  1. Guys..... After lots of ditro that I've tried I installed Fedora Core 5 Test3. Its look like this release in working on my machine and can handle both the on board LAN and the sound card. The only problem is the the mouse is "jumping", meaning when you use it it doesn't move smoothly. I am running a full update with yum hopefully that bug was solved. The official release will be published on March 15 then I will stick with Core 5. As for the SATA support I did not checked it yet. Yum in still running :) Thank you guys.
  2. Thanks... Its possible the Mandriva Powerpack will be able to handle that machine. Is there any different between the free CDs and the powerpack ?
  3. Hello guys.... I am back. So, I've installed the 32bit version and I am still getting the same problems. I was advised by one of the Linux users that had the same problems with one of his machines to try and to install Suse distro. He found that Suse support a variety of drivers. I would like to ask your opinion about Suse. I have a good experience with Novell back in the days that Microsoft did not came yet with NT. But what is the main advantage/disadvantage of Suse. I know this is Mandriva forum, but I would like to hear Mandriva users to be able to compare. I've notice that Suse use 2.6.13 comparing to 2.6.12 that Mandriva is using. Thanks.
  4. Hello guys.... I am laying on the couch in my hotel room, few miles away.... Call me addict, but before I left my home office I tried to install the Mandriva 32bit. I think that the problem still exist there. I will need to check it again, but I am 99% that the problem is still exist there. I've noticed that Fedora Core 5 is about to be released on March 15. It use 2.6.14 kernel. If I will not find a solution I will probably wait for it though I can try the test2. Then I was thinking..... How I can install Linux only. Meaning, I would like to have Linux with KDE, apache and MySQL. I don't see any problem to install KDE and the rest of the list, but can someone guide me how I get to the point that I am able to install it. Basically what I am asking it how to install naked Linux. Is there any source that I can download "naked" Linux with a specific kernel release? Can you recommend about a good guide? Thank you
  5. It might sound silly.... Is it possible to install a distribution upon a specific kernel version ? For example, to install Mandriva upon 2.6.15 kernel. After all if you are using a higher kernel version then all the packages that based on a previous version should work properly, isnt ? If this kind of architecture exist then how I can use it. If its not then I think this is something that need to be consider.
  6. Currently I don't see much choice. I am downloading the Mandriva 2006 32bit. I hope that I will be lucky with it. I will not be able to check it before Wednesday. I have to go for few days. I will report when I will be back.
  7. I will download the 32bit version and will give it a try. I saw the error 6 on the web also, but I did not noticed that its related to the 64 bit. I will try it anyway. I will report. I am downloading it from the public FTP sites. Any recommendation ?
  8. I am about to cry :( I've installed it for the *** time, now using reiserfs as file system and I get the same error. In the log I get error 6 just now with reiserfs instead of ext3. Did you look on the result with /mnt (above) Looks like under /mnt it is mounted. Please your advise.
  9. More information...... When running in failsafe mode, I see some errors regarding the ext3 After the line There is this line with the error: Then few more lines of error regarding different tries to mount it(without options flags & without any flags). I hope that help to understand the problem.
  10. update..... I installed it all form scratch. Before I started the installation I changed the devices order so the HD will be on the Primary First bus and the DVD-RW on the primary Second bus ( I read something about the way Linux 'like' it) The bottom line I get the same kernel panic. However... When I am typing fdisk -l /dev/hda I get all the patitions list which seems ok now: When running the /mnt from the GUI I get after that when running chroot /mnt /sbin/lilo I get Back to the GUI => reboot. loading in save mode and get the same error. What should I do from here.....
  11. I have a Q. I am new to Linux. As suggested I am using the custom partition GUI. I used all the disk space for type ext2. at the end I mount it. When I clicked "Done" I was asked if I would like to continue without a swap partition. I am guessing that I should have that I kind of partition. Should I let the install to create all partition, meaning that I will delete them all or there is a custom recommendation. The IDE drive (this current) is 40GB. I have another SATA 80GB that is not accessible right now. It will be after I will install the driver, which will be possible only after I will have an installed system. Thanks, BIG OOPS. I did not notice for the "Auto Alocate". starting to insall right now :)
  12. Did not do the trick. I have the feeling that I will need to install it again. I saw some stage structure of partitions. I will report ;)
  13. When using the mount option in the GUI I get this: What does it mean? No its a 40GB IDE There is another 80GB Sata that I will need to set its driver once the system will be up and running. Currently the Sata is not been recognized (known issue as I learned so far)
  14. I used the first CD. I clicked the F1 when first loaded and typed "linux rescue" I got a "DOS" menu. I choose the command prompt (or something like that) I got a screen with " Mandrake linux Rescue Disk" I typed fdisk -l /dev/hda and I get In the installtion I did not mark the option to copy the 3 CD to the HD. Ist ok ?
  15. I have finished my first Mandriva 2006 install. After rebooting I get Kernel Panic error (save mode) The error is: "Kernel Panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel " What does it mean?
  16. Ok..... So I've got to the point where I can start to install Mandriva 2006. The mother board is ASUS P5V800 with WD 80GB HD drive. After I choose the language I've been asked to use the driver for the HD I get: "What disk/Ide should I try?" I tried sata_via but it did not work. I tried all the other sata_* but it did not work as well..... I tried "linux noapic" I clicked on F1 when started, I typed "linux noapic". That did not work as well... what should I do ?
  17. I did try it and it doesn't work with the USB receiver. Thank you for your efforts.
  18. OK GUYS...... :) I feel lucky today. The keyboard and the mouse are not responding after the langue choice screen appear... I had the feeling that this is due to the fact the the keyboard/mouse receiver has a single USB plug. Lucky me... I have an old receiver (also Microsoft) that I saved from my old keyboard set. It has a separate PS2 for the keyboard and the mouse. Its working like that..... I cant proceed with the installation because I am waiting for CD2 & CD3 iso files to be downloaded. But as its looks now Mandriva 2006 CD1 iso is working Can someone tell the difference between Mandriva 2006 & Mandriva 10.1. The BIOS was set correctly. I have a strong feeling that its a matter of a driver. But I am a MS guys.... :) Thanks guy ;)
  19. I have a Q. Is it possible that since I am using a wireless combo keyboard/mouse (Microsoft), one USB plug, I am having this troubles. I don't have with me a simple keyboard so I cant test it I just tried Fedora core 4 and the setup halt (have no keyboard access) after the "CD found" screen. I am about to try now Mandriva 2006. I hope that I will have a luck with it Well..... some good news ! I just tried Mandriva 2006 I am getting to the language choice screen but.... no active keyboard. Before that stage the keyboard is well active. What should I do. I have a wireless keyboard. No other keyboard right now here with me. Thanks
  20. No. Under Serial ATA IDE Controller you have 3 options: SATA, RAID & Disabled. Its SATA. I tired with disabled also but I still get the "No CDROM was found" error. Its enabled. I tired it also in disabled mode. No luck. As for the PnP. Its "No" (off). Also tried it in both situation with no luck.
  21. What is the different between Mandriva 2006 & 10.1 I tried to install Mandriva 10.1 (DVD iso) & 10.0 (CD iso) not Mandriva 2006 I prefer to work with Mandriva rather with Fedora even though that the main purpose of this machine is a web server running MySQL with PHP. BTW, I don't think that I mentioned my Chipset. In any case, Its ASUS P5V800-MX with VIA based chipset (8251) using Intel 531 3.0Ghz 64Bit ;)
  22. The DVD-RW is not SATA. I verified it I will try Fedora core 4 (downloading DVD iso now) I realized (http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html) that this version support SATA. The HD is SATA. Any tips with Fedora core 4 ?
  23. The LG DVD-RW is not SATA (does it?). The WD HD is SATA. Where I can get distro with kernel 2.6.14+ ? Does Mandriva has it ?
