  1. Yesterday I installed the new Opera Beta 7.20 B 1.

Nice so far, but I can't get Java (applet) up and running.

    Pulg-ins are doing fine.

With Opera 7.11 everything worked o.k. with Java, after making the changes to the /usr/bin/opera as Cannon describes here in the Tips&Tricks section.

I am using j2re-1.3.1_06-1.mdk.i586.rpm. Works also with Konqueror.

The new Beta has a slightly different shell script where the changes are already made. But it does not work for me.

I would like to stay with the new version because the internal opera ads are somehow disabled and its even faster than ever, like it!

Someone out there tried it? Or any ideas?

  2. Hmmm, maybe I should put an 'avoid this manufacturers hardware' page on my website... ;)

    ......

Anyway, note to self, don't buy the  Jenoptik JD 2100 z3s (aka 'Traveler', aka 'Skanhex'), and tell anyone else to avoid that stuff... :D

... psss, and don't tell that this camera comes with 3x opt. zoom, and incl. everything you need, 149 Euro, and hobbiest like me are making the nicest photos - that's the reason why I don't give it back, sigh.

  3. lol tyme, your translation fits more.

Thanks for asking about the card, but I have no problem using the camera, dual-booting, and would not have a problem with a card reader (its a CF card), but I wanted a reaction from this 'famous' manufacturer of ZEISS lenses, and let them know that they will loose in the (German and European) market if they are not prepared for the millions Linux users the next years.

  4. update on my camera.

After the second email I got a reaction from Jenoptik:

    Hallo,

leider können Sie die Kamera nicht unter Linux betreiben, sie wird nur von Windows Systemen unterstützt.

Mit freundlichen Grüssen / Best regards

Translation: Unfortunately you can't use the camera with Linux, it's only supported by Windows.

I asked about suggestions, workarounds, known issues, other users, standard mass storage protocol ...

Geez, they don't even take the time to give a hint with a card reader. What a custom service.

  5. hoi Darkelve,

lol - sorry I just imagine: the old Linux gurus here on this board reading our thread. Maybe they have a good laugh.

Basically my knowledge of linux is < 0,5.

A digital camera is very new to me too, f.e. my camera only has a card, but no internal storage. I just learned that you got a cam which had so far only internal memory.

Anyway, I got the impression that you are very close to a solution.

Good luck - and let us know how it goes.

    --anna

  6. Darke,

did I get it right, that you had 'no' card in your camera, only your internal 8 MB? If yes, then your 'error' isn't an error, but very understandable: there is no filesystem to read on your non-existant mass storage.

What about trying a card ...

  7. Hoi Dark,

    2. Uh... I don't know...

    3. Well, I think since /dev/sda was created for me, this would be the correct one. Sure I made a sda1 but no difference. I think it's just a copy...

    4. It always says 'I/O error, ...'

    5. No I did not. You can do that? I'll have to check my manual for that, I guess. However, I don't exactly feel comfortable with it. Actually, at boot, the screen offered me to load the 'appropriate tool' (being diskdrake). Forgot to mention that, don't know how it could help though.

    6. Yeah, in the 'other' OS (whose name I will not speak of, cf. LOTR) it gets recognized and I can browse it in the file explorer. That it *does* work in the 'other' OS almost bugs me as much as the fact I can't get it to work.

    * I never tried ' fdisk -l /dev/sda ', isn't this dangerous??

ad 2: yes in the manual, or you see the type of your card written on the card itself (or is it a camera with internal memory only?)

ad 5: yes, i have a menu in my camera (settings) where I can format the card - the manual even said I have to format first before using the camera, afterwards just deleting the pictures is fine

ad 6: (hey in Dutch now): (camera is connected) start - configuratiescherm - systeembeheer - schijfbeheer. There you can see not only your HDD partitions, but also your camera, card 'partition', mine says it's FAT (not FAT32 or whatever).

Maybe you can format your card there too - but I am not sure.

As for the 'fdisk -l' command (in Mandrake), it only lists your partitions, and fdisk -l /dev/sda would show you the partition, if its reachable I suppose.

Well, I know I could buy a card reader but I just don't want to

... and maybe having the next problem that the card reader doesn't work. I don't even know if scsi-generic (sg) is running, which I am told is necessary in the kernel to get the darn camera to work

(writing this in English, it might help other newbies)

  8. Hi Darkelve,

just saw that you too are busy with a camera.

What I can see is you are a few steps further :D :

    - your camera is recognized

    - usb-storage running

    - the /dev/... are created:

    New devfs device: â??/dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/disc

    Old device file: â??/dev/sda

    I never reached this point.

And here some questions, but hey, I am real newbie ... the follwing might be complete nonsense.

The problem seems to be a missing 'filesystem'? or not readable?

    Did you manually create a /mnt/camera ?

Which card has the camera? CF? that would be vfat..

Your problem might be a missing /dev/sda1 ...

    What do you get trying:

    # mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/camera

Did you try to re-format your card (using the camera ...)

Can you identify the filesystem on the card with the other OS?

  9. Gowatar??

Update on my USB - thing. I don't know a person with a card reader, BUT a certain person with a usb scanner - hp scajet 3400C - living in the next room with a win 98 box

Grabbed it, connected it, restart the pc - and tadaaaah - xsane icon appears, made my first scan. OK now I know that the usb ports and hub is working. And isn't Mandrake nice?

I get the feeling that the camera isn't ready for Linux. And that my pc, mandrake and the config is just doing fine.

So I will have a nice communication with the Jenoptik folks in Germany -

Thanks everyone so far for helping me!!!

  10. lsmod - difference, that the line with usb-storage looks now:

    usb-storage            72952   2

And I discovered after plugging in the camera I am getting additional dirs/files:

    /proc/scsi/usb-storage-1/2

    /proc/scsi/usb-storage-0/1

and also some entries in /proc/bus/usb/001 and /002 etc.

-- anna, not yet giving up (I emailed the vendor to get the information, if they use the 'standard' usb mass storage ...)[/code]

  11. ok, I just tried it once again, (hotplugging), now here all

  12. Just saw on MandrakeClub:

Someone with the same camera brand, model, just bought, is having similiar problems. It's in the section 'printing, scanning, photo', his name is Lex van Buijtenen (Netherlands). I can't post there, being not a member ...

Maybe anyone with a membership can grab him and bring him here?

  13. Shot in the dark, ....

it's not supermount, it's not usb or kernel problems...

All you may need to do is do a

mknod [significant node and other data that I don't know]

    ......

Thanks artee, tried it. it had to be

    mknod /dev/sda1 b 8 1

    (not 1 8 B) -

But no luck. Could create them, but trying the mount command, I got (translation...):

/dev/sda1 (or sda) is not a valid block device

(camera was plugged, all modules loades, usb-mass storage running ...)

I guess though the camera gets 'detected' it's somehow not possible to initialize the mass storage - due to some non-standard strings or whatever.

I know that very well - my own mass storage, an embedded one, my brain, is often not initialized too

  14. Anna, Ive been trying to steer clear of that one, obviously its fixable somehow but it might just be quicker to .... (whisper  reinstall)

LOL Stephen. I am almost sure it will work - whether reinstall or fix or waiting til MDK 9.2 release in september. I don't feel comfortable (as a newbie) with kernel upgrade and things like that at the moment, and reinstall? Geez, my system now is so stable and beautiful and all. The only thing is that my partner at home is grinning evil that the camera works fine with the win98 box and my winxp, and its a bit like a competition, you know, because I want to make sure that our next pc (replace of the win98) will be a linux only box.

Thanks for your kind assistance. I am learning a lot. When I am at home this evening I'll care about the 'depmod -a'

  15. Hello Paris,

    1. /sbin/hotplug is already there

    2. /etc/hotplug is already there (many files as usb.agent, usb.rc, usb.usermap and so on, and 3 subdir, one is .../usb with the files usb-storage and usbcam

    3. kernel: 2.4.21-0.13mdk

    4. modules.conf:

    probeall scsi_hostadapter usb-storage ide-scsi

    alias eth0 8139too

    alias sound-slot-0 snd-cmipci

    probeall usb-interface usb-uhci

    alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394

    above snd-cmipci snd-pcm-oss

    5. usbutils - was installed

    ________________

I have to run now - doing some payed work

    Thinking about some more options:

    - bios settings?

    - trying to boot with a knoppix cd and the camera plugged in

    - I had no usb devices when I installed mandrake

    - I only got scsi emu with the cdrw drive, no other scsi things

    - ...

  16. I can see you have usb-storage but its unused.

Actually you have it twice (both unused)

Hi Stephen, I made a stupid mistake copy&paste, so the output of lsmod has actually only one usb-storage. Also I had snipped the vfat, ntfs and so ... to make it more clear, ooh aah. Thank you for being so patiently.

Here the correct output (I snipped the sound thing...):

[edited: don't take the above code seriously, its a copy&paste mistake ...]

If your depmod is correct you should get the usb stuff with insmod usb-storage

sorry stephen, I don't understand, what is depmod?

  18. Good news: I disabled supermount. I should have done that earlier because now I can access faster my hdd- partitions, and the ugly cdrombalalalalala-icons on the desktop are gone :D

Bad news: no luck with the digicam. And here are the results. Hot-plugging the camera, I get

Jul  1 10:40:56 localhost kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:1f.4-1, assigned address 2

    Jul  1 10:40:57 localhost kernel: usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 2, frame# 1512

    Jul  1 11:01:41 localhost /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: ... no modules for USB product 0/0/0

I still don't know if its a problem of the camera (though standard usb mass storage) or a problem of my mdk configuration.

General news: After 6 weeks I saw win xp again on my pc, installing Adobe Photoshop which came with the camera

  19. I justed plugged in a USB Mass storage, hers the automatic entries in my /dev

    [root@shuttle dev]# ls -l sda*

    lr-xr-xr-x    1 root     root           33 Jun  1 12:47 sda -> scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc

    lr-xr-xr-x    1 root     root           34 Jun  1 12:47 sda1 -> scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1

Try using USBVIEW or Kde Control centre to view your USB tree. Mine picks up the USB Mass storage device.

Thanks alot stephen. that's what I was expecting to happen when plugging in the camera. But obv. though the mass storage and the camera gets detected, there it stops and a sda* is not created, i can see this in the output of the log messages. Also, I checked if all the usb and scsi modules are loaded, yes they are.

At the moment I have to get new batteries to go on testing. Found usbview on the cd 1 and installed it ...I'ill post here what will happen disabling supermount.
