  1. Thanks for all advises ... I'm glad you answered so soon. Know, all I have to do is wait for the final release of Mandriva 2007 (I don't like betas). PowerPack+ usualy appears in the same time with the simple release ?
  2. If you just want to copy your files between different type of partitions I suggest 2 solutions: 1) Useing Windows: a) install Partition Magic ... it will recognise all amjor partition types, and you can right click on a partition and than "browse", if not, you should have somewhere in the menus a browse option; then just copy and paste them into the windows partition B) as I recall, totalcommander has a plugin for ext filesistems ... maybe raiserfs - I'm not shure 2) Linux: try what the others said ... anyway, at my pc, depending on the USB port I may find my flash stick at /dev/sda or /dev/sdb ...
  3. I use KTorrent ... download the latest version from their site and try it ... it is a little like uTorrent for windows, it is fast (in any case faster than Opera9 at my pc) and knows DHT networks, and of course uses less memory than Azureus ... :P ...
  4. Mandriva 2007 Final will be soon released, so I'm curiouse what do you recommand for a computer that now is haveing mandriva 2006. In my case I have a lot of personal configurations and andless little programs installed, downloaded form the internet, that I'd not like to hunt down again, or even to start and reinstall all of them from cd... Basicly, I would like to have everithing Mandriva 2007 will have + all personaly installed applications & datas from Mandriva 2006. Awaiting your sugestions. Thanks.
  5. I just installed the latest beta for GoogleEarth 4, I use Mandriva 2006.0 free, I have an ATI Radeon 9200 (M9+) 5C63 with the standard drivers from the Mandirva install DVD. I tryed a few 3D (opengl / sdl) games, all worked fine. GoogleEarth 4 Beta instead has a strange problem. The image of Earth is flickering continuesly and I see in the console some messages like: 15.058395: Texture TILE took 10.78ms to create. I have a P3 at 1.1GHZ and 378MB SDRAM, but when googleearth is running, cpu useige is about 60% only and memory is about 200MB. So, everithings look OK, but the image is flickering. I tryed all the possible settings from GE. I don't know what to try next. If I install the linux drivers from ATI do I risk problems with already installed games? Also, I heard that ATI drivers from ATI website are not as good as they should be - at least for linux.
  6. Until yesterday I had kopete 0.12 beta, compiled by myself after a "long war" whith dependencies. Finaly I did it. Yesterday I downloaded Kopete 0.12 final release and ... it doesn't compile. Of course I checked and eventualy reinstalled some packeges required by Kopete 0.12. However, for example, I have the iLBC packeg installed, when I try to compile libjingle it finds it, BUT kopete configure does NOT find it. I even tryed to compile linphone, but it generates some strange errors in gtk-docbook package, and quits after 200 undefined variables - or something like this. Kopete kompiles everithing but, when it reaches the linphone plugin it crashes with an error message [..........] /linphonemediaengine.cc:152: undefined reference to `pcmu8000' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[4]: *** [kopete_jabber.la] Error 1 make[4]: Leaving directory `/mnt/chestii/Downloads/DE_PUS_PE_CD/Kopete_0.12_final/kopete-0.12.0/kopete/protocols/jabber' make[3]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 make[3]: Leaving directory `/mnt/chestii/Downloads/DE_PUS_PE_CD/Kopete_0.12_final/kopete-0.12.0/kopete/protocols/jabber' make[2]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/mnt/chestii/Downloads/DE_PUS_PE_CD/Kopete_0.12_final/kopete-0.12.0/kopete/protocols' make[1]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/mnt/chestii/Downloads/DE_PUS_PE_CD/Kopete_0.12_final/kopete-0.12.0/kopete' make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 I tryed installing it with "make -i -k" but the compiled kopete executable crashes when I want to connect to my accounts. Also I find some strange things: ./configure --prefix .... (as described at kopete home page) does configure, BUT make does configure+make, AND "make install" does configure+make+install again ... Please, if someone managed to compile kopete with libjingle support post a reply with a breef description of the compilation procedure (what to install before, how to configure and compile then kopete) Thank you a lot. 7. I installed cdrecord-ProDVD and know I have full DVD support, I'm able to write DVD-R and DVD+R too. The only little problem is that I must run xcdroast as root from terminal with "-n" option. Even with user options properly set in XCDRoast it does not allow cdrecord.prodvd to write disks of any kind. But as root everithing is perfect. Thanks for all your help.
  8. Installed Graveman ... it is preatty beautifull ... but still unable to write DVD+R disks. :( I already have a XCDRoast version capable of writeing DVD's ... :) ... it is the modified version from Mandrica DVD... Firmware is DL11
  9. I partially solved the problem. It was a combined dbus and dvd disk problem. For those hwo has same problems like me: - original dbus packages was reinstalled, know working fine - there may be some driver issues with this dvd writer. I could successfully burn DVD-R disks only, DVD+R disks can not be written. An ATAPI info in XCDRoast returns only DVD-R write capabilities. Also it is possible that the previously tried DVD-R disk was damaged... - know I can write DVD-R disks. If anyone managed to write with this writer DVD+R disks please tell me. - the K3B => system crash still misteriouse... anyway I'm pleased with XCDRoast with cdrecord-ProDVD will I be able to write DVD+R disks? It is free? Couldn't find any exact description ... a link may be usefull... Thanks
  10. I can not use K3B. It never worked on my system. On hardware detection it crashes the hole system. But XCDRoast works just fine. In Xcdroast I SELECTED the apropiate 4.7GB option before writeing ... Also you may have some right in what you are saying. In fact I think that somehow the Lead-In is written wrong. I will try know to download K3B and install the newest version. Also I updated the "dbus" package and something went wrong becouse it can not start know. Could this be the problem? [DBUS PROBLEM SOLVED] [DVD PROBLEM NOT SOLVED]
  11. I use Mandriva 2006.0 Free DVD edition I have LG-4167B (I think) DVD-+Writer (secondary master) and a Compaq CDROM (primary slave) PC is Compaq Evo 300D (P3 1100Mhz) When I write a CD-R or CD-RW everithing is OK. But, when I write a DVD+R it is written without error messages, but after that when I put it in the DVD drive ... it is reported as blank disk. On Windows the same written disk is empty too. If I start XCDRoast (which I use to write disks on linux - K3B crashes - but this is another issue) it can see the written track. On windows Nero7 also can see that there is a track on the dvd disk. Even it can save it to a .nrg file ... of course the saved file is impossible to be mounted in DaemonTools or similar. On Windows DVD's can be written whitout problems ... so it is not a hardware failiure. Also it may be an incompatibility whit my bios/chipset I think, becouse if in bios "Power Saveing" option is set to disabled no CD's or DVD's can be written, the simtomps are the same. Write=>OK=>imossible to READ. With "Power Saveing" enabled CD's are OK, but DVD's are not. Also I mention that "halt" command doeas a reboot on my system - don't know why. I plan to play with the bios settings and try DVD-R disks too. Till then, please help with any ideeas, tell me what should I check, or if you need any logs/outputs/configs to help write me which one to post here. THANX A LOT.
  12. I tried it. I set up about 4-5 ftp sources for urpmi. The problem is: - I can not find on any update server glibc 2.4 ... only glibc 2.3.x for mandriva - When I try : urpmi ./glibc2.4.xxxx-i386.rpm (downloaded from rpmfind.net) it does something wrong ... 100% CPU ... I've let it "work" for over 40 minutes ... it shows no status ... nothing. If I try the same thing with glibc-common2.4xxxx-i386.rpm urpmi returns a lot of conflicts ... about 1000 lines of strange dependency/conflict errors. Is there any way of installing these classic rpm's without risking the hole system's stability? I experienced very unpleasent things a few years ago with a bad installation/update of glibc and gcc. Please send me some advise.
  13. I downloaded some programes that require glibc 2.4. I also downloaded glibc 2.4 ... rpm and glibc-common ... rpm. When I try to install them it says that it will be in conflict with several other libraries and programs. My question is: IT IS SAFE TO FORCE AN INSTALL REGUARDING THE CONFLICTS? If no, how shoul I proceed to install the new glibc-2.4 ???
  14. Solved the ksysguard applet problem too... But I observed, that, now the CDROM's (ide0 slave hdb) led indicator is blinking fadely ... even if it is no cd inside, when i put a cd inside it mounts very slow 1-2 minutes, and i see again those strange errors, but finaly it mounts and it works ... i think it will never be better then this and I thank you again for your help.
  15. IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you all ... finaly it works ... at least now. I hope it will keep working But, nothing is perfect ... k3b still can't write ... somethig like it can not set the write speed ... but that's not a problem for me, I like the most XCDRoast and that works just fine. The strange thing is, that ... "KSysGuard" applet in the taskbar gave me some .xml file error and ... it is gone ... I can start it, but I can not see any information about CPU or MEMORY. Anyway this is a little sacrifice for the cd devices getting run and work ... Thanks again.
  16. If it is a chipset problem why it is working on Windows? I think ... maybe I'm wrong ... it is a driver problem. I'm going to try to separate the 2 cd devices now. My fstabis: /dev/hda3 / ext3 noatime 1 1 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrw auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,rw 0 0 /dev/hda6 /mnt/win_d ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,rw 0 0 /dev/hda7 /mnt/win_e ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,rw 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 And I'm going to change it this way: /dev/hda3 / ext3 noatime 1 1 /dev/hdb/mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrw auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,rw 0 0 /dev/hda6 /mnt/win_d ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,rw 0 0 /dev/hda7 /mnt/win_e ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,rw 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 Anyway I'm ready to try the "update trick" also. Be right back....
  17. OK, I'll try the update trick tomorrow, and I'll be back with the results ... i hope it will work. For now I just want to specify that I have only one harddisk at ide0 master ... and it will remain there :D On that harddisk I have 3 windows partitions and 2 linux partitions. The first partition is "Windows C" (20GB), the second is "linux /"(19GB), then 1 GB swap, and the other windows partitions.
  18. Maybe I was missunderstood. Originaly my harddisk WAS ide0 master - alone, after changeing cdrom configuration, it REMAINS ide0 master with ide0 slave - cdrom added. So, root device was not changed!!! Only the cd-rom became - or it should - from hdd -> hdb ... correct? Now I'm back at the original config: ide0(hda) = harddisk master, ide1(hdc) dvdrv master and ide1(hdd) cdrom slave. I made some google search for my chipset, and it should be fully supported in kernel 2.6.12 ... but I sow some issues on kernel 2.6.10 regarding the IDE controller. I'm asking you to help in the following issues: one k3b session is impossible to kill even after repeted reboots - my messeges file is GROOOOOOVING BIIIIIIIG wiht all thet hdd error messages. HOW COULD I KILL THET PROCESS??? (these are not working: kill -9 PID, reboot with "init 6", killing it from ksysguard - of course all these as root) if there is a driver issue, or a missing kernel patch ... where can i find the necesary software for my chipset (I looket so far at intel, compaq/hp and kernel.org without any success) My intel chipset, I think, should be something common and obviously it is not very new ... at least a few years old... how it is possible to not have full support for a 2-3 years old chipset??? I was just wondering ...
  19. I tryed it ... I put: ide0 master = harddisk, ide0 slave=cdrom and ide1 master = dvdrw Now, linux does not start ..... after loading the graphical interface it hangs up. The only solution is to reset from the power button. I would like to mention, that I have a WinXP installed also, and there are no problems useing my optical devices. My ide device is: IntelĀ® 82801BA Ultra ATA - 244B I/O controller is: IntelĀ® 82815 - 1130 CDROM is: COMPAQ LTN486S DVDRW is: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B These information is from windows, but linux detects my hardware (at least it did when it was working) exactly the same.
  20. I use Mandriva 2006.0 free DVD and I have the following problem: I have 1 LG DVDRW (4167b) on ide1 master one CDROM - Compaq (something old - 24x I think) on ide1 slave When I put in a dvd in the dvdrw or a cd in the cdrom I can read them without problems. But, if I try to start any kind of disk burning tools (like K3B, XCDRoast, ERoaster etc) all fails at device detection. They just hang up and I can't kill all the processes, which then remain active even after restart. I can not mount any more cd or dvd drives. The only solution to kill the process is to disable ide1 channel from bios, boot linux, enableing again, boot again. Then, I have some strange messages in /var/log/messages: Mar 18 03:31:48 localhost kernel: hdd: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x02) Mar 18 03:32:48 localhost kernel: hdd: lost interrupt Mar 18 03:32:48 localhost kernel: cdrom_pc_intr, write: dev hdd: flags = REQ_STARTED REQ_PC REQ_FAILED REQ_QUIET Mar 18 03:32:48 localhost kernel: sector 0, nr/cnr 0/0 Mar 18 03:32:48 localhost kernel: bio 00000000, biotail 00000000, buffer 00000000, data 00000000, len 0 Mar 18 03:32:48 localhost kernel: cdb: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Mar 18 03:32:48 localhost kernel: hdd: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x02) Mar 18 03:33:48 localhost kernel: hdd: lost interrupt Mar 18 03:33:48 localhost kernel: cdrom_pc_intr, write: dev hdd: flags = REQ_STARTED REQ_PC REQ_FAILED REQ_QUIET Mar 18 03:33:48 localhost kernel: sector 0, nr/cnr 0/0 Mar 18 03:33:48 localhost kernel: bio 00000000, biotail 00000000, buffer 00000000, data 00000000, len 0 Mar 18 03:33:48 localhost kernel: cdb: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Mar 18 03:33:48 localhost kernel: hdd: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x02) Mar 18 03:34:48 localhost kernel: hdd: lost interrupt Mar 18 03:34:48 localhost kernel: cdrom_pc_intr, write: dev hdd: flags = REQ_STARTED REQ_PC REQ_FAILED REQ_QUIET Mar 18 03:34:48 localhost kernel: sector 0, nr/cnr 0/0 Mar 18 03:34:48 localhost kernel: bio 00000000, biotail 00000000, buffer 00000000, data 00000000, len 0 Mar 18 03:34:48 localhost kernel: cdb: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Mar 18 03:34:48 localhost kernel: hdd: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x02) Mar 18 03:35:00 localhost CROND[5395]: (mail) CMD (/usr/bin/python -S /usr/lib/mailman/cron/gate_news) As you can see, the errors appears only on HDD - the CDROM. These messages are the generated every few seconds. Also I observed that the HAL deamon can start without problem, but at shutdown it is shown as FAILD to STOP. What I did sinse now: tryed specifying i/o ports and interrupt as kernel parameter different kernel options suggested all over the internet even use ide-scsi option - which I founf out not to be working with kernel 2.6.12 different bios configurations for cdrom (EnhancedDMA / Max PIO / PIO 0) I'm not new in linux, but this problems seems to be too much for mee. Please help ... any ideeas are welcome. By the way ... I have a Compaq EVO 300D PC with P3@1100MHz, 256+128MB RAM, 160GB HDD, ATI 9250 AGP video card
