  1. I have a sound blaster live 5.1 which has been problematic since I started using Mandrake with version 7.1. I have searched and filed bug reports with mandrake and KDE with no relief. There are bug reports from other users having the same problem. Here is what I know. for me, this error only occurs when starting KDE. It never happens when I'm using Gnome. The only way I have found to 'fix' the problem is a reboot. I have a laptop that I have been installing Linux on since 7.1 as well. It has a no name sound chip and it works flawlessly. Almost all of the bug reports are coming from other creative/sound blaster users. This problem used to be an occasional headache for me before 10CE. Sound now breaks everytime on the second login after a reboot. ie I log in, log out, and try to log in again. I'm currently running 10 official with the default kernel. Alsa is the default sound system.

This is the message I receive when logging in...

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Sound server informational message:

Error while initializing the sound driver:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Permission denied)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

  2. Need more information!

What type of mouse -- USB, PS2, etc?

    Desktop or laptop?

What version of Mandrake are you using?

Do you know what kernel you are using?

    Thanks

    Jeff

  3. Hi everyone,

I have 10OE installed on my Sony Vaio pcg-fx300p notebook. I'm running the 2.6 kernel. My usb mouse does not work unless I enable apic. However, with apic enabled, all attempts to login using kdm, gdm, etc die a horrible death with this message in .xsession-errors.

    /etc/X11/xinit/fixkeyboard: Permission Denied

    /etc/X11/xinit/XIM: Permission Denied

I haven't tried using the 2.4 kernel yet, and I don't really want to if I can avoid it.

    Jeff

  4. I haven't looked at this thread in a while.  There's actualy a much simpler solution.

The 2.6 kernel that comes ith mandrake 10.0ce is version 2.6.3-4mdk.  But you can get version 2.6.3-7mdk from the update mirrors.  That kernel fixed all of my kernel related problems.  The source code is also on the mirors, though you have to download and install it manualy.

there may actualy be something newer that 7mdk by now, but 7 works

I have the 2.6.3-7 kernel installed and usb still doesn't work after a reboot.

  5. If you can figure this problem out, please post your answer on this thread. I have a sound blaster live 5.1 which has been giving me the same error response that you received. I have been having this problem since I started using Mandrake with version 7.1. I have searched and filed bug reports with mandrake and KDE with no relief.
