  1. Ok, let me get this conversation started. I have installed xfishtank. There appears to be no way of sucessfully stating it. I managed to stumble onto the command 'xscreensaver-demo'. This bought up a window called 'screensaver preferences'. This is not the same window accessible through MCC ('configure screensaver'). The 'configure screensaver' window has NO mention of xfishtank. The 'screensaver preferences' window does list xfishtank. In the Preferences window I configured the xfishtank options, I highted the xfishtank and choose the 'only one screensaver' mode, I previewed the xfishtank screensaver (and it works), and I even found the command line that should start it. BUT, when I leave my pc idle till the screensaver starts, it is not the xfishtank. Any thoughts on this?
  2. In order to figure out how to start xfishtank, which I loaded off my #3 cd, I am trying to run the screensavers that were installed during setup and which normally work fine. Problem is I can't figure out how to run them from consol. Is this possible? Do I still have to wait for a few minutes for them to start? I know where my screensave directory is but I don't know how to read the files. Can I tell from the files what commands are required to start a screensaver? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  3. Yes, MCC is not in my menu anymore. There is no 'configure computer'. I am trying your solution (and it sounds like a real good solution) but it isn't helping. Probably because I don't have the version numbers? Are we talking reinstall of Linux yet?
  4. OK, I just attempted to uninstall those two packages (Mandriva-Doc-Discovery and Mandriva-Doc-Common) with the plan of redownloading them. WOOPS!!! That wiped out my MCC. Is there a way to get them back (Un-uninstalled)?
  5. I've been having a lot of trouble with Easy urpmi, installing rpms and dependency and missing package errors. I've reinstalled Linux and am now proceeding slowely with installing software and updates. I have used the Easy URPMI site to download the 5 package lists and now I want to install a few things. My first download via MCC and the 'ADD' software option is the package named Mandriva-Doc-Discovery which requires Mandriva-Doc-Common as a dependency. When I clicked 'install' the download went fine as far as I could see. When it was done I got a box that stated 'A problem during installation: curl failed: Exited with 28 or signal 0'. I assumed the download was no good but I see that under more applications>documentation I do have Mandriva Linux Discovering Mandriva Linux In English, which is what I wanted. So my question is, What did the error message mean and why, if the installation had a problem, did I get what I was supposed to get.
  6. I was having problems with urpmi and Drakxtools. So I reinstalled Linux (Mandrake 10.1) and then using urpmi, I downloaded option 1) Contrib, 2) Main, 3) Updates, 4) JPackage and 5) PLFFree. I then went to the 'ADD' software option of MCC and checked Drakxtools 10.3-0.64.3.2006mdk. This required Drakxtools-backend and Drakxtools-newt to be downloaded also. So I clicked the install button. When it was done I had a window telling me about the bad signatures which I ignored. Then I got a small 'Installing' window followed by a window which told me that 'There was a problem during installation'. This window was SOOOOOOO big that it extended below the bottom of the screen, thus making the buttons inaccessable. 1) When you have a box that goes past the bottom of the screen how can you get to the buttons? There has to be a way. Resize and move were no able to help. 2) Needless to say I am not interested in learning how to correct that whole huge window full of 'problems' which, if I remember was missing packages. But what I would like to know is, since I was able to install the Drakxtools a couple days ago, what went wrong this time? Am I not updating something properly? Am I confusing my system by loading packages that look interesting and are then causing conflicts? If I have installed my commercial disks (3 of them) and the packages from URPMI(10.1 Community and i586), what else is there that would cause me to not have all the packages nessessary? Anyone got a particularily simple minded website explaining these problems? I have seem many posts about URPMI issues so I know I'm not alone in my confusion. Thanks...
  7. I'm glad I asked. I never even saw the compressed index option. I will try that tomorrow when I do the contrib download. I did all the rest today. Thanks...
  8. Easy URPMI site tells you to perform steps 1-3 but doesn't explain anything about what its all about. I know that when I install Mandrake I should then goto the Easy URPMI site and perform steps 1-3 and put the URL's into my console and then sit back for 7 hours. I assume I am downloading packages that were not included in my cds. But that can't be true either because if I then go to MCC and use the software 'ADD' option, I stll have to wait for any choosen packages to be downloaded. 1) So what is happening when I use the Easy URPMI site? I read something about headers but I don't know what that means. 2) Are headers the titles of packages? 1) If URPMI is downloading headers(titles) then why does it take 7 hours? Sorry if I'm making something simple sound complicated but someone had to ask eventially.
  9. Thanks for that tip. It says I have everything listed. Can't wait till I can know all of those little tips and tricks. Theres so much neat stuff. Well, I just got my cd going and did a home backup. I'm gonna reload my system now and see if things are better. At least loading Linux is one thing I know how to do.
  10. Actually, the MAIN and CONTRIB showed a '100%' status message. The others showed nothing like that. So I do have the MAIN and CONTRIB. I think I'll do a reinstall tomorrow but I have to go buy some new cd's first.
  11. I've already done the URPMI thing. When I did, the first 2 packages, SOURCE CONTRIB and SOURCE MAIN uploaded a bunch of stuff. The other three packages, UPDATE, JPACKAGE and PLF FREE did not upload anything that I could tell. I thought it was because I already had everything. JPACKAGE produced this on my screen... [root@localhost daryl]# urpmi.addmedia jpackage ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/.../media/jpackage with media_info/hdlist.cz added medium jpackage examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.disc 2 Linux Format CD 60b (cdrom2).cz] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.disc 1 Linux Format CD 60a (cdrom1).cz] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.disc 3 Linux Format CD 60c (cdrom3).cz] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.updates.cz] examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.plf-free.cz] computing md5sum of existing source hdlist (or synthesis) examining MD5SUM file examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.jpackage.cz] This is similar to the others that didn't upload anything to me. I tried switching sources but that didn't do anything. What does this mean and what should I do? Thanks...
  12. I go to MCC and try to install draktools I get the follwing message...'Sorry the following packages can't be selected: draktools-10.3-0.64.3.20060mdk.i586(due to unsatisfied perl(gtk2::notification bubble)). Any draktools package I try to install gives a similar message. So I went to the 'updates' feature and get similar messages when I choose 'bug fixes' updates. What all this mean and what can I do about it?
  13. 'test' is an example name. I know that deleting 'test' will not harm other users. Say 'test' downloads programs. 'test' account is then deleted. Aren't his programs still in the system? Aren't there remnants of all his mistakes and goofups still in the system?
  14. A suggestion is to have my personal user account and another account possibly called 'test' which is for experiments, etc. This way when I screw up I can just delete the 'test' account and the trouble goes away and my personal account never sees the damage or glitches, etc. Question...When 'test' is deleted, doesn't this still leave any damage or glitches that accurred in 'etc' and 'usr' when 'test' was experimenting? Or does everything 'owned' by 'test' get zapped along with his 'home' file?
  15. Ok, after I ran the UPMI feature I now am able to find and install Drakxtools. Two questions remain... 1) Now will my system notify me when there are more updates to install or must I go throught the files I would like to update from time to time and redownload them? 2) I had some 'bad signature' errors which I ignored and all worked fine. But one of the 'bad signature' error windows extended below the bottom of my screen so I could now click on the buttons. How to I remedy that. I could not resize to a smaller size.
  16. At the Easy URPMI site I am asked for my version (10.1) but my choices are 10.1 Official and 10.1 Community. I thought it was Community but I don't know. Maybe thats why I get some errors. Any idea what I have? Also, with a AMD Duron 1.2gig processor should I use i586 archs or X86_64?
  17. I your solution above I see no listing of the DOC file. This is what I specificly need. Well, maybe you don't have it installed in your system. Anyway, I did what you said and hear are my results... [daryl@localhost daryl]$ urpmf --name drakxtools drakxtools-backend:drakxtools-backend-10.1-9mdk.i586.rpm drakxtools-newt:drakxtools-newt-10.1-9mdk.i586.rpm drakxtools-ng:drakxtools-ng-0.2-4mdk.noarch.rpm drakxtools:drakxtools-10.3-0.64.3.20060mdk.i586.rpm drakxtools-backend:drakxtools-backend-10.3-0.64.3.20060mdk.i586.rpm drakxtools-http:drakxtools-http-10.3-0.64.3.20060mdk.i586.rpm drakxtools-newt:drakxtools-newt-10.3-0.64.3.20060mdk.i586.rpm drakxtools-backend:drakxtools-backend-10.3-0.64mdk.i586.rpm drakxtools-newt:drakxtools-newt-10.3-0.64mdk.i586.rpm drakxtools:drakxtools-10.3-0.64mdk.i586.rpm drakxtools-http:drakxtools-http-10.3-0.64mdk.i586.rpm drakxtools:drakxtools-10.1-9mdk.i586.rpm ------------------------------------------------------- [daryl@localhost daryl]$ urpmq drakxtools drakxtools|drakxtools|drakxtools ------------------------------------------------------- [daryl@localhost daryl]$ rpm -qa drakxtools drakxtools-10.1-9mdk ------------------------------------------------------- [daryl@localhost daryl]$ urpmi drakxtools bash: urpmi: command not found As you see, I also have no DOC file. Also note the 'urpmi: command not found' message.
  18. In my quest for the missing dependencies which were brought to my attention while trying to install a RPM I came upon some articles about Easy URPMI. I did as the article said and downloaded the stuff by clicking on the dropdown boxes. I then pasted the URLs into my console and hit enter. All went fine except for one site which did not download. I am downloading it now. Here are my questions... 1) Is what I downloaded a library of dependencies that Linux(Mandrake 10.1) needs but did not already have or is this just upgrades to my system? Basically, what is the purpose of Easy URPMI? 2) What are dependencies? Are they files which a particular program require to run? If so, why are they not included in the package? 3) When a dependency is missing, is it a piece of Linux that is missing and should have been there originally or is it a piece of the new package that I am installing and should not have previously been there? 4) Anything else I need to know and probably don't will be appreciated.
  19. I opened 'rpmdrake' and clicked on 'available software', 'install software' and remove software'. I typed in 'drakxtools' and 'mandrake-doc-drakxtools-en-10.1-1mdk.noarch.rpm'. I came up with not one listing. How do I find this package and how do I reinstall it? I can't remove it from my system if I can't find it and I can't install it if I can't find it. Hmmmmm.
  20. Mandrake 10.1 When I click on the help button for software management I get the error message that Drakxtools-Guide.html/ can not be displayed. I can't find it in a package search and on disk 2 I did find Drakxtools-10.1-9mdk.i586.rpm while browsing the disk. Why isn't this loaded and why can't I find it using package search?
