  1. Gatos, in my case meaning having the 'km' capture drivers and the 'avview' application compile and run.

I currently have all running under Mdk 9.2 exactly the way I want, but have been known in the past to run a couple of versions of Mdk old just to ensure that my ATI AIW card worked with Mdk.

Hold on there... ! you can CAPTURE VIDEO with a 9.2 box using an ATI AIW card?

    WHICH CARD???

I have an AIW Pro, PCI with 4mb ram.

I can get xawtv to work, so I can SEE video... but I've never been able to CAPTURE it. If you can do this, PLEASE tell me how...

If you can help me get this set up so it captures video footage IN LINUX, I swear I will send you my wife's homemade fudge! (No, this is NOT a joke... I've already shipped a package to England as a thank for for a guy compiling some software for me...)

And by the way, it's amazingly good fudge, too.

    Thanks!

  2. Let me see here...

...I installed Vector Linux on my wife's TP 600, and it *was* a tad tricky to get the sound working. Let me grab hers, and see what it says...

Okay. From the end of her /etc/modules.conf file...

    <snip>

    alias sound-slot-0 sb

    options sound dmabuf=1

    options opl3 io=0x388

    options sb io=0-x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=0 mpu_io=0x388

    <snip>

Okay... so what I actually DID to configure the sound was install and run sndconfig (the old-school Red Hat tool). By trial and error, I selected the SB driver that had AWE64 support.

    Why?

    Because it WORKED.

I know it's not exactly the correct driver that IBM had in mind... but hey, I have great sound. No problem.

Sorry, but I can't help you on the modem. Haven't bothered to set that one up yet.

  3. I'm wondering if anyone has tried doing an upgrade from 9.1 vs fresh install of 9.2. I've always done fresh installs, but hope that some day mandrake will get the upgrade functioning.  I've been using 9.2 on a separatre partition and like it so far, but haven't fully migrated.

Well, I did an UPGRADE from 9.1 to 9.2...

...and to be blunt, I didn't notice any problems at all. In fact, it was just generally faster, and prettier all the way around.

I *did* notice, however, that the shiny new boot screen that people were talking about didn't show up for me. My LILO screen was updated, but when it came to actually booting INTO Linux, it either used the old screens, or simply went all console.

No big deal - I just happened to notice it.

At any rate, I was VERY pleased with my UPGRADE path. I decided, however, that if I was really going to put 9.2 through its paces, I had better do an INSTALL, instead of just an upgrade.

    WOW, what a DIFFERENCE!

Whereas before, I'd tried to use lightweight window managers because I thought that KDE was just too bloated to feel "snappy", I logged into KDE after the INSTALL - and boom, baby! MUCH faster.

I then applied the Texstar updated KDE 3.1.4 rpms, and it was even FASTER. I can actually USE KDE without noticing it. Just because I'm so used to running a light WM, I also configured IceWM... and that's pretty darn snappy, too.

My computer is ALMOST at the "perfect" stage... The programs launch ALMOST immediately after clicking on them.

Anyway, that's my experience in doing the UPGRADE and the INSTALL as well.

  4. Whoo Hoo!

Of course, I cheated. I completely reinstalled Mandrake 9.1, and so I was able to start with a fresh installation.

I think my PROBLEM was that I had tried to add some extra module to get my video capture to work... but when I tried the recompile with a "pure" source, it worked like a charm.

I am now posting from a newly "Duronized" kernel. MUCH faster. :D

Now if I can just figure out how to "duronize" my other apps... :D

    Thanks for your help guys!

  5. Hello, everyone.

Here's my situation: I am running Mandrake 9.1 on a Walmart $199 special. (Microtel 1.1Gz Duron processor, 20G hd, onboard video)

I have installed two after-market items: 1) a Maxtor 160G hd, and 2) my ATI All-in-Wonder Pro PCI 4mb video card which captures video just fine in Windoze.

I have found a lot of software that will allow me to process captured video, and I can even VIEW the TV input using avview or xawtv.

However, I CANNOT, for the life of me, figure out HOW to capture video in Linux. It's driving me crazy, and I really, REALLY do not want to have to dual boot M$ just for ONE thing. It would cause far more problems than it's worth, and I don't want to have to dedicate an entire partition of my HD to do ONE task.

Can anyone on here PLEASE show me how to configure Linux to capture video? I've read everything I can find on the subject, but it assumes a level of Linux competency that I have not yet attained.

My goal: to be able to shoot video with my analog camera, do capture of analog signal and convert to digital format (either AVI or MPEG, I don't care which), import said DV into video editing program, and cut raw footage into a movie.

I'm pretty sure that Cinelerra will allow me to replace a demo version of Adobe Premiere, so I'm not too concerned about the editing... it's the CAPTURE that eludes me.

Well? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. And I wouldn't even mind "RTFM" if I could just have someone point me to the RIGHT manual! :D

    Thanks so much, everyone!

  6. Thanks again for all your help, guys.

By the way, I'm following the tutorial at

and I'm using this page for some pointers

So, what does that MEAN? I'm way lost here...

  7. Hello, everyone. Thanks for reading this post.

I'm trying to recompile my kernel, as per the tutorial mentioned in the FAQ. However, I get to a certain point, and this is the error message I get:

structure has no member named `users'

(it's for a videodev module - I'm trying to enable video capturing in Linux)

Help! I REALLY don't want to go back to Windoze just to capture video!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  8. Hello, everyone.

I know I must have spent an hour looking for SOME kind of user-generated Mandrake Label for 9.1 with no success...

so I made my own. (By the way, this works best on labels with SMALL holes, but larger holes are okay as well.)

Here it is, what do you think?

    mandrake9.1_CD_label_disk1.png

I'd like to know your thoughts...

  9. Do I really miss anything? I've MOH(I bought it when I still only ahd windows, the problem is that shops don't sell games for linux...), but that should run with wine(not tried it, listed on their site)....

I think this is/has been ported to Linux - anyone confirm this? If so - run it natively!

    e-sword

For me, gnomesword is the closest you can get for e-sword. Yeah, I have e-sword for windows too and I think it's really peachy (especially the prayer schedule and stuff) but gnomesword is the best e-sword replacement available for linux. Bibletime is not that level yet.

Now if only gnomesword is ported to gtk2 and have good fonts available. The fonts in gnomesword is yucky imo.

When the English Standard Version is available with any of these programs - I'll look into using it

Just a couple of things about e-Sword and GnomeSword:

I don't know if any of you know this, but e-Sword is a Micros$oft Access program. It uses M$ Jet databases. So... ALL of your Bibles, topics, commentaries, etc... are all JET databases.

And, if you didn't know... you CAN access your JET databases IN Linux with MySQL.

SO... if you have e-Sword set up just the way you like it (as I do), you should be able to port your stuff over to Linux using MySQL - and once you get it INTO Linux, you should be able to export it from MySQL to the format(s) that GnomeSword uses. Instructions for making modules are available from the Sword website.

Having said THAT: if you're using the ESV from NavPress, I think that you might be out of luck, as far as copyright laws go. It would be a small matter to export the actual text itself into one of the formats that GnomeSword can use, but I'm unsure as to the LEGALITY of doing so.

The reason why I'm familiar with this process: I have a number of customized modules for e-Sword, but I'm trying very hard to migrate 100% to Linux. And I've NOT been able to get e-Sword to run under WINE in any of the distros I've used. (If we could just get Rick to post his stuff in raw ZIP format instead of using the M$ installer, I think we'd have a much better chance.)
