and found no solution.

    $ ps

Error, do this: mount -t proc none /proc

    $ su

    Password: xxxxx

    # mount -t proc none /proc

    mount: proc already mounted

Scarecrow you've been an Ace so far , how about this one ?

Does my selection of stronger security mess with the /proc accessability ?

    //

  9. Did you lose KDE, or the x-server in general? Are you able to login to ANY desktop/window manager environment?

Yes, I'm able to login to a gui with gnome, and the cli-logins is also accessible.

    /usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon is running.

When trying to change login screen( to add kdm ), gnome complains that

"You might in fact be using a different display manager, such as KDM or xdm. ...".

I can understand that as,kdm is running and gdm is not.

But where did my kdm alternative in the login screen disapper ?

And why does I run gnome together with kdm, haven't been messing around with these things at all.

Any connection with the , ps problems ?

  13. Thanks Scarecrow

I installed kmix and rebooted to get a device in kmix.

All I had to do was to raise the sound level.

So now I got sound from the web

The /dev/cdrom has access problems ,

I recognise this from other thrads so I'll check them out.

    Solved

    PS

It wasn't user threads it was in wiki and general help.

Yes I can understand the priorities.

But it seems like it's been taken care of now.

    PS

By the way, during this search I found some old mandrakelinks

wicj gave 404 errors. Replaced mandrake with mandriva and

    everything worked.

Does anyone want to take care of the links ?

  15. Thanks for the help everyone, if I'll keep getting help like this I'm sure I'm

    up and running soon.

This is by the way written on my 600Mhz 512 MB Dell , with mandriva.

The other, non working, machin has more memory and speed.

The problem is I don't remeber if I choose lilo or grub( default or not default ).

  16. Hi again

It seems like you're way ahead of me.

You have to help me more,

    because I don't understand

"what does it read first line of the boot?"

When I boot from the Rescue-System CD ??

This is how I do it right now:

    I boot from a CD , where I get a GUI.

There I chooseRescue->System mode where I manually mount

the harddisks in the Secondary ide position to /mnt.

Then I can chose if I want to go to a console so that I can get a cli inteface

    to access the harddisk info.

This is the first place wher I have a cli-prompt.

And this is the only way I've found to edit files on my linux partitions.

  17. Hi

    Using 2007

Had to swap ide connection for my harddisks.

    Restarted

Got to the dual boot window, where I can selct

    - linux

    - xxxx

    - yyyy

    - windows

    Windows works ok.

But when I select linux , everything hangs in that window.

Tried the third option , and what I could see I had problems with mount/unmont.

It seems that I need to tell some boot file/program that I've moved the harddisks.

    Any ideas/suggestions ?
