  1. I recently purchased an Acer Aspire 5100-5022 notebook with the AMD Turion 64x2 processor and ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 video chipset, and am looking for a Linux distro that will run on that machine. Will Mandriva 2007 run on this machine? Does Mandrive 2007 come with the drivers for the ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 chipset, or will I have to download and install them from somewhere? I've used Mandriva in the past, and loved it, and want to dual boot the new notebook with XP Media Edition and a Linux distro, preferrably Mandriva if possible.

  2. I choose an installation as my main one, and maintain the one bootloader through the main. For me, it's Mandriva. So, I suggest formatting the windows partition, installing whatever distro, and then not installing the boot loader. Next, boot with the first Mandriva cd, hit F1, type "rescue" and choose to reinstall the bootloader to the mbr. It will detect both distros, and Mandriva will contain the bootloader file for edits.

Thanks! I'll give this a try!

  3. I am presently dual-booting WindowsXP and a Linux distro. Can I remove WindowsXP from its partition and install another Linux Distro in its place, and if so, will that distro detect the Linux on the other partition and set up the boot menu accordingly?

  4. im kinda new to linux, but i have some basic knowlage,

anyway till now ive been using rpm's to install things, but now im stuck with a tarball [is that the correct use of that term?] and i cant get it to work, i un-tar the file, but then i cant seem to install it.

i read the faq and i re d/led the file and followed the steps from the beginning, but i cant get that ./configure to work, i "cd" the folder and type, "./configure" and it says the there is no such file or directory, then [and i assume it because of ./configure not working] "make" and "make install" dont work ether

    any help?

    [im using mandriva 2006 rc2]

Did you read the "README" file after untarring? The "README" file contains installation instructions. Not all tarballs require ./configure, make, make install. Some just require you to ./filename or do a sh filename .sh to run the application.

If I'm missing something here, someone please go ahead and elaborate, as it is very late and I am sleepy and may not be explaining this as well as I should.

  5. I am using Mandriva 2006 PowerPak edition and am wanting to upgrade KDE to KDE 3.5. How do I do this? I've upgraded GNOME to 2.12 successfully, but not sure how to upgrade KDE to 3.5.
