found problem
I was trying to upgrade to glib-2-12-9
on install I had a message of of error that it was not installed.
how do I uninstall this version or any previous installs?

I have a dual notebook, XP and Mandriva 2006.
When I try to start Linux, KDE gui does not load automatically.
It takes me to the black screen (don't know what it is called), the prompt screen that that first asks for username and password.
I enter those names, in and it logs me in as root, but still at the prompt.
To start KDE gui I have to type in
KDE
at the prompt, and it loads all right.
And when I log off, it only gives the option of
End Current Session
Then it takes me back to the prompt to exit.
First off, it never did this before.
I was able to log out, and either restart to XP or turn off computer.
1. How do I get back to loading the KDE gui automatically?
1a. If not, then what is the command to exit KDE at the prompt?
I tried exit, quit, x, q
But nothing, I had to hit the off button.
I might have have had some issues with my TV Card in Windows XP.
I had to turn off the computer with the off button a few times, that is when the KDE gui did not start any more.
Both OS seem to work with the exception of the KDE gui not loading automatically.
Hope this isn't a hardware problem.
Thanks

Try these links
FlashPlayer 9 beta ->
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer9.html
The plugin that links Mplayer to Firefox, automatically ->
http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/download.php
mplayer 3.31
I am using Mandriva 2006, Firefox 2, MPlayer 1.0pre8-Fedora-GS-4.0.2
Even though FlashPlayer 9 is beta, it is stable on my system.
Before I installed, I couldn't watch streaming video and audio.
Now I can.
Hope it helps.

A restart of Firefox did it.

OK
I found a couple of million dollar downloads.
FlashPlayer 9 beta ->
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer9.html
The plugin that links Mplayer to Firefox, automatically ->
http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/download.php
The Mplayer plugin, can now view streaming QuickTime movies, at least this one ->
http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/spider-man_3/
the FlashPlayer plugin, can view YouTube videos, but in some sites, in only plays the audio and a black screen.
This is somewhat better than the previous version that I had, 7, which did nothing at all.
I don't know if this will ban me or put me on probation for linking these sites, but here goes,
as I mentioned YouTube.com and Yahoo games work on my system, but
these sites only play audio and a black screen ->
these sites are FlashPlayer required, right-click on the video sreen link and it states the version 7, even though I installed version 9 beta.
How do I get sites that only play audio and a black screen to play?
thanks for all your help.

I blew it at Easy urpmi.
Now at install of mplayer plugin rpm I get ->
unable to access hdlist file of contrib, medium ignored
I am going to look more into Linux commands, folder structure, and the basics of Linux before I tackle any more tasks.
Thanks.

I got Mplayer to link to Firefox to play Quicktime, but I am not sure about streaming . wmv
sorry for all the hassle but do read my last post.

permission to delete this reply, thanks

How do I link Firefox 2 to Mplayer so that .mov and wmv files open up?
Got Mplayer to link to Firefox!

In Hardware make certain there is a check mark in Full Duplex.
Yes it did help.
I knew about the KDE setting at Audio idle at 1.
But not the Full Duplex check mark in Hardware.
That was the magic button.
Thanks

where did my sound go!!!!!!!!!
It was working.
The last thing I was doing was trying to rename a folder
cd to that folder
mv badfoldername
this was a folder that i created with a few downloads.
there should not have been anything linked to this folder.
It killed my iNTERNET audio
Still can hear Amarok 1.3 and startup music, but no Internet audio.
What happened?
I don't even know where to start
I did change KDE audio configuration back and forth and restarted several times.
But still no sound
-
I just got xmms and its streaming fine...kewl
Lucky you
I had my audio working, but it keeps turning off, even if I do nothing.
Sometimes, if I give it a good old fashioned restart, it will work
I do here the start up music and amaroK 1.3 works.
But no streaming radio or Java sound.
I tried to install xine and all of its plugins, but that might have been when the sound crashed.
I noticed xmms also needs plugins, I will press my luck and see what happens.

This has probably been asked, but how do you uninstall packages that are tar.gz archived and had to be ->
./configure
make
make install
?
I am trying to install
ruby 1.8.5 tar.gz
tag lib 1.4 tar.gz
xine 1.13 tar.gz
which are ultimately needed for
amarok 1.4.2
After attempting to install these packages, they crashed the audio in Firefox 2.
No Java sound or Real Player 10 sound.
Is there an easy way to uninstall or do I have to manually find each file that was created?
Or how can I back track and restore Firefox back to audio working?
Thanks
NM
I think I just uninstalled taglib and xine, using
make uninstall

I am trying to install Avermedia TV Tuner USB 2.0.
In HardDrake 2, it lists
Identification
Vendor: ?AVerMedia
Description: ?TV USB2.0
Misc
Port: ?libusb:004:005
But it is in the Scanner Option.
I clicked the 'Run Config Tool' button, and asks for Mandriva CD 2
Did it, and Mandriva stated could not find Scsnner, click for Manual Install.
the next message displayed only scanners.
Still in HardDrake2, there is an 'Unknown/Others' List
The Tuner is listed as
Identification
Vendor: ?AVerMedia
Description: ?TV USB2.0
Media class: ?
Connection
Bus: ?USB
Bus PCI #: ?4
PCI device #: ?5
Vendor ID: ?1994
Device ID: ?59424
Misc
Module: ?unknown
But there is no 'Run Config Tool Button'
Can Aver Media TV tuner be installed, if so how?
Or how do I move the tumer from the scanner to a new list that has the 'Run Config Tool'?
I just contacted AverMedia via their site ot see if the TV tuner is Linux compatible.
Just checking to see if any one else had installed it already.
Thanks
Just got a reply from AverMedia Tech Support.
AverMedia TV Tuners are not Linux Compatible.

I am new to Linux as well.
Dual booted Sager Notebook - XP Pro / Mandriva 2006
Did you install Mandriva?
If so, hopefully you created a user password and kept it.
if so, log on to Mandriva.
open the Konsole, which looks like DOS in Windows
type in
su
it will ask for the password that you created
type it in
cd directory to your firefox app that tou downloaded, and follow previous instructions.
-
This is what I did
Download the tar gz
Extract it.
I think by default it will extract to
/home/j your name here /Documents/firefoxty
cd to that folder in Konsole
cd /home/j your name here /Documents/firefox
type
./firefox
to open
to create a 'short cut'
Rught click on the 'desktop'
and click
Create New ->
Link to Application
search for Firefox
does this help?

I have downloaded a CHM converter for Windows.
Then from Windows i converted the .chm file into "pdf" and "html" files.
Now, i just transfer the converted files to linux :) and use it easily.. ;)
This is less of a hassle ;)
Regards,
wakish
NM
My chm files open up in Konquerer.
Must be installed already.

What about Sun Studio 11?
Also, Intel had V 9.0 for free.
All that was needed was a free registration code.
But when I tried to install, it just looped me through the readme file.
Since then, they released 9.1 for a fee and I can't find 9.0 install support anymore.

run
kcmshell arts
or go to KDE ControlCenter -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System
and turn Auto-suspend to a lower value, then try again...
For KDE 3.4
System -> Configuration -> KDE -> Sound -> Sound System ->
check Enable Sound System
Lowering value to 1 sec in Auto Suspend did it!
Thanks a mil!

I have just Intalled Real Player 10.
And follwed these install directions
http://www.real.com/moreinfo/playerplus_in...amp;opage=linux
But no sound for Real Player either.
Did I miss something?
Also, I read another site that stated to modify PATH
echo $PATH
?I try this as well
Thanks again

are you using KDE or GNOME?
KDE
Mandriva 2006

Not so fast.
Now I can't hear sound in Java.
Is this is Java issue or Firefox issue?
How do I enable sound for Java in Firefox?
The only thing I found on the Internet was that someone else was having trouble with Flash and sound, in Firefox 1.5
But there was no real solution.
I haven't tried anything because I don't know where to begin.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks
That was a lot easier.
To link java to Firefox I did as you replied.
1. java plugin is in ->
/home/jose/Download/jre1.5.0_09/plugin/i386/ns7 // there is also a ns7-gcc29 folder, but that plugin did not work
2. Firefox 2 plugin is in ->
/home/jose/Documents/firefox/plugins // from previous attemps, there were other libjavaplugin_oji.so, that were either // linked to Firefox, or were just lying around dormant
// I removed those plugins using rm -r < file >
// there should only be libnullplugin.so in the Firefox plugin directory.
3. Using trial and error I copied and pasted each javaplugin one at a time, from the java directory to the Firefox directory.
If it didn't work, I removed and tried other plugin.
The one that work was in ns7 folder.
4. Tried java games at Yahoo.
Thanks again!

I had trouble upgrading to glib 2 12 9,
so I tried glib 2 12 0
to install, I cd to glib
./configure
make
make install
I get these messages after make
I am trying to install these for either a comic book archiver or a screen saver
The current stable version of GTK+ is 2.10.
The current stable version of GLib is 2.12.
The current stable version of Pango is 1.14.
The gui interface does not start automatically, I have to type in the
KDE command
And when it does log on, it gives message that the sound server crashed, so there is no audio.
The sound card works in Win XP
Logging out, it only gives the option of
End Current Session
These are some of the messages that are displayed when logging out.
SWT: 6820 GLIB -GObject - Critical - g_signal_connectdata: G_type_check_instance_failed
Warning - instance with invalid NULL class pointer
Last drop call before KDED crash was from application 'KDED' to object
KCrash: Application 'KDED' crashed....
waiting for X server to shut down synaptics device off called drKorqi
FATAL IO error Client killed
then it takes me to the prompt, but does shut down.
I have to hit the off button, which is making me nervous because it seems as if it is slowing killing the hard drive
If I can't rectify this problem, I might just reformat this partition from XP and retire Linux.
Also, when I clicked mcc in Konsole, I got this message
[jose@localhost ~]$ kdesu (kdelibs): WARNING: No X authentication info set for display :0.0
QMultiInputContext::changeInputMethod(): index=0, slave=xim
kdesu (kdelibs): WARNING: No X authentication info set for display :0.0
kdesu (kdelibs): WARNING: No X authentication info set for display :0.0
any suggestions on how to install glib?
thanks again
