  1. Yesterday, I have watched the Real video feed of Miguel de Icaza's MonoDevelop presentation at Novell's Brainshare event on Mar 26:

    http://primates.ximian.com/~miguel/activity-log.php

    http://www.novell.com/brainshare/keynotes2004.html

(Check out Mar 26, Friday video, for that Mono presentation)

I hate to say it, but what .NET and C# will be able to provide, at least on the desktop, is very, very impressive. The presentation showed how Miguel embedded Gecko (the mozilla browser engine) in a simple GUI app in Mono under Linux, for just a few edit plus drag and drop from the MonoDevelop GUI Designer. And the Mono binary is instantly usable on Windows platform (that is, the seemless switch of widget from GTK# to Win32 GUI).

I think Miguel's presentation starts somewhere around 01:00:00-01:15:00, worthy check it out.

  2. Just drag and drop one the icon inside the K-Menu / GNOME Menu to your desktop, and modify the shortcut icon path to point to the new Mozilla location.

  3. "It's a new day, a new dawn, for Novell. And it's not just Novell saying it. It's the people who support Novell, who build their business lives around Novell, who are enjoying the return of new light and life to an old company."

  4. Some one should write a FAQ because this issue raises again and again: :wall:

    EDIT: Ok, it's already here:

    http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=12441

    From DOlson's tutorial:

    ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.x_0x/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so libjavaplugin_oji.so

For Mozilla version >=1.4, it should be instead:

    ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.x_0x/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so libjavaplugin_oji.so

where "j2re1.4.x_0x" is the version of java you have installed, the lastest one is: j2re1.4.2_04

  5. Update: The slow Flash problem IS fixed with FlashPlayer 7 for Linux. This how-to can be considered obsolete now.

Just grab the RPM of FlashPlayer 7 for Linux here:

    http://macromedia.mplug.org/

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Following information only applies to FlashPlayer 6 for Linux:

Many users may find that Flash animation in GTK-2.x+ build of Mozilla / Firefox to be very slow, here is what you can do to work around it:

    1. Speeding up Flash animation for GTK-2.x+ build (and 2.x+ build only) of Mozilla or Firefox:

    -> From Mozilla bug #219625

Just export this environment before starting Mozilla / Firefox:

    export FLASH_GTK_LIBRARY=libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0

You can add this line to the execute script such as "firefox.sh", so it will be exported by default.

    2. BTW, a new Linux Flash plugin update is released, 6.0 r81:

    # [LinuxFlash] flash-plugin-6.0.81 Update

    # Macromedia Linux FlashPlayer download

    # Mozdev: Bug fixed with Flash plugin 6.0 r81

Flash plugin 6.0r81 no longer depends on the old (gcc 2.96) version of libstdc++.

    3. Also, it looks like FlashPlayer 7 for Linux Beta is coming:

    http://www.markme.com/mesh/archives/004504.cfm

Note: This is re-posted from PCLinuxOnline.

  6. Speeding up Flash animation for GTK-2.x+ build (and 2.x+ build only) of Mozilla or Firefox:

    http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=219625

Just export this environment before starting Mozilla / Firefox:

    $ export FLASH_GTK_LIBRARY=libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0

You can add this line (without the '$' prompt) to the execute script such as "firefox.sh", so it will be exported by default.

  7. The latest Flash plugin version 6.0.81-1 should no longer have the libstdc++ (gcc 2.96) dependency problem.

    http://macromedia.mplug.org/

Also, if you install the rpm package, you can create symlink so that same plugin can be re-used for another browser.

    $ su

    # cd {your browser path}/plugins/

    # ln -s /usr/lib/flash-plugin/flashplayer.xpt .

    # ln -s /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so .

You can save some harddrive space with this trick, and when you update the flash-plugin again you should no longer need to copy the files again because they are all linked at the same source at /usr/lib/flash-plugin directory.

  8. Although it's late, but it looks like FlashPlayer 7 for Linux Beta is coming:

    http://www.markme.com/mesh/archives/004504.cfm

Also, a new Flash plugin version 6.0.81 is released, which is supposed to solve the dependency of libstdc++ (gcc 2.96) problem:

    http://videl.ics.hawaii.edu/pipermail/linu...rch/000106.html

You can download the update package here:

    http://sluglug.ucsc.edu/macromedia/site_ucsc.html

  9. Hey! im a linux newbie but not a HD newbie! I use custom partition and format tools and have experience with HDs. If my HD was a sansung I'd buy a new with no problem but its a 7200rpm 80gb maxtor. now i'll need to back up 80gb and say to the vendor: "This hd isnt good because mandrake ****** up its mbr! Change it for me pls"

I never heard something like that on other distros...

For me, a software that damages the hardware is a virus!

    mandrake is a virus!

    mandrake is a virus!

    mandrake is a virus!

Dude, read the Mandrake Bugzilla entry and you knew it is a Kernel 2.6 related new issue.

    http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7959#c21

Many of ocilent1's suggestion are solid and you can try and see if you can resolve the issue. According to many posters at LinuxQuestions, many of them found their ways to solve the problem.

I still believe the problem is fixable, unless you have an unlucky coincident harddrive failure on your own.

  10. PLF Real Codec pack + Totem does work in Mandrake 9.2, and 9.2 only.

You can check out the screenshot I added in my previous post, as Totem should have launched.

BUT if you have put MozPlugger or rpnp.so in the plugin folder, then it will be started instead of Totem.
