  1. actually the "conflicting" statements were spread out over several sessions and attempts.

I scrapped that install and started over, this time w/o evolution or vbox, and everything seems to be working fine.

I will add vbox next, but i think maybe evolution brings too much gnome with it for my tastes, and thats probably what was throeing me off.

right niw, i'm sitting at a nice comfortable 2.1GB (before vbox) so i'll let you know what vbox adds.

    thanks for your input though

  2. This is what I want to do, I want to know if that is how it is supposed to be done, as all the howto's I have read only say, 1 PC as server, and 1 PC as client, which suggests to me that you can only access the server from the client, not the client from the server, or something, it confuses me.

I have had each set up as both server and client, but still only managed to be able to access PC1 from PC2, and not the other way around. I know this could be caused be many things, but.

I guess I really just need to know what is the correct way to achieve what I am after, I want both PC's to be able to access each others files, not just one being able to access the other.

youre not trying to use the same account on both pc's are you?

and does the account your tryng to use have access to the folder that you want it tosee?

  3. well see when the original issue started. where the image jumped fom 3.1 to 4.4 gb there were no old iso's. It was only after I posted the original that I tried another master and didnt delete it,

but I do see the mis type in the command you asked me to post, (but when you said copy and paste, i thought you meant the results) so here, is , i believe, what you asked for:

so, although, yes, I do have ome leads, and am trying to learn, I hope that anyone with an idea would contribute.

I think there are probably a lot of folks who would like to learn more, but since there is no grand master .pdf on linux, they get wrapped around an issue, and without assistance, they go back to what they DO know.

I've often said that I think that you guys have done a great thing w/ mcnl, but unfortunately, even as "simple" of an install as it is, it's still a fairly large learning curve.

I was really excied about the possibilities, so i gave a fiend a copy on USB, and CD.

unfortunately, he hasnt the time (or doesnt make the time) to look at sites like this one (or even mandriva.com for that matter) and so if he gets stuck he gives up.

I think thats a shame. 1st because his ego wont let him ask a question, but worse yet (using the extreme absurd example) if he mentions logging into the GUI as root, he gets so lambasted the last thing he wants is to ask any more questions.

  4. Try this:

    ls -alSh /home/mindwavex

    Copy & paste, don't type.

If you see core* files, you have a problem.

    ls -alSH /home/mindwavex

unfortunately even AFTER killing and emptying that old .iso I'm still df >4.4GB

up from 3.1gb immediately after install.

the ONE thing I have done since I ran that remaster was to get my mail with evolution (ev was already installed in my setup) I can imagine that 27 test messages would make THAT big of a difference?

open to any and all suggestions

  5. Give the output of:

Ok thats everything anything besides the VAR look unusual? and maybe the VAR should look like that

Thanks in advance for any ideas any of you may have.

  6. How do you uninstall?

    I went through MCC

How do you delete stuff? Is it still in the trash?

    Nope killed al that to

    Do you work as root?

    When I needed to yes.

If you have a vbox disk image, it is not enough to "detach' it inside the VirtualBox program, you need to "delete" it manually, from within the dir where you created it. And use the command line, not graphically.

I havent gotten about to reinstalling VBOX yet. I thought I would "thin thinkgs out" a little more before I started the VBOX process again.

I've done a clean install from my own master BEFORE VBOX was installed.

Now I'm wondering if starting the WHOLE process over from scratch, as skinny as I can deal with, would be the best route.

I hate to lose the work I've built up so far, but it just doesnt make a lot of sense

  7. as many folks know I'm working on "adapting" mcnl in several ways. The most recent has been using Chris's scripts for a personal desktop' that could then be rematstered onto a dvd, so that if (or WHEN) things go south,, I can do a reinstall from the last known good config.

and if you saw my VBOX situation, you might have guessed that, that would be a good time to test the theory, so I did.

I used my DVD from the day before I installed VBX to comepletely rewrite the OSinto a 53GB / partition, and everything seems to be working well.

so I did a df immediately upon install and w/o any other drives mounted the install seems to be taking up about 3.3gb.

Useable, but still kind of big.

O i decided to uninstall a bunch of games, and Firefox, reboot and df, and NOW it apears as thoughy the install is taking up 4.4GB?

Ok, so I UNINSTAKLL apps and it takes up more room?

    something's not right.

anyone have any thouhts or idea?

  8. thats interesting

because it just started after the vbox install

its a 53gb drive, that has been yielding 1.2gb ISO's

only 11gb shows used, but that still too big, wonder whats taking all the space.

    the command line is:

    mklivecd --verbose dvd.iso

    any ideas?

  10. It's silly, but I NEVER managed to make a successful win2k installation in Virtualbox using NAT networking. The installation would ALWAYS bomb out/reboot and start again at the last stage.

Instead, I could install win2k without networking and add it after finishing the basic installation... go figure.

I never, ever had this problem with windowsXP, nor with windows2000 under VMWare (there using bridged networking).

that is strange. I never even considered the networking thing, it just worked.

of course now i realize i should have gone straight to XP, I thouht 2k would have been dramatically small, but not so much

  11. ok, I got VBOX up and running.

unfortunately the only thing i KNOW I dud, was uninstall vbox, install the dkms, reboot and re install vbox.

but now I have win2k running just fine.

UNFORTUNATELY the livedd I made says it cant find several files that I KNOW are there, and bombs out.

    so nak to that.

I wonder if its because the image is over 2gb????

  12. I know where you guys are going, like you I kind of scratched my head at why all the discouragement against using MCNL as your "main install"

but I have come around to Chri's line of thought.

I have several projects going at once. The first is to convert my entire house to Linux.

And although that seems pretty simple, I figured that using the technology behind MCNL I could put MCNL on a small partition and then all my data elsewhere, and roll from there.

works great, until you want certain updates. Those I could never get to work. Even Chris admitted that it wasnt something that MCNL was meant to do.

So if you look at my other messages you will find, that I was indeed (after several head butts) able to make my own install of Mandriva Free and using Chris' scripts and knowledge, able to create my own"backup/live" dvd.

This allows me to do several things, 1st I can carry my desktop ANYWHERE with me and 2nd if my C drive smokes, I swap it out and replace it w./ my personal "live drive (I remaster almost everyday)

my CURRENT challenge, is something that MCNL has going for ity, that I could never get to work in MCNL, but after much MORE head beating, I finally got to work on my pc, and thats VirtualBox. So instead of VMWARE or XEN I'm using THAT with WIN2k.

However NOW, my live dvd is blowing up.

So back to the drawuing board.

I REALLY do understand what your trying to do, I even understand and am starting to agree w/ Vhris' attitude about NOT using MCNL as your base OS, but sometmes it does seem like it would be easder, but then again easy never taught us much....

  13. As Chris will attest, I'm a little slow sometimes.

So I'm JUST now getting around to working w/ the VirtualBox edition of MCNL.

Since my earlier attempts at using it were completely Fubar'd (ok, maybe a laptop wasnt the BEST place to start), I decided I'd wait until I understood a little more about what MCNL had under the hood before I tried again.

Now I am FAR from being even a moderate user, but I have a few questions for anyone who has/is using VirtualBox/VirtualCity.

I have used vmware, but NEVERried anything like what MCNL as me thinking about. I also realize that this thought path will make the whole thing DVD size, and I'm ok w/ that. (or just a BIG usb key)

    1) I am reading the DOC's for VBX from the begining and just havent gotten deep enough to find this answer yet. But for space requirements. I tell VBX that out of the 1GB of ram I have I'm devoting 512MB to my guest OS, lets say a laptop spare installation of Win2K, then I need to tell it how much and WHERE the virtual Drive is going to be.

I regards to that, if I say that this guest OS needs 2GB of space.

Am I better off making THAT virtual drive static or dynamic?

If I make it static it "seems" as though I have just upped my MCNL requirements to 2.5GB, is that right? but IT WILL RUN FASTER?

    2) Again, lets say I'm using a guest OS of Win2k, with a VERY sparse installation, am I better off/Can I use a Win2K Install disk? Or would I be better off copying an ISO of that install disk to my drive somewhere? AND if I do THAT is THAT going to be rolled into a remaster of MCNL?

As some folks may have read, I have finally succeeded in installing my own MDV spring and using the MCNL tooste to remaster and "roll my own", however I found that in order to remaster the OS I have to UNmount the 280GB second partition that I created out of the rest of my HD. Otherwise my image goes up to 2.5gb and the dvd wont load.

My current remaster is 1.2GB and loads on everything I've plugged it into (no I havent tried a USB stick but I will), and I dont want to endanger the validity of the rest of the system.

I know this is a LOT of simple questions that will probably be answered by TRYING, but with a 15 month old at home, my TRYING time is rather limited.

Thanks to any and all who reply!

  14. Some more hints:

    - do all installations, updates etc before you add all the scripts. Otherwise some updates will overwrite the scripts.

    - never run automatic updates. it will pull in stuff that will break the mklivecd scripts (see the howto for more info)

    - if you upgrade your hardware to very new stuff, it is not 100% that the new hardware is configured properly. MCNLive is now with a kernel and drivers made some months ago. That is OLD . Some motherboards won't work, for example the Intel p33/35 that are in the new Dell Inspiron 530 serie, they need a newer kernel or some kernel arguments (all-ide-generic irqpoll pci=nommconf) to even start from CD.

    - if you want a Live DVD/CD that works on many different systems, don't install ANY proprietary graphic drivers, thus no propr. nvidia and ati drivers. But add all xorg-video drivers you can find.

    excellent ideas.

i had everything down except the toronto draklive copied over thanks.

would you mind reviewing a file I'm writing (a longer step by step how to) for a cass being taught here in orlando?

i'm just supplying the docs for it, i just want to make sure i', not saying anything blatently wrong.

    thanks for your help
