  1. The version for sale at cheapbytes is the same as the Downlaod version. In fact, that's what you get, the download version on 3 CDR's. hence the site's name "cheapbytes"

Not sure about what is or isn't included int he power pack. All I can say is that I ordered the powerpack of 9.0 and the cheapbytes 9.1, and I haven't misse4d anything from the comercial version.

  2. I think that you're realy cementing my point. As for drivers like nvidia that taint the kernel, who cares?? My nvidia card works great with no ill effects, who gives a flying you know what if my kernel is technicaly tainted??? I certainly don't.

I do see you're point about dvd, but that's realy my point too. Linux is in a precarious place between open source and real life, and sometimes, yes, we do make compromises, but every time we do, we put a nail in the linux coffin.

nvidia is a thumb tach in the linux coffin, but I prybar under the lid for what it adds.

css is a the same way. It's a small consession for a very big gain.

these windows drivers on the other hand, in my opinion gain the linux community as a whole very litle in return for a very big rail-road spike hammered into our coffin. I realize that for selected individuals, it may be a big gain, but as a community, given the huge number of supported net cards and printers, the gain is small.

  3. i like supermount in general but I have found that enableing it is dangerous. By default mandrake uses supermount on all removable media whitch is just fine with me. And the sm setup by the installer always works for me just ducky. The only time I have trouble is when I have configured a drive without supermount and then try to enable it. That always goes badly.

As for why, well that's obvious. I grew up with computers. My Dad bought our first computer brand new, a Packard Bell 386 (no math co-proccessor) 1 meg of ram (an upgrade fromt he standard 512k) a 40MB hard drive (that the salesman didn't want to sell my dad, insisting, "You'll never fill a 40MB drive in a hundred years) and an epson dodtmatrix printer.

Since then I've used a slew of computers, several of whitch I built myself and the linux is the only time I've hed to do anything other than push the litle button on the front of the drive to eject. Maybe for Mac people this isn't such a big deal. Buyt coming from DOS and then windows, the idea of having to unmount a CD to eject it is simply mind boggleing.

  4. note***

The above directions are to restore your functional dual boot. What I would realy reccomend you do is stop dual booting all together. You will learn linux faster and have fewer problems if you "shit or get off the pot" as it were. I know it's scarey to change systems, but in the end, I think the benefits of diving in head first far outway the detractions.

    Good luck again.

  5. Untill recently, I was soemthing of a windows GURU. This sounds like a windows problem, not a boot loader problem. If the XP screan is loading at all, the problem has nothing to do with the boot laoder as windows has a very simple loader, just enough to tell the coputer where the OS is.

The most common cause for this in Windows XP is a bad driver. you see, when windows detects certain types of instability, like what you might get from an incompatible driver, it simply reboots hard. Nice for preventing hardware damage, rotten for practiacality. Here is what I would sugest.

    1. Put in the mandrake CD no.1 and reboot.

    2. At the initial prompt, hit f1for more options

    3. Type in rescue and press enter.

    4. Select restore Windows boot loader.

    5. Once the windows boot loader is restored, reboot the machine.

    6. As the machine continues to boot, repetitively tap f8, this will bring up a menu with several boot optios. Select "Windows XP safe mode"

    7. It will boot with only minimal drivers loaded and your display will look like crap, but you should be able to navigate the OS. Uninstall whatever program you had installed, or use the built in system restoration software to restore to a time when everything worked. If that doesn't do it, find a MS forum and ask for help there.

    8. Assuming you get all that done and windows works again, just re-install the linuix boot loader the same way you restored the windows loader with the mandrake disk and you should be on your way. Good luck.

  6. I know, it's been discussed, I just wanted to start it fresh since 9.2 is here.

I recently convinced a friend of mine to try linux, and while he enjoys the feal of mandrake, he has a REALY hard time figuring out the ins and outs of linux and is constantly dbating weather or not to go back to windows. I could get his comp set up and running smooth, but I just don't have the time to.

What distro do you think is best for a n00b?

    Based on:

    1. ease of set-up/hardware detection

    2. interface (needs current, or at least recent kde)

    3. software instlation. needs to be at least as easy as urpmi, the easier the better.

    4. Idependence from windows, not emulaiton of it.

I know RedHat is supposed to have realy great hardware support above and beyond most distros, and I have found a few glowing reviews of the most recent s.u.se. though they were pretty thin on content. So, what woudl you reccomend for my friend.

  7. THe simplist way o say that data is to create an extra partition on you hard drive large anough to hold it, remmber that if you Bzip2 it, it will REALY shrink in size, then reinstall without killing that partition. Also, if you can get it down to about 2 gig, I can mail you a small harddrive to store it on while you re-install. I'll want some money to cover the shipping, but other than that, consider it a karma boost, not that I believe in karma, I just like to behave as though I did. Let me know.

  8. My opinion on this subject si the same os other people opinion on WineX. With WineX, many people argue that it discourages companies from releaseing native linux ports. I of course think that is a bunch of phooey, because linux is a baby in the gaming world.

However, networking and printing are linux staples. THe vast majority of both classes of devices work natively, but new devices and standards come out all the time, and if linux fails to keep up on these criticle fronts, then linux WILL DIE. I don';t want to see that happen and I certainly think that this is a very bad sign of things to come.

I don't want to emulate windows, I want to kick the crap out of windows.

  9. Nope, sudo referes to su, it's broken by proxy so to speak. Don't stress it guys, I had some other issues so i just re-installed, life is good again.

You nkow, of all the reasons to love linux, I think that is my favorite. I can completely screw up my whole computer, format everything but /home and reinstall EVERYTHING that is realy important in less than an hour. Plus, I have several all of my personaly installed programs on their own partition when possible, so at most I have to redo a couple simlinks, and some require nothing at all like maple9, I installed it under /home and didn't bother linking it to /bin because I'll never want it outside of x. I just put it in my k menu and that doesn't change on a re-install.

  10. No, I don't hve any idea how it happened, but the su command no longer workds. When I try to open a konsole and enter the su command I get this error "bash: /bin/su: Permission denied

    "

How on earth can that happen???

I exited X and logged in as root and I checked as root and the permissions are fine. However, when I start X as root and look at /bin/root, it's a blank file. How do I fix this???

Also, I have tried other things that require root privilages like mandrake control center, and unless I loggout, and log in as root, none of them work. Without su, linux is a pain in the ass, so I could realy use some help.

  11. I've never had troble with over-complicated jumper settings on Western Digital hard Drives. I have with everyother brand, but I love those WD's.

As for the original question, I think you guys are REALY over complicating things. You don't need to know anything about what possition mandrake thinks things are in and you DEFINATELY don't need to look at the fstab.

Assuming we're talking about an IDE/EIDE/ATAPI interface, the cable always has plugs for two devices. THe middle plug is the slave and the end plug is the master. If you only have one drive it should always be the master. Check the label on your drive, some drives have different jumper settings for Master w/slave present and master w/o slave present. If you are adding it to the midle plug of a cable that already has a drive on the end, set the new drive to slave and the one on the end to master w/slave plesent.

  12. If you haven't already bought it, you should check out http://www.newegg.com

A friend of mine just got a 52x36x52x16 CDburner DVD reader combo drive for less than $90 and it has an 8MB buffer!!!!! 8MB is HUGE. It's a samsung and weve used it a couple of times and I mean it is FAST. burning from the hard drive, it actualy averaged about 54 and I saw it spike as high as 65x using k3b. It's VERY fast and no coasters yet.

  13. Well, I'd get your internet straightened out first anyway, priorities man, priorities....

Anyway, if you search google it will take you all of 90 seconds to find the CVS version of Winex compiled and packaged up in am RPM. It lacks the commercial .dll's and some of the niceties, but it's there and it works mostly.

  14. I will try to help. First thing you should know is that there is a LOT of anti-WineX sentiment here, I don't agree with it, but i's here, so watch out.

Anyway, first things first, the winex folder is /home/[you]/Trans_Gaming-Drive or something along those lines. Just open up your home directory and look for a link that says transgaming drive. In there you will find a readme that will answer most of the rest of your questions. AFter you've done that, come on back if you need more help.

  15. open xterm and run

    kppp

should be in the menu though...both kde and gnome. If not it's probably not installed. The pkg is

    kdenetwork-kppp

Best? Easiest for sure and surely best if you use kde and need a gui. Run gnome and don't want to start kdelibs? Use the modemlights applet with wvdial, which you'll have to config. Then use wvdial in the modemlights applet to connect and killall wvdial to disconnect.

I just did a fresh re-install, and it's NOT in the menu by default. You have two ways to put it in the menu.

    1. Add it explicitly. Right click on the k-menu and select menu editor.

    2. same place, but change the menu type to 'all programs' Then everything that was put in by the installer will have alink.

  16. Yes, you should always check for a native linux version first. www.tuxgames.com is a great place to go. Lot's of linux games.

Baring that I think that you would be realy happy with the latest version of WineX. Many peoplehere would slap me in the face for saying so, but wine sucks realy bad. I have found that it is not only difficult to configure but it works for only a tiny number of games. I strongly reccomend that if you want to play windows based games that there is not a port for, that you pay the $15.00 and tget the very easy to install and 'no-set-up required and prepackaged' version of WineX. Of course, you can always use the CVS if you can get it configured.

  17. You know, I just sat here and rambled on about how dumb all this anti Transgaming hype is, but it's not worth posting.

Here is the thing. There is absolutely no way for me to get a copy of the linux tribes that is in any way usable. I'd like to. As it is, I can only play on-line because the "host a gam" function crashes everytime, but I can't.

I think transgaming has done good work, and if they want $15.00 from me to use it, fine. If you don't want to support good programmers that have taken software that was at best, semi-usable and turned it into something that is not only usefull, but will help more people than ever, transition from Windows to linux, then fine, don't support them, but I will.

  18. Okay, first let me say that I'm using a second hand motherboard that was believed to be dead when it was given to me and a 5 year old hard drive, so two of my biggest pieces of hardware are always suspect.

I have recently re-installed mandrake, and just today, I finaly felt that I was done. I had al the software I wanted installed, my new CD burner working flawlessly, I even got Tribes2 working whitch was a HUGE milestone for me. Everything customized but the kernel.

This evening I booted up with the intent of starting a kernel compile, only to find that my system will not boot at all. It gets to the point that says "INIT: version 2.84 booting and then I get the following message. (Or something very much like it)

    Entering run level 5

    INIT:  can not execute /etc/rc.d

INIT: ID "1" responding too fast  Dissableing for 5 minutes

INIT: ID "2" responding too fast  Dissableing for 5 minutes

INIT: ID "3" responding too fast  Dissableing for 5 minutes

INIT: ID "4" responding too fast  Dissableing for 5 minutes

INIT: ID "5" responding too fast  Dissableing for 5 minutes

INIT: ID "6" responding too fast  Dissableing for 5 minutes

This mesage repeats every five minutes indefinately.

Because my hardware 'was' all working great, I removed all of the boot options from /etc/lilo.conf except the default one a couple days ago, so there is no fail safe or non-fb option.

I can still boot my computer with my knoppix CD, but that is only a temporary fix at best.

I reboted many times today without trouble, but I left it off for a couple hours and cam eback after dinner to find a system that would not boot.

I CAN use the recovery console to mount my partitions and everything seems readeable. Also, I tried to reset the bios t the failsafe defaults but it had no effect. Where on earth should I begin???
