I haven't quite followed instructions perfecly, i made the partition with DiskDrake. And the partition is setup correctly, mounted at /lfs. I copied everything from the output of the compiler except

GNU bash, version 2.05a.0(4)-release (i686-pc-linux-gnu)

which had stars around it for decoration.

Thans for the copy -> past link. I'm exwindoze user and Ctrl-C Ctrl-V didn't work. No surprise.

I set the environment properly too.

I've just started my Linux from scratch install (lfs4.1). I've made the file system everything, now to start compiling a basic system. I configure, as the instructions say and then make, refuses to compile, the error is below [error 1]. My host system is MDK9.1. Also is there a way i can copy & paste from Eterm? I had to write the below by hand.

If i ever need an RPM or a dependency like the one you need i go to www.rpmseek.com ans search for files providing 'libGLcore.s0.1' or whatever it may be.

I've got a HP keyboard with 4 shortcutkeys and the standard Play, Stop, next track etc. Also a Volume spinner.

Can i bind these in enlightenment? I tried going into E-Conf and doing it there but that wouldn't work. Can i do anything with them?

I don't have KDE installed.

Whats wrong with Ext2, it's what i'm going to use for my LFS install (or at least what the instructions use).

By the copy/move, always check, was that regarding Ext2?

When i restarted it came up with some eerors about the superblock on /dev/hda7 It gave me a commandline and after looking in my Linux from scratch instructions i found i'd forgotten to 'mke2fs /dev/hda7' so i did that. I did the equivalent 'mkswap /dev/hda6' for my swap partition and it worked. I expected that DiskDrake would have done this for me. All works now

Hey just then i clicked mount in diskdrake out of frustration and it mounted, i'll restart to see if it mounts then!

I've done some formatting and things to prepare for my Linux From Scratch install. My hard drive is now:

| Windows Fat32 2.8gb | Linux Ext3 2gb | Swap 199mb | Linux Ext2 /lfs 967mb |

The swap still won't mount at startup. When i'm in diskdrake and i click mount it won't mount. No errors or anything, just won't mount. My LFS partition is HDA7, swap is HDA6, root HDA5 and Windows HDA1.

What the commandline command to mount a swap partition?

It might give an error or something

That worked. I've now got my hard drive as follows:

A few days ago I shrunk my swap partition a bit. Fom about 360mb to 200mb with DiskDrake in MCC. I've just noticed that on startup of Linux it says:

Activating Swap partition: Swapon /dev/hda6/: invalid argument

Everything is working fine, haven't been having problems otherwise. I have 160mb RAM and i use Enlightenment. I don't use any KDE applications.

I want to resize my windows partition so i can make space for a Linux From Scratch install. But DiskDrak in MCC and Partition Magic both refuse to resize it because it supposedly contains errors. These errors are probably fixable in M$ Scandisk but i have been told that Scandisk can stuff up my Linux Partition.

There's my problem. I thought of formatting my Windows partition to be blank and then resizing it and install Windows again. Obviously not so easy.

There's my conundrum. What can i do?

where do i back it up to?? i don't have a CD burner or network connection.

Is there a way i can run m$ scandisk to fix the problems without it stuffing Linux?? Is there an alternative program?

I can boot from the MDK CD and restore it there.

You might want to know why i still need Windows. My father wants windows on it so he can still use it if needed. I can't persuade him otherwise. Also my brothers want to use it for homework.

I have no choice. I'm just resizing the partition so i can have space to make another partition for a Linux From Scratch install. My hard drive is tiny, about 6gb. I survive easily

Ok, i know i'm very offtopic here, but there's not really anywhere suitable for my post. Offtopic maybe but that's a bit of a chill out, relax/flame zone.

I need to format my windows partition (FAT32), resize it and reinstall windows on the shrunk partition (it'll be the first on the drive).

I need to do this because there are some problems on my windows partition (apart from the presence of windows) and it won't resize. DrakDisk( i think it's called) in MCC and Partition magic both refuse.

M$ Scandisk might fix the problems but it also supposedly has habits of damaging linux partitions.

Are there any precautions i need to take??

I don't want to lose my Linux MDK 9.1 partition or anything on it.

After Unmounting, Formatting, Resizing, Formatting my Windows Partition (FAT32) are there any precautions or extra steps that need to be taken with the windows install??

I'm going to be starting a Linux From Scratch install soon. For a while i'll be running LFS and Mandrake alongside. Do need to make another swap partition for LFS or will it use my existing one ?

about a quarter than a year ago when i first let linux grace my box i had a terrible time. It tok me 3 installs to get a good system.

The first was 8.2 and i lost it, gone, wouldn't boot, still have no idea.

I then got RedHat. Install stuffed. Tried again, install stuffed and stuffed everything, lost my winblow partition. So far i'd lost everything on my drive. Thank god i backed up. Then i went to 9.0. It installed, the screen was a little warped, i tried getting my Winmodem to work. Never got it working. The other day when i opened my PC up i found it was ISA, not the PCI i thought. Now on cable internet. After a few weeks i botched my 9.0 install. I tried to install glibc2.3, If forced it (stupid, i know), couldn't repair it. So i installed 9.0 again and a few weeks later i upgraded to 9.1. Havven't had a problem since.

I now use Enlightenment, Mozilla, Evolution, Nautilus, Abiword, XMMS, Eterm, GAIM, Glimmer, joe, gtk-gnutella and Xine. I'm starting a LFS install next week. 9.1 aint that bad

I think it would be important to get the internet working before we go into the firewall. It'd make things a bit easier

I get that DM error sometimes, it just happens sometimes, it's probably not the source of the problem. What happens? does the screen go blank, does it keep the graphical command line? does it seem to freeze, is there no response?

The modem is a Motorola Surfboard, US Robotics Hub/switch not sure and have no idea about the firewall.

How would he go about using this from a clean MDK9 install

I doubt this is the problem with your internet but when i first tried my to get my cable interneet working, it simply wouldn't. I eventually found out i'd firewalled myself in!! I think my firewall was on default settings too.

To check it go to MCC -> Security -> Firewall,

turn it off completely and try again

Yep, i'll help. i've been wanting to do this sorta thing for a while.

Often i'll be using my computer and i'll have XMMS open while i'm chatting on GAIM. Gaim uses sound to notify me of a message. But it can't use sound it i'm already using the sound. Is there any way more than 1 app can output sound??
