  1. ok i just got a ide to usb cable so im going to try this. Im using lilo and i have to set linux up as the master HD and windows as the slave. and i have to "edit" lilo so it knows which HD windows is on right? im just learning my command line vocab so im alittle underpar compared to most people reading this. any help is greatly thanked.
  2. im running mandriva on one hard drive and when i want to use it i switch the harddrive out completely, when i want to use windows i switch the harddrive. My mainboard only has two open spots for harddrives but i have three. 1. windows 2. shared files 3. linux i never use the linux HD and the windows HD at the same time. My question is if i could plug the shared drive into a usb would i beable to dual boot windows and mandriva? How risky is this considering mandriva doesent really know i have windows because i dident intend to dual boot when i installed. Should i just use jumpers to say the linux drive is the master and the windows drive is the slave? would that work?
  3. ok i figured it out ...somewhat....i ran XFdrake and i told it to do vesa and now startx worked Im going to explore this more but any help is still appriciated
  4. Im very sorry this is my first experience with linux so i dont know what an rpm is. I am trouble shooting on my mac and i have no idea what im doing in linux. lol. i am begining to think i have gotten to deep. I dont know any commands yet and do not know how to install drivers or even see files. The most experience i have is with dos about 6 years ago so this is completly new to me. I am excited to learn though. Thanks for all the help everyone!
  5. Im almost there. I can smell it. I finally got mandriva 2006 to install. I login with no problem, then when i type startx i get this error: no screens found please consult the x.org foundation for support connection reset by peer. I have a feeling this is a problem with my ATI card... i know i know ati isnt linux friendly, but is there a way to get this to work...did i configure my graphic interface wrong when i installed?
  6. should i use the x86-64 version or the i586 version.
  7. ok then...lol....what is the easiest way to get linux on my machine lol...i guess i have to start from the begining. I have burned mandriva 2006 and mandrake 10.1 and both got screwed up some how. I burned both at the slowest speeds and did the checksums. Everything matched. aside from paying for it or haveing a disc shipped my only option is to download it. what ftp sites do you guys trust for your iso's and what do you burn them with?
  8. Ok, tried the text install, which started out ok but did the exact same thing fatal error finishing intialization. If i alt f3 then i see the log and it says what it does and it all looks good aside from some mounting attempts that dont look right to me, but i am new to linux so what do i know, they just look fishy. twards the end it says "short write (bad address)" "third party: using modules location /sysroot/tmp/image" "fopen(stage1.c:348) failed: no such file or directory" "unsetting automatic" "exiting bootsplash" I can type the stuff it says farther up if anyone needs me too. Im looking at the screen now and posting this on my mac so i can try suggestions real time. thanks for anyhelp. Aim s/n : bsucamino
  9. Thanks for going the extra mile. I will advanced options in differenct combinations to see if anything works out.
  10. Finally got mandriva 2006 dvd iso. generated checksum, matched, burned dvd at 4x my lowest setting, the main screen shows up well but then it says fatal error finishing initialization. Tryed noapic had no effect. mandriva linux 2006 free dvd i586 trying to install to system: amd athlon 2400xp+ asus a7n266c mainboard ati x1300 256mb agp video card 1.25 gig ram 20 gig HD this newbie is one tired newbie..sigh....waited 36 hours for linux and now it wont work. sorry but not impressed so far.
  11. Ok after almost 48 hours of download i will soon be ready to burn mandriva 2006 to dvd. I have downloaded the free md5summer checksum program and now i need to learn how to use that lol. I understand the need and concept of the checksum, i just dont know how to do it lol. I know i need to use md5 to compare my download with the original but how do i tell md5 what the original was? sorry for putting up so many posts. Thanks alot for everything so far. This forum has been much more helpful than anyother linux forum ive tried and it has even been better than the forum for my el camino, which provides no help what so ever. Thanks
  12. this is probably a stupid question, I'm new to linux. Im going to be using mandriva 2006 and was wondering if there was a chance that HL2 or Medal of honor pacific assult would work in mandriva 2006. I know that linux is not good for gaming and that i shouldent expect it to work, this is more just curiosity than for practical use. If there is a website which delves deeper into using windows app's on mandriva please post a link, and i apologize before hand if this is a common post. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  13. The 4600 is the exact same board as the 4400 the only difference is the clock speeds, i just dont know if i can play HL2 and Medal of honor pacific assult on it or not. my ati card has 256 memory but other than that i dont think the clock speeds between the nvidia and ati are that different even though the ati is fairly new it is just a budget card after all. I will get a new system sometime lol. maybe in 3 or 4 years ill go all out and get the high end stuff and then i wont have to worry about upgradeing for a while.
  14. thank you for the clairification, but i am getting the i586 version and i was wondering it it will work with my amd athlon. sorry for posting a common question, i just dont want to spend 25 hours getting a i586 version only to discover that it will not work with my hardware. Thank you again for helping the noob's out.
  15. im downloading mandriva 2006 i586. will this version work with my x86 machine, i still have some confusion over the whole x86-64, i386, i486, i586 thing. Its all very confusing really.
  16. I have my old nvidia gforce 4 ti 4600. I guess i could put that card back in if i had to, but i dont know if i could play my games on it or not.. I dont really want to have to switch the harddrive's and the video cards just to use linux...lol...there must be a easier way ya know? im trying to find the iso's for mandriva 2006 now. but so far havent found them. If i ever figure it out ill post back. Thanks. Ps. Keep the suggestions coming every opinion counts! Found the iso's. It says 27 hours for the dvd iso to download though! lol awell...cant have the cake and eat it too huh. thanks for everyones help. If its any easier my aim screenname is bsucamino feel free to send me suggestions if you want to, im open to as much info as i can get at this point.
  17. I got my version from my roommate. Im in college. i dont know where he got his but yes mine is a copy of a copy. Is mandriva 2006 free? if it is where can i download it or get it? Thanks again for the help. I have tried to boot using the noapic, nolapic, nodma, nolapic noapic modes..to no resolution, so that must not be whats causing it. Any other suggestions? thanks again.
  18. Im trying to install mandrake 10.1. The install seems to go smoothly, it askes me to remove boot media, i do, and then it reboots. Boot loader comes up...i choose linux, then it starts to load the OS. It does a series of checks and then stops and freezes on "checking root file system" I cannot figure it out and no one online seems to have this problem as this is the second forum ive tried in the past three weeks. My computer is running XP perfectly. I switch out harddrives to install and try to boot linux, so i am not dual booting. Linux is on its own drive and is the only drive in the computer when i use linux. sorry if its confusing. any help would be great. here are my system spec's just in case. amd athlon xp 2600@2.22 Ghz 1.25 GB ddr ram 20 Gig HD Asus a7n266-c mainboard Ati x1300 agp card 500 watt PSU 7 fans Dont think it matters but i was an alienware pc, until i upgraded jus about everything except the mainboard. Please help anyone. Thank you for taking the time to read my chicken scratch.
