  1. On 9.1 I had that prob as a user...you think you're getting the rpm's but there nowhere to be found. Keep in mind that this is with;

-root, having added bvc to the rpm group (that's a joke...never makes a diff)

    -using d4x

So, I imediately became root>ran d4x>and downloaded them again to the same /home/bvc/rpm dir. Took about 5 to 10 sec for d4x to verify the rpm's that were there but that neither root or bvc could see  . This is based on a true story

At the risk of soundling like a complete retard, I have no idea what you are talking about..

I tried entering d4x as root, whitch simply said "command not found" ANd I realy don't want to downlaod anything again. THat's kind of half the problem. I'm on a 56k modem. Just adding a contrib mirror takes an hour, and that's if the first one works. I've been trying for 3 or 4 hours to successfully add a contrib mirror, but they all fail somewhere between 20 and 95% complete. Life is not fun with a modem. :(

  2. Yup, For me it's a lexar 6-in-1 USB 1.1 that looks like a cassette tape. I just stick the cards I want to use in the slot and plug it into my USB. A new hard drive link magicaly apears on my kde desktop just like you would hope it would. Life is good.

NOw if only Ihad good kernel source..... Oh well. Can't have everything.

  3. Well, since I had never used wget before, I didn't realize I needed to specify a destination. As far as I can tell, the file got downloadd to nowhere. I went so far as to log into x as root and 'find files' searfching for all files anywhere in the file system containing the word kernel, and of course, I didn't find it, so now I have all my sources gone, and I wasted 2.5 hours and I still don't have matching kernel and source code. Also, so there swodn't be any confusi0on or conflict, i deleted all of my other kernel and source code packages before wateing my 2.5 hours. I could just scream. I'd like to find the guy at mandrake soft who made the final decision to exclude the kernel source and slap him up side his head.

So, now I have a few problems before I get as far as trying the kernel source again.

The first one is that all of my repositories are gone, including my CD's. Not a big deal to add them, but when I add them, there are no descriptions for any of the packages. How do I restore them the way they were before?

Then, I was also having trouble adding a contrib last night, but there's already a thread about that. And then lastly, does anybody know of another way to get the kernel source?

I can't get 3D-acceleraion from ny video card or anything from my printer without kernel source.

FOrgive me if this all sounded a litle too abrupt, I'm just very frustrated right now. THis is not how I envisioned spending my weekend....

  4. [root@penpen stephen]# rpm -ivf --force --nomd5 --nodigest --nosignature kernel-source-2.4.22-10mdk.i586.rpm

    Preparing packages for installation...

    kernel-source-2.4.22-10mdk

error: unpacking of archive failed: cpio: Bad magic

    [root@penpen stephen]#

That's as far as I got.

  5. I know this is realy strange, but I can not get any alternate kernel or kernel source to install. When i try to install through mandrake controll center, it dissables whatever local media I have saved it to saying the media contains a corrupt file. And when i try to install it from a remote server in urpmi, I get an md5 sum error that won't lett me install. I have tried numerous servers and all of the versions I get from allof them refuse to let me install. when I just double click and use the software installer, it says everythings already installed, whitch it's not. When I use kpackage manager, it simply refuses to open the file. When I use rpm from the command line i get an error that says the file is corrupt.

If this was with one particular file, I would dismiss it and get a new copy. But, i have tried this with several of each 2.4.22 and 2.6.0 source and 2.6.0 binarie from several differnt mirrors and none of them work. I have tried downloading localy and downloading at the computer lab and burning to a disk. None of it works and I have software I NEED that requires the kernel source.

    ANy suggestion?

Also, I did re-install 9.2 to see if ti fixed the problem, and no, it did not. I have tried many other rpms in all possible ways from various places and they all installed fine, except the kernel source and all the 2.6 kernels. What on earth am I doing wrong????????

  6. For years, ever since my first linux attempt with the alph release of Redmond Linux, I have had trouble with USB multi card readers. Even though they have been fully supported by the last several kernels, they have not worked due to distro maker's failure to enable the probing of all LUN's. The default kernel in mandrake 9.2 finaly suports multi-LUN devices, so I don't have to run a custom kernel to use my card reader.

    THank you MandrakeSoft

  7. I'm realy sorry to hear that. Lot's of updates after install, while almost universal, is a pain. I'd offer to help in any way I can, but chances, are, I don't have much to offer ;) Anyway, what are you haveing problems with? It all seems so smooth to me I hate to see other people having problems.

Interestingly enough, I had system freezes much like what you describe when I was using 9.1, but 9.2 seems like a rock on my hardware.

  8. Another thing I forgot to mention, is the boot up screan. Other than looking WAY better, you now have the option of the same verbose boot messages from 9.1 or a nice simple progress bar. For the die-hard linux users, this may be a waste, but for former windows people, we don't want verbose reporting unless we're having a problem that needs trouble shooting. I think this is a plus.

  9. I'm not entirely sure if this is the best forum for this, so if youthink it's not, don't hesitate to move it.

FIrst, let me say that as most of you know, I'm former windows user and I've only been exclusively linux since mandrake 9.0

As for my hardware, I have a GeForce4, a soyo motherboard with an AMD athlon cpu. I also have one of the dreaded LG CDroms.

THe first thing I want to say is to the folks that screamed at the ads in the first release candidate. You are out of your minds. Mandrake is a free os and they chose to ad a couple of non obtrusive and totaly passive ads to the mandrake instalation progress scream. Even windows does this, and that's not ven fre. I had no objections at all.

THe next thing to point out which is actualy the first thing I noticed, is that everything looks more polished, as expected. The global theme has been redisigned slightly and it all looks much more visualy pleasing in my opinion.

As for the installer, I was very happy to see the hard drive partitioning system from 9.0 return. I was never happy with the default one in 9.1

I did notice that many packages which wree installed by default before are no longer installed unless you do it manualy after install. THe first one I noticed was kPPP. Also, fewer CD writing programs were installed and several games were left on the CD's. Nothing important, just different.

On boot-up, I found that everything seemed much smoother and faster than it had in 9.1. Frankly, I'm realy surprized given that this is only a dot release. I'm extremely pleased.

The menu has been altered slightly in several places to make more more sense. As an example, in 9.1 ther were seperat links for the mandrake controll center and KDE controll center. unfortunately, they were labeled, 'Mandrake control center' and 'control center,' not hard to figure out, but an oversight none the less. Now they say, 'Configure your computer' and Configure your desktop' respectively. I think that is an improvement, and other links have had similar usefull changes.

THe next thing I noticed, was the software installer front end to urpmi in the controll center. At first I was dissapointed because it looked exactly the same as the last 2. That was where my disapointment ended. In both of the previous releases, I encountered errors when installing large numbers of packages at once. ANd worse yet, if there was even one error, the installer would think that none of the packages had installed successfully, and it would not install anything after the error. This was a huge pain in the butt. Now there are fewer errors, and they are handled differently. Now everything is installe normaly, and if there is an error with a packages installations, only it and it's dependencies are affected. AFter the other installs complete, the installer gives you meaningful output, something that is lacking from many linux apps, as anyone who has ever had an error while compiling can tell you.

As for my CDrom, I took the advise I got on these forums and upgraded my firmware BEFORE instalation. I had no errors. However, that's just my CDrom, do the same at your own risk.

In conclusion, I think people have the idea of the mandrake release numbers all wrong. What I keep hearing is .0=new release with lots of upgrades and big improvements, .1=some upgrades and bug fixes, .2=just bug fixes but no real changes

    This is all wrong!!!

.0=too much new stuff and buggy as hell

    .1=usable

.2=a realy polished OS with most if not all of the bugs worked out.

Barring the unforseen, I won't upgrade again untill 10.2

  10. Shoot. I realy wanted to upgrede to 9.2 today, so I ditched my LG like I said, but I discovered, much to my schagrin, that my ultra cheap $20.00 CD burner isn't bootable. I tried the CD in my girlfriends laptop and in mandrake 9.1 after bootiong and the disk is fine, but I won't boot on my CDburner.

Any sugestions? I don't have the bread for a CD ROM right now. Maybe a boot floppy? THopugh I wouldn't wknow what to put on it.

  11. Well, that sucks, I guess I'll be waiting alitle longer to install 9.2....
you have one of those CDs?

No, I ordered the download edition on CD from www.cheapbytes.com but it should be here tommorrow or monday.

Does anybody know if it's the installer or the driver? If it's just he installer, I could just dissable that drive for the install and use my burner, then reconnect the LG once I'm done installing.
