  1. Awesome, I want to do some sort of a certification and I was thinking about linux since I am sticking with trying to understand it and get it working and all. I guess for a newb like me it is the amount of research you must do in order to get a proper reading source that helps you. I find this is quite overwhelming for me. Where, with Win, All I really needed to do is go to my local bookstore and depending what os I was using, pick the book relating to what I needed. When I am there for my linux box, I find that I must go through pages and see if the ddocumentation matches what I am looking for, for my box in particular. Some books are general books on the whole jist of what I am trying to understand, others are bibles and really go indepth on the particular subject. I guess with all the different flavors and the branches of the main versions of linux, ie: redhat, slackware, Mandrake, debian, etc ...., It feels a bit discouraging. But just a bit. Once you find the right source, then you are on point and away you go. But back to the certs... I am definately interested in getting one, just in what is still the brain drain. The more I probe on linux the more it intrigues me. But so far from what I gather, be it intentionally sought after or just from pure enjoyment of tinkering with, It seems to open doors for you. With windows I definately feel it has become greatly saturated. Like at my work there must be atleast 5 admins in windows as a pose to just one in linux (one of my supervisors) and her assistant. But either way your comments have given me something to consider and look in to and I completely appreciate it.
  2. well it seems I jumped the gun on this one here. Webmin does work, however I realized that after rebooting it seems to stop working and I get the message page cannot be displayed again. Only thing I can think of is the squirrelmail that I had installed for my users to check their mail. when I installed that I ran through the global config params I had rebooted and voila webmin would not respond until I went back and reran the ./setup.sh script. Can someone tell me why? when I installed I thought it would go in its defaults install location, but instead it installed in /webmin/webmin-1.260 right under root which is kinda convieniant for me but still to have to rerun setup.sh everytime I may have to reboot and/or after a certain amount of time passes and it idles out.... starting to be annoying. The idle issue occurrednot when I was watching a movie so I am monitoring it to see if it will happen again... any info on this situation would be helpful....thnx!
  3. sent them an email, cuz they have a habit of keeping me on hold which racks up my long distant charges. so in the meantime what I did was install my drake box with the same domain name that I had registered at dyndns & with my router I have the feature to update my ip with dyndns's servers. apache does work but eventually I do want to get my krynn.ca to be pointed to my drake box...just not sure if I want drake as a pdb or bdc yet.... when i go to the provider of my domain name they do give me the ability to enter other name servers to point to, but in order to test it out I think I would have to create my own name server and have their server point to it but by going thru a virtual server in my router like I already do for all my other services... seems so damn complicated for such a small thing ...
  4. Update: Well I was able to finally get webmin installed and working. I also did a reinstall of my drake (9.0) & have the following working but not fully configured: Postfix - mail server (will need to install squirrel mail...not need but would like to..) apache - for my personal hosting and who knows what else :-) samba - for my windoze & linux shares ventrilo - My voice server 4 them long distance calls mysql - wanna learn DB and how the whole thing works ftp - well this is self explanatory Pretty much I think that If I can get these all going and learn how to do them with my eyes close I may just be able to actually go and get my certifications in linux (finally move up in the ol job or move on to something way better than being an operator...not that I don't like having 4days off a week) but doing 13 hours shifts in day or night time has finally started to take its toll on me. LOL https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=31636 I think what I will start to tweak out now is the postfix so I can get away from that msn spam mail server (hotmail) Any info you can offer would be greatly appreciated, but also remember that If you got a good site that explains things in lamen terms feel free to post it here... As I stated here or on other posts I am gonna write a lamerz howto on how to get things going for ppl like me that have no idea or few resources to follow up on. And if I can get the apache going I probally will post it there and give yall the props you deserve! ************************************************* So now I am in to the postfix: i went through the webmin and started to look the config options and yeah it does seem to simplify the choices I have to make but I still cannot seem to get mail to be sent in or out of my network from lan to wan or vice versa. As you guys stated I used a dynamic site to direct my traffic to the router and enabled the ports but when I send an email from the lan to wan or vice versa the message never arrives. I only get the email if I send it locally within my lan. any suggestions on what I should be looking for? I asked my buddy who is sub contracted with my isp and he says that for the service I have that I don't have anything blocked. I enabled the ports in my router keeping the defaults and when I tried to call the ISP to verify they kept me on hold forever, so I lost my patience and hung up. I think what kinda throws me off is all the appz or services that I have to configure. sendmail, postfix, fetchmail, etc... Is there a checklist that I can go through that would guide me on what I need to configure. cuz from finding out that there are all these service or appz that deal with the mail server... it is overwhelming...especially if they in turn do the same darn thing.
  5. just wanted to start a chat on the use, practicality and future of Linux and our own personal growth. I am looking at some certifications that are offered and was wondering if anybody has any and if so what kind and where has it lead you in life. There is obviously a higher demand for linux now that it has been shown & proven to be just as good if not better than windows, apple, and the other top systems...but where has it lead you guys n gals in the professional fields?
  6. Kind of a long story but I had downed 9.0 a while back ago and liked it copared to all the other releases of redhat cuz it offered a gui that I understood and when I found out how to start from the prompt I just kept with the learning of it and its commands. Then I had stopped for a while and well windows was all that I was continuosly exposed to so I stuck with that. now that I work in a unix environment and my only way to move up is to learn either HP/UX or linux I decided to go back to the old 9.0 version. I tried to upgrade to 10.1 but when I did the install in vmware I was getting lib errors for unreadable files during the install. Not sure if it was the image i got from linuxiso or if the vmware had caused issues with it but I decided to save myself the trouble and stick with what I got....IF it ain't broke then why fix it.....type of attitude. For the 10.1 version I gave the 2 or 3 cd install to a friend cuz he was interested in learning and atleast I would find out if the error had to do with my gear or if it was othe cd's themselves. I also downed the DVD but got the exact same error so pretty much that is the story why I have stayed with 9.0 for the updates I used the urpmi site but instead of choosing 9.0 as my flavor I chose 9.1 reason being is that when I chose the 9.0, my system would sit there looking for packages that it would never find. but wierd enough when I chose 9.1 ...well I got some things updated and well the system still works fine, so... but I am atleast glad that I found you guys cuz the support you guys give is amazing. wish I had found yall sooner and stuck with my drake those 6 - 7 years ago.
  7. well I decided to try installing the tar.gz file of webmin and got only 1 error. The Perl SSLeay library is not installed. SSL not available. Since I reinstalled my drake I chose the domain name to match that which I registered anc created at the dyndns site. with my laptop I used the browser and entered the box name with the domain name and port...which was also given during the post install and i can log in! Have to tell you guys thanks for the help and all the information you had given me! not sure where I had gone wrong, but I am glad you were able to help me out! As a result I was also able to get my apache open to the internet also instead of just being accessible thru my intranet! Cheers
  8. OK...I reinstalled my drake box ...and found out several things: 1) I am running version 9.0 and not 9.1 as I had orinially thought. 2) I am missing a 3rd CD for installation and was hoping that someone may have it or know where i can go about to get it. Linux Iso has version 9.0 but for ppc. 3) I just love this box...took me exactly 30 mins to reinstall and less than 10 mins to get samba and ventrilo going with 1 reboot!....with windows ...I clocked it at about 40 min and with reboots everytime! Now I tried to do an urpmi webmin & got this msg: To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be installed (19 MB): lsof-4.64-1mdk.i586 perl-Authen-PAM-0.13-3mdk.i586 perl-CGI-2.810-3mdk.noarch perl-Net_SSLeay-1.18-3mdk.i586 webmin-0.990-6mdk.noarch Is this OK? (Y/n) answered Y and then Please insert the medium named "International CD (x86) (cdrom3)" on device [/dev/hdc] Press Enter when ready... Obviously I cannot continue due to me not having the 3rd Install cd so now I am going to install it with the rpm -U webmin-1.260-1.noarch.rpm command... Now I receive this message: [root@linuxbox tester]# rpm -Uvh webmin-1.260-1.noarch.rpm Segmentation fault (core dumped) [root@linuxbox tester]# rpm -U webmin-1.260-1.noarch.rpm Segmentation fault (core dumped) now I am at the point where I am wondering if I should install the tar.gz file or do I need to do an urmpe webmin as described by Gowator?
  9. Perfect exactly what i wanted to make sure of. I already use dyndns without a client because my router has the config available to update their servers automatically. and I am able to have traffic for example directed to my linux box for my ventrilo server. But I will definately use zoneedit for my linux box. So to understand the jist of things by having my linux box on a static internal IP which it already is, by using the client I can get ppl to email me at my domain name (chosen from zoneedit I take it as I did with dyndns) and the mail will be directed to my router which by setting up the virtual server will direct the mail to my linux box that is in my internal network. If got that right then my last question for dns & mail would be: what do I give my linux box as a domain name for the configuring of the mail server. During my install I already gave it the name linuxbox.blah blah.blah.... now if I reg with zone edit (I have to wait till I get home so I don't know the names available....but again based on dyndns then...) would I have to reinstall the linux os and set the name to match that of which I registered at zoneedit? example: domain name given linux box (at install) = linuxbox.myip.ca zoneedit (when registered) = mynewname.ca Would I have to change the linuxbox to linuxbox.mynewname.ca ? Cuz from what I gather I need to have a domain name and not an IP for postfix to work with in order to handle mail coming at the specified domain name... like an email sent to gems@myip.ca would never reach my mail server because the domain name I now have from zoneedit is registered as mynewname.ca, therefore mail that I would have or want received would have to take the address of gems@mynewname.ca Sorry if I may seem to be repeating or talking lamish there...I am a noob & by nature always tries to get as much info and view points from various angles. But also I am going to write a how to manual logging all the steps that I take for myself and my friends and anyone else that is interested in learning as well. Again Thanks for the help!! can't wait to get my box fully running and start on the tweaking. may I ask what it is that you are running on yours?
  10. Hmm looking at the site now and it sounds great. Have you got a mail server too? And is your IP Dynamic too or you do have a reg'd domain name? if so with zoneedit do they also direct mail to your server aswell? If you do then that is perfect! All I would need to do is set up my mail server to work based then on IP. thing is that I do have a valid domain name ...just that the company is taking forever to get back to me on the info I requested. I want to be able to just simply host my own mail server that way I am not stuck to size limitations and such and to host my own web server for myself and possibly others too. Just that I have no way to make sure that my reg'd Dom name comes to my router and then pending on the port specified acccess' the necessary server. So from what I gather at the site, with my domain name krynn.ca I can have it directed to my server FREE of charge? now if that is so then what becomes of my mail server? from what I see and read I need to have a domain name specified which I do but is on an internal lan ip 192.***.***.***.... how do I work around that? would that mean I need to place my drake box in a DMZ zone or do I need to then install an extra nic and have a box specifically set up for mail and as a router? to my Dlink link router? seems like I am jumping a few hurdles more just to get this server going.... either way I got alot of determination and this project needs to get done. Wish I was assimilated a long time ago rather than getting in to it now. but if you got good howto's for a noob such as me then feel free to pass them on. thnx & lates!
  11. Bought myself a domain name (krynn.ca) now i contacted the provider by email and told them that I want to have the name directed to my system at home and need the info on how to do it. Still waiting on their reply. In the meantime: I have both a NT server and a linux server at home setup in a Lan with the same krynn.ca domain. I have a dynamic IP assigned to me by my ISP which has never changed since I registered with them last year. How do I go about to getting a dns working on my Drake box? I want to have the Drake box be the primary PDC and the NT server a bdc. From my reading by getting the dns to work I can then have a mail server created, my apache server working properly by being accessible to the outside world. I do not want to have the Drake box as a dhcp just yet since my Dlink router (DI-524) is already the Lan ip provider. @ the moment I am using Dyndns to furnish myself a name that is then forwarded to my router and from there I setup the port's accessibility according to either the windows or linux box. Pm me if you want a pic of the topology I want to create. Not sure how to go about to get it on here for you to look at cuz of the restrictions here @ work. Synopsis of things I need done are: 1) Apache, works but only internally in my lan. Cannot access it from the wan side. 2) DNS for direction to my box according to port #'s 3) Mail Server - would like to get my webmin working in order to admin my drake box and the postfix configurations to get a mail server going. 4) FTP & DHCP (optional) in case in the future I may want to enable these features. ***NT IIS works fine from both the intranet & internet, but I need to enter a user/pass to access it. Not sure if that is what I really want but for now it works and since it is for just me and my friends for our fishing, camping and various adventures, I don't mind the little security that is placed on it. ***Thanks to Steve Scrimpshire (https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showuser=835) he was able to help me get my ventrilo server to start up every time my Drake box is booted up. (Thnx alot my friend!!) ***samba on my mandrake 9.1 is working so far, because I can access it from my windows side. so the Net interface is there and they do communicate... If I can then get these services working and running fine after a good backup of all the configs I would then be able to upgrade the os and re-administer them and Finally be able to work on learning to tweak them for higher performance and stability.
  12. A buddy of mine gave me a cd with some Audio/video tutorials I will try to find it and get back to you on it.
  13. nice corporate eh? cool will check it out and let you know. Was wondering if I could get you to help me to create that boot disk. I have an earlier version where I couldn't use it because I was having issues with my Nic drivers being added to the parameters so that it could boot up with network support. When I get home I will dig the ol treasure trove of cd appz I got and try to find it, but since you recommend the corp 9 I will see if I can get it and try it out first. Thnx for the info! Cheers! BTW: what part of the UK you in...planning on going there in june to relax and check out the world cup. First time trip so I am totally looking forward to it.
  14. nice thanks for the info. now I just wait to finish work and get back home on my box. Really hoping to get this working properly cuz I want to set up my mail server, apache, samba is partially working fine... need to tweak it to get linux to see my windows shares and printer. amongst a few other things that I want to get away from having windows manage. Will let you know what happens later on today, and thanks again for the help!
  15. I basically copy and pasted the command from their website: rpm -U webmin-1.260-1.noarch.rpm the message it gave me I did not bring with me to work so I cannot let you know until later on this evening when I get home. I then tried the urpmi webmin and it told me that it was already installed &/or updated. Thus I then tried to access it with the browser and it gave me this page cannot be displayed message. seeing that I can install the tgz file, when I used gunzip it told me that the file was not compressed properly. (I should tell you that all this was done through putty and I had to download the file on my NT server to the ftp folder and using putty I ftp the file to my linux box...yeah I am still noob....) I then tried to get the other sources for install from their site, but had problems with the install of Win32::Daemon Perl module. so I abandoned that route. In the end I did some more research on the ftp commands and found out how to somewhat copy multiple files to my linux box. Here are the steps that I took (sorry about all the info, may not be relevant but I just want to make sure that you know what I did): 1) unrared the tar.gz file on my NT box and placed the folder in the ftp directory 2) using putty, ftp'd the files (mget *.* from within the folder) to my linux box under a user's home dir 3) realized that the files got copied to my users d-top instead so I Su root and then ran the ./setup.sh file 4) did the install as it said on the webpage and got that error message "Failed to determine Webmin root from SERVER_ROOT, SCRIPT_FILENAME or the full command line" 5) did a cp *.### all its files to a webmin folder I created in the user's home folder an reran the ./setup.sh file 6) install was fine but message again came up. -tested it out with a maxthon browser and got the message that the page cannot be displayed. -Realized that I don't have the DNS setup yet on my box I went locally to the Linux box and in the gui tried the browser to access it and again got that cannot be displayed message. - tried to access it using the lynx page and was also unable to get it to work... however I do not recall the message given to me. so now I am at the point where I am trying to read up on setting a DNS so that I can get the hostname to function properly. Unforunately I need to contact the provider of my Domain name to get them to direct the name to my router at home.
  16. received this error when I installed webmin: Creating uninstall script /etc/webmin/uninstall.sh .. ..done Changing ownership and permissions .. Chowning /etc/webmin/miniserv.pem ..done Running postinstall scripts .. ----- Failed to determine Webmin root from SERVER_ROOT, SCRIPT_FILENAME or the full command line ----- ..done Attempting to start Webmin mini web server.. Starting Webmin server in /home/teager/test ..done *********************************************************************** Webmin has been installed and started successfully. Use your web browser to go to....... can someone help me out?
  17. Mucho Gracias!! Not only did it work, but you explained it in such a way that any lamer could understand! Now to the next part of my box! :P Mighty Grateful!
  18. Thanks alot. I guess maybe what I did accidentally was have the cd too close to the /usr/ventrilo. For some reason when I spaced them out and restarted the box it started working. I also noticed that when I went to the box to see what would appear on the screen, I saw that it loaded the script up on the tty1 out of the 6. Is this normal for scripts to do? ** I never do any actual work on the box itself, it is always done through secure ssh1*** Reason why I am asking is that I was assuming that it would run in a background like atmosphere, similar to when I boot up and see all the services that are loaded, ie: samba, httpd, nfs, inetd, etc... Either way it is working now. Last question I would like to ask is, what is with the fi? is it like html coding where you insert what you want to be modified or handled by the tags? Thanks again....Just gotta love taking that red pill!
  19. thnx for the reply and the possible help. the script i created has this code: # # This is a self made script to launch ventrilo # It runs in conjuction wuth /etc/inittab to autostart should it be killed or rebooted ## # # cd /usr/ventrilo ./ventrilo_srv I basically called it ventscript.sh (which when I want to run, i go to the dir and type ./ventscript.sh and is runs. I then placed it in the working directory (/usr/ventrilo) until I figured where i could place it ...thinking like windows (start up folder) or anything of the same in my linux box. I then went to the inittab file (/etc/inittab) and added this line at the end: # Run gettys in standard runlevels 1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1 2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2 3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3 4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4 5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5 6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6 r1:2345:respawn:/usr/ventrilo/ventscript.sh When it did not work i left the inittab as is with the modification and then tried to mod the rc.local file: fi elif [ $SECURE_LEVEL -ge 4 ]; then rm -f /etc/issue /etc/issue.net cd /usr/ventrilo . /usr/ventrilo/ventrilo_srv fi Now I am not familiar on how this should have been placed if I needed to create a new section with fi ..my code as above...fi so i decided to leave it as is as you see above. as you can tell i still have the windows train of thought so I think that is my main issue here. I figure that if i can see from a working example that works in my system that I can then replicate it for other things that I would like to do with my box. is there a good place that you could point me to on scripting for noobs. Looking for that red pill to set me free! Again thanks for the help
  20. Noob here that is seeking help with making a script to start a voice server application. I have a ventrilo server installed in my box. I want to write a script that issues this command for the working directory of the application ./ventrilo_srv (/usr/ventrilo). now when I am in the cosole i can start the server by simply issueing the command ( ./ventrilo_srv). I would like to have this application start on boot up after everything else services, daemons, etc and such are done and loaded successfuly. I was reading a post (https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=5084) where it talks about starting program on the boot process. I tried to /etc/rc.local by adding a statement as it said to. but not getting it to work. pretty much i am also new to scripting so i have not completely understood the whole scripting concept and are still basing what i do understand on dos batch writing. However, I was able to create a test script that does launch the server. now my question and problem is related to how to insert the same command(s) in the rc.local script or the inittab to start my server. I would like it if someone was able to just show me how to go about this so that I can properly understand and get the server up and running. by this then I can get a clear, working example that I can then elaborate on or recreate with other applications aswell. if this is not worded correctly feel free to say so and I will give step by step instructions to what I have done. i have mandrake 9.1 installed because I want to understand my box first before I do a fresh install of the newer versions.
  21. Was just wondering what version of Norton Ghost you used to back up your Driva box? thnx
