  1. Thanks ianw1974, When you say I can then delete existing Mandriva partitions, do you mean I would first be given the option to delete these partitions and then go on to create new ones? Also, if I'm at that stage in the installation of '06 and I need to abort to further seek clarification, how do I stop the installation at that or any point, as I recall during installation of 9.2 that there were no options to cancel the instal, and the only way I could think of to abort was to do a reboot by pressing the reboot button.
  2. Hi all, I have Windows XP running and I want to dual-boot with Mandy '06 which I have on a DVD. I have an 80gb and a 200gb harddrives and also have Mandy 9.2 installed. I get a bit confused when I try to figure out exactly which drives have what but I think the 200gb isn't where Windows lives. Can I use some of the left over space on the larger HD, how do I remove the current Mandy instalment, which I think may be also on the 80gb HD, and will I have to bite the bullet and re-format both HD's? I know how to remove/install HD's, I know that one is a Master and the other Slave and I know that there is a little plasticky thing, I mean tiny removeable thing that is sort off plugged into the back of one of the HD's which I think determines how the PC picks up on which one is Master? Basically, I'm a total noob at Mandy and need help with doing this installation right. With the 9.2 install I just clicked on the defaults and it went through fairly smoothly. I don't need any files from 9.2 I can completely obliterate it if only I knew how. below are my PC specs: AMD Athlon XP 2400+, 2.00 GHz ABIT VA-10 Micro ATX Motherboard - VIA KM400, 266FSB, DDR333, 8X AGP, MICRO ATX GENERIC 350W POWER SUPPLY LEGEND 512 DDR PC2700 SEAGATE 200GB H/D, 7200RPM 8MB Cache UATA/100 Hard Drive XpertVision RADEON X700 256MB 128bit DDR, AGP 8X interface, DVI-I, TV Out, Direct X 9.0 Architecture CREATIVE SB AUDIGY 2 ZS PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110D LITE-ON COMBO LTC-48161H LG FLATRON 710S XP Home SERVICE PACK 2 Any help greatfully appreciated.
  3. Thanks for your post coverup....I ended up reinstalling 9.2 and this time I left the graphics config set to "custom", so everything is sorted for now. Your tips will come in handy if that ever happens again tho'. No offence to scarecrow but I was starting to get a bit confused about the advice given, especially seeing as how I'd had Many 9.2 up and running before without much trouble. It was only when I tried to configure the graphics in the control panel that things went sideways.... Perhaps scarecrows post meant that on linux I wouldn't get the most out of my video card? I know that within XP there are a plethora of tweaks available with the Radeon X700, but I wouldn't know what my card was really capable of as it's my son who's the gamer and he doesn't fiddle around with the settings. All I want in the least is to see the desktop etc. Thanks to all..... BTW....how do I mark this thread solved?
  4. I'm not sure how to "run" the above....as all I see at the mo' is a black screen with the white writing which I think is referred to as "Konsole", I typed: # XFdrake Then I tried: XFdrake Both returned the same reply that Bash doesn't recognise the above as commands. Did I misinterpret your advice due to my noobishness?
  5. I am confused about the version of Mandriva I want to install. The one I have is for i586 and I have a PC and don't know if I have the correct linux version for me. My PC specs are: AMD Athlon XP 2400+, 2.00 GHz SEAGATE 200GB H/D, 7200RPM 8MB Cache UATA/100 Hard Drive XpertVision RADEON X700 256MB 128bit DDR, AGP 8X interface, DVI-I, TV Out, CREATIVE SB AUDIGY 2 ZS LG FLATRON 710S XP Home SP 2 Thanks.
  6. -SOLVED - Hi. I needed to reinstall mand 9.2 on my windows pc and i configured the video incorrectly. When i boot up into linux i get command prompt only. When i log in and type: startx I get this error: (WW) RADEON: no matching Device section for instance (Bus ID PCI:1:0:1) found (EE) No Devices detected Fatal server error: no screens found X10 Fatal 10 error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0:0" is there something I can type at command prompt that will overcome this error and start X or do I have to do another reinstall. My graphics card is an ati radeon x700 and i chose radeon in the configuration. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  7. Thanks Banjo, I printed out a copy of your experience and I'll read it thoroughly. It's quite daunting, when your used to Windows, and then you feel like someone turned out the lights..... I'm getting complaints from the rest of the household about the PC always being in Linux mode when they want a turn....but I'm going to stick it out and hopefully wave goodbye to Windows...
  8. I've only had Mandrake on my PC for about a week, and most of that time I've spent trying to work out why I don't have any sound....that's fixed now, but would I need to consider seeking out and deleting my old user dir .kde?
  9. Hi, many thanks for the posts! I'm sure I partitioned my HD 3 ways for Linux (they suggested it by default). What would happen to these 3 partitions, would 2006 recognise them and use them for the respective replacements or would I need to uninstall 9.2 first?
  10. Hi, I have Mandrake 9.2 and Windows XP on my PC and I just bought a dvd of Mandriva 2006. I would like to know if I install Mandriva 2006 will it update my current version of Mandrake or do I have to install 10.0 etc first? Can you go from 9.2 straight to 2006?
  11. When I put the audio cd in the dvd drive and type your recommendation into Konsole I get this: [mart@localhost mart]$ artsdsp kscd kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. kdecore (KAction): WARNING: KAction::plugAccel(): call to deprecated action. 12. Hi, when I opened kscd the screenshot you sent didn't match the version I have so I didn't have those options. Where it says: cd-romspeler you have /dev/hda selected. I have something different and when I selected hda it didn't fix anything it made it worse. I think my selection is /dev/audio cd or something similiar. If I put a cd in the dvd drive it show as playing but no info is displayed about the cd. When I changed it to hda it didnt play at all.
  13. :D :P ;) B) WooHooYippeeHipHipHoorah!!!! Thanks so much devries for coming back to my post~! Thankx to you I got sound....I got sound...I got sound...... I rebooted the pc and inserted a dvd with mp3's on it, double clicked on the cd drive icon on the desktop, double clicked on an mp3 file which opened Totem and the file started playing but still no sound. So I opened kmix and looked to the far left where I believed the main volume faders to be and the 1st one had a green light but the fader was right down. I activated the fader (right channel) dragged both faders to full and listened to beautiful SOUND!!!!! So now thats sorted I guess 9.2 does support my Audigy 2 ZX afterall..... I then put an audio cd in and opened kscd but although it recognised the tracks I couldn't get any sound.... I ripped the tracks using KAudioCreator and once I'd found where they were on the Hard Drive I imported them into Totem....and the rest's histoire I also copied the mp3's from the dvd drive into a folder I created...so I'm getting there..... I'm sweet with my digital camera as it was instantly recognised... if you can help with kscd it would be great too. B) (i'm all cocky now....)
  14. Ok devries, i did what you suggested and when I'm in services this is what I see in the right pane: Alsa.......Stopped.....x in the "On Boot" box..........When I click on Start, a window appears with the following text: Shutting down ALSA sound driver (version 0.9.6): ( OK ) Starting ALSA version 0.9.6: emu10k1 (via 82xx) ( OK ) Then I click on OK at the bottom and exit from the control centre. I'll place an audio cd in the drive and see if kscd will work...... kscd wouldn't recognise I had a disc in the drive and Totem crashed due to a fatal error... kmix has a blank box with no options now when I launch it....
  15. Yep I meant ZS.... can I update 9.2 from within the OS? Or do I have to buy the update. I checked your link and it was confusing for a noob like moi. I've already tried to update from within Mandrake and got lost somewhere.... I think the update is more complex than Windows XP. I don't know how to install anything from within Mandrake.
  16. Thanks devries, I went into BIOS and the onboard sound was enabled so I disabled it and booted into Mandrake. First of all I got this error: artsmessage Sound Server Informational Message Error while initializing the sound driver device/dep/dsp can't be opened (no such file or directory) The sound server will continue, using the null output device. I placed an audio CD in the drive and opened Totem. It recognized the cd, displaying the title but gave this error: There is no audio output available. With regards to Kmix, when I open it there's nothing to display at all, no choices in the settings drop down menu. If I open the Control Centre and go to the Hardware option and then look at the soundcard section I see this info: Soundcard: EMU10K2 Audigy Audio Processor. In the right pane is this: Vendor: Creative Labs Alternative Drivers: snd-emu10k1 Bus: PCI Bus Identification: 1102:4:1102:2002 Location On The Bus: 0:a:0 Description: EMU10K2 Audigy Audio Processor Module: Audigy Media Class: MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO If I click on the Config Module button the Parameters show as NONE. If I click on the Run Config Tool button the driver chosen is Audigy I'm experiencing point'n'click depravation here, lucky I've another computer alongside for foruming....
  17. I go to Start Application>Multimedia>Sound>Kmix Then a window opens and its a rectangle. It has file, settings and help menus at the top. Thats all I can see. I went to file and chose open a new mixer tab and the available option was to open a new tab called VIA8235. When I selected this option 3 tabs appeared. 1st tab is named VIA8235 2nd tab has the same name 3rd tab is VIA8235(1) At the top of each tab is a horizontal collection of icons with vertical faders below and on the bottom is a horizontal fader. Beyond this I'm stumped
  18. I had my sons MP3 player attached via USB and I opened the drive and double-clicked on an mp3 file and was asked what app I wanted to use. I selected Totem Media Player and the error it displayed was: Cannot open movie. I thought that was a bit strange considering the file was am mp3. My son isn't here for 3 wks so I can't actually get any audio files into Mandrake to test???
  19. I looked into Kmix and all I got was a long rectangular box with a lot of faders and icons at the top of each fader. I couldn't find a digital output to disable nor could I navigate to kmix>switches: audigy analog/digital output jack. I didn't know what to enable/disable in Kmix and I even searched the kmix help files. I launched Kscd and was able to see that the music cd in the disc drive was recognised and was playing merrily away albeit silently.
  20. Hello to all. I have Mandrake 9.2 and Windows XP on my PC. I'm needing some advice as to how I can enable sound when I'm in Mandrake. I don't know how to troubleshoot my problem or how to configure my soundcard in Mandrake. I have a dedicated sound card (Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZX) so I currently have the onboard integrated sound disabled (AC97). Is this a difficult task? I wouldn't know as I'm totally new to this OS.....
