  1. This isn't a linux specific topic since I had the same problem with winblows. Its just that NOW I care enough to ask.

    I connect at 31 k/s usually. I have a 56k/s modem and have rarely connected at 56k/s.

    1) When I'm downloading network monitoring shows that I am receiving an average of 4-6k/s.

Where is the 31k/s that my modem is connected at?

    2) The download shows that it is coming in at no more than 4.2k/s.

Why is this less than what the network monitor shows?

    3) When a download first starts, or when it drops to 0k/s and than increases again, it can shoot up to 10 or 15k/s, but after 5 or 10 seconds it goes back to 4k/s or so.

Since the download can start at 10 or 15k/s why can't it stay that high?

Am I having a malfunction or is this the way things are?

  2. >to check what you've got installed, you can use urpmq:

    >

    urpmq --list

Whats the differance between urpmq --list and rpm -qa ?

Aren't rpms and urpmis the same thing? As I understand it, a urpmi package is just a rpm package with the ability to manage its own installation...or something like that.

  3. 1) As far as connection config goes, I can browse as I always have. No problems.

    2) Ok, I uninstalled digikam.

    3) I changed the /etc/modprobe.conf file as recommended above. Here is my /etc/modprobe.conf file...

    remove snd-emu10k1 /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove snd-emu10k1

    install snd-emu10k1 /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-emu10k1 && { /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; }

    alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1

    install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe uhci-hcd; /bin/true

    alias net-pf-10 offblacklist audio

(What is the reason for a file called /etc/modprobe.conf and another called /etc/modprobe.conf~? What is the tilde thing for?)

    4) I don't know what you mean when you say 'Do you have your system configured with http and ftp proxies?'.

    5) I did a 'urpmi digikam' (the previous digikam installs were through MCC).

I got no error this time.

    6) I ran digikam from terminal. Here is my result...

    [daryl@localhost ~]$ digikam

    QMultiInputContext::changeInputMethod(): index=0, slave=xim

    gp_port_write: Broken pipe

    7) When downloading pics I got the same error as before...

    'Failed to download DCP-0002.jpg'

    Thanks in advance...

  4. I removed my media sources and reinstalled them using the Paris Proxad.net mirror. I them re-urpmi'd digikam and still got this message...'There was a problem during installation: ...retrieving failed: wget failed: exited with 0 or signal 6'.

However, digikam is installed because it is in the multimedia menu. I ran it and selected a picture to download and got this message... 'Failed to download DCP-0002.jpg'.

    Madriva 2006

    Kodak DX3700

I'm really getting discouraged. For all the raving about how wonderful rpms and easy urpmi are, I don't see the advantage if they don't work. Or is it the distro that doesn't work? I know my pc is good. I know many other people have this same problem. I don't see a solution. Theres a flaw somewhere. Is anyone caring?

  5. When you want to change urpmi sources you use easy urpmi. But when you want to change the sources for the package installation through MCC how do you do it? Or does package installation use the same sources as urpmi?

The reason I ask is that I am still getting installation failure messages.

I just downloaded digikam. Got this message...'problem during installation:...Retrieving failed: wget failed: Exited with 0 or signal 6'. But the program was installed because I configured it. But when downloading pics from my camera I got a error that said 'Failed to download file DCP_0002.jpg'

    What to do?

  6. If the simple tactics worked I wouldn't be trying (hopelessly) to install cdfs.

My cds have jpgs on them. No software that I have will even read the disk. They got glitched somehow. When I put them in the cd player, K3B opens on my desktop. Thats as far as I can go. In Winblows, with the trial version of ISOBuster, all the files are read and displayed as thumbnails. But the trial version will not allow saving of the files. I would need to purchase the key to save the files. I was hoping cdfs would be equal to the full version of ISOBuster.

  7. The reason for my interest in CDFS is that I have some cds that were save with Adaptec. They have since been glitched by an audio track mysteriously appearing on each of them. Now the original images on the disk are inaccessible.

    "Aha!!" he says.

Yes, I have a problem. And so far it looks like I'll never figure it out. I have seen quite a few websites on cdfs and I'm not a bit closer to understanding how to install it let alone run it.

    Any thoughts on that?

  8. I did this...

    [root@localhost Download]# rpm -i cdfs-0.5c-1.i686.rpm

    and I got this...

    package cdfs-0.5c-1 is already installed

    Then I did this...

    [root@localhost Download]# rpm -V cdfs-0.5c-1.i686.rpm

    and I got this...

    package cdfs-0.5c-1.i686.rpm is not installed

This is a i686 package. I am running AMD Duron 1.2 gig.

Am I wrong to install a i686 package? Its the only rpm package I could find.

  9. Holy cow!!!

Configure through Konqueror! Never thought of it. I configured through system>config>kde>components>assoc. and that don't work.

I just went and checked the konqueror config and sure enough, theres .smil.

So, I'll reload helix and realplayer and try again.

Tell me if I have this process correct...I install helixplayer and this gives me support for .smil and some others, and then I can install realplayergold and this gives me support for other stuff that isn't supported by helix. Correct?

Do these players open automatically where needed?

  10. Not solve, but acceptable.

I did get my kmail configured by taking the kmailrc file from my old system (10.1) and copying it to 2006. However, I still am not able to operate the configuration of kmail through normal proceedures. The config window freezes up when I hit the accept button.

Anywho, I install Thunderbird and kmail is outa here.

  11. AAAHA!!!

I got .smil stream working. I installed MPlayer then I installed the MPlayer

plug-in. You must use Mozilla with MPlayer. Installed 'em, went to NPR,

clicked real audio stream and it worked. I did have to open my mixer tho and

    crack the volume up.

Down with HelixPlayer!! Down with RealPlayer!! BOOO! BOOO! BOOO!

  12. Solved!!!

I remembered my /home backup from my old 10.1 system. I compared its mailrc file with the one on my current 2006 system...Completely differant. So I rename my present mailrc file to mailrctemp and then copied my old file into my present system. I then fired up kmail and the first thing that happened was that it worked!!!

So, someone needs to find out why, when I install mandriva 2006 I get a disfunctional mailrc file. Has anyone else had this happen? Is that file loaded as is during install or is it created in the install process?

  13. Did you check the permissions of the file you posted?

Yes. Root can read and write. I added myself as user and it made no differance.

And yes, there is no "account" section. You could create it by hand

Would I simply add a line that says 'account 1'? Anything more than that and I would need advice.

(or try deleting it .completely and running kmail again).

I think I'll uninstall kmail and then delete the above file and then reinstall kmail.

  14. I installed RealPlayer10Gold.

When I click on a NPR audio stream (realplayer) I get a box that offers to either save the file (which is a .smil) or to open it with Kaffeine. Clicking Kaffeine goes nowhere.

I went to configure>file associations, and under audio there is not a .smil ext to associate RealPlayer with. I did associate it with a vnd.rn-realaudio and deleted the current Kaffeine association but that must not have been the right extension cause I still get the offer to open the file with Kaffeine.

  15. No precompiled kernel. Would you like installer to download kernel interface from NVidia.

try a 'no' there and let it compile one.

    That did it.

After that step I got a warning about 'driver installation has been altered since initioal installation'. And that almost confused me again. But it said my xf86config-4 file has been altered. So I checked it and sure enough, the xf86config file was altered to show that it was now NVidia ready. Note that I do not have a xf86config-4 file but only a xf86config file. Is this acceptable? If so, I am all set. My glxgears went from about 90 fps to 532 fps.

  16. Do you have a file ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc ?

Pass here its contents (removing your personal details).

    Here is my kmailrc file....
