  1. ok thanks for the help one question are there torrent downloaders the I should stay away from?
  2. When a torrent file is finish downloading, does it check the sum like MD5? Is there a good torrent downloading software for linux?
  3. ok I'm just going to do my linux education and try to work it out from there but thanks every one for the help
  4. well for the newer computer has a 2.4 pentium 4 with 512MB RAM, and it's not for games as I said before so my radion 9000 pro 128 MB ram Card doesn't matter. I though when you have 1.5X for swap for ram it's only for windows because it's such a resource hog. I doubt since I am using it for person server (ei. learning purpose) it would not matter that it is not a big swap file since I have 512 MB RAM. When I was in the install process there was only auto or custom size to create the file structure. How do I change the other stuff that you mention and what are they for? I have training video's for Linux and SQL. For linux do you think I should try to watch them eventhough I do not have linux running properly or should I get linux running on my other computer then try as I learn? As for SQL I installed them on my present computer. I don't seem to beable to acess them. Could it be because it's the basic's on mandrake and the video has a full version of SQL? Or I just am too new to linux know where to look for it on the hard drive?
  5. I think I might have a hardware problem because I installed on another computer with the same hard drive, and it works to a degree with a 1.6GB HD. So I don't know what problem I could have since I had Windows Me running no problem. Right now I am playing with SuSE 9.0 Live. I notice that I really need lots of hard drive space since KDE and Gnome takes lots of HD space. when linux creates it's file structure does it have to be cut into 3 partitions, hda #, swap, hda #(I forget what number), in the size that it defaulted to? When I let linux configure it self I get 650~700 mb on my 1.6 hard drive, can I adjust it so I can get more for OpenOffice? I am trying to fit every thing I need for seting up a server and web page design stuff. (I'm cheating with OpenOffice because I am being lazy). Do you think it's possible?
  6. ever since I created a proper file system with the mandrake CD my SuSE Live 9.0 CD started to work. It runs extreamly slow because I have no choice in but to run KDE. I wonder if my copy of the CD is bad again?
  7. After many days away from the computer I remade the linux CD and verified that they were good downloads. I started to burn the CD and set the burning speed to the lowest possible speed 8X. I started the computer up and began to load the CD past what I was able to do. So yes my CD was crap now I am wondering why is it frezzing up now.Could it be the same problem? after mandrake ask what CD's to install it frezzes up Saying looking for advailable packages. I left the computer running over night since I didn't know how long would it take and well it's still stuck at the screen. could it be my crapy buring again or hardware problem???
  8. unfortunatly I can not burn any slower due to my burning software 4X is the slowest I can go. I was smart about burning my linux CD at least as for checking the md5 sums I didn't really understand.
  9. well from what I learded is that if in the event that I had to check the file before I burned, I did not do. That I never understood what this was so I am going to do some testing to tell you people what the out come is. Either 1 I am going to have to use my other computer or I am going to have to redownload and burn the copy's again to find out my problem.
  10. Damn I have to say trying to use linux has really made me have to know my computer stuff. Trying to out geek the geeks. Unfortunatly I am knormaly so tired that I can't think well enough to make sure I am doing things proberly. To comunicate to linux users can be dificult due to the way little things are done but I must say over all it's really made me learn things that I don't ever think I could in the class room. Which I really need to do because I am starting a busness with someone. Some of it is online web hosting. He really want's to have our own server so to cut over head I though linux was the way. Can anyone give me tips before I install mandrake are there things I should know about doing this?
  11. I want to make sure if I got this right. when you do a check md5 sum you are checking your ISO download. NOT the burned CD or DVD right? I have 48X burner but for improtant things like this I burn a 8X so I doubt I did a bad job at burning.
  12. I considered that but I don't know how to do that?
  13. ok thank you I have a very paticular use for linux and does not need much space for the use.
  14. I am trying to be a new user. I was wondering what is the minimum hard drive size I can have to install and run Mandrake? I have a 1.6 hardrive and was wondering if I don't have enough space that I could find a linux that can run in a GUI interface. I am the same person who has been writing about Pentium I topic in the Instalation section. [moved from Hardware by arctic]
  15. if no one can help me on this. how safe and what do I have to worrie about when I dual boot with 2 hard drive with my old Maxtor? Remember I never really used linux before so I don't understand how linux would show me what hard drive is what and I don't want to lose my windows yet
  16. Ok to help you people know where I get stuck. Forget about where I was getting stuck before. I don't know anyone knows but I found a web site that shows pictures of the install process and I an stuck afew seconds after the Press <F1> or <enter>. http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_mandrake_10_2 if you check out the web site it's the very first one. then when you see the second, I have never see it during install. It never makes it to that screen.
  17. To answer you question yes the bios shows the model name of the Hard drive. The bios knows I have 64MB of ram I do have the 150MH processor but no brand name. If I change from auto detect to user for the hard drive I get size 1674 cylinders 3244 head 16 sector 63. That is what is on the top of the harddrive. I googled the hard drive model number and only one web site said it was a 1.6 GB drive for some reason. I am guessing that I was wrong about the size about the drive "maxtor 71670ap". I am at a loss about my hard drive problem now(ex. can mandrake fit on a 1.6 GB drive?) If you can't tell by now I guess you can call me Window Washed (brain washed) for most of my life from windows 3.1 to XP PRO I have used them all (except 64 bit versions). This headach is reminding me why I never used Linux. Most products I have bought other than my computer I am using right now have been cheap, no name parts. Mandrake looked like crap since I could not find the right drivers for the videocard. That is when I started and stopped due to non main stream products. Thank you Crash Damage for clearing up the matter about formatting. I only understood from a MS point of view. I am still stuck on why I can't install on my old computer?
  18. Iguess I'm stuck on this one huh?
  19. Ok as for the history lesson I don't remember much computer stuff of that time. But to tell you the truth I have a 150 Mh processor. With out taking off the heat sink I think it's a Cyrix, and not a true Pentuim. As for present day problem with linux and this computer I tried stuff out. Does anyone know what a low level format is? If I am mistaken it's the same as a factory format. I think the problem is HD related and linux will run no problem, if I solve the HD problem first. I said it is a 2.5 but I belive it is truly a 4GB HD. most operating software I know are not able to do a low level format. the bios shows the model name and number. I could change the manual setting for the cylinders and stuff but it's still the same. I think when mandrake tries to format the HD. It sees the full size not the size that is still good. So far I get the same results unless I go into advance mode. Is there a way to fix my HD or can I trick linux to thinking that I have 2.5 GB? oh ya I tried the text version of the install too same results! since this has become a hardware problem should I be asking in the hardware forum???
  20. I think the hdc was hda I was a cross the room when I tried to type it out. I think I toasted the HD long time ago when I tried installing linux and was formating the drive. If this is the same drive half way through the format I think I had power loss and was not done properly is there a way to recover the missing part of the HD or am I at a loss I tried to do a low level format but I don't think it worked unless someone knows what is the best what to do it?
  21. To get some of you people up to date I'm using this Pentium I I think 133MH computer with 64 MB of ram 2.5 GB harddrive. When this computer was put together there was no such thing as PC 100 is was SIMM or DIMM that was it. I am using this computer to learn how to make a server and to run advance webpage design (SQL, PHP, etc...). Would it be eaiser to install a non GUI interface for this purpose?
  22. OK From when you start your computer up and Mandrake ask you to press "F1" or "Enter" to install with in seconds I get a "fatal error giving hand to second stage." When I press <ALT-F3> I get this message *Total Memory: 64 Mbytes *Warning, ramdisk is not possible due to low mem! *copy_file: /etc/resolv.conf -> /sysroot/etc/resolv.conf * /etc/resolv.conf : No such file or directory *copy_file: /modules/modules.dep -> /sysroot/modules/modules.dep *pivot_rooting *unsetting automatic If I press <ATL-F4> I get Buffer I/O error on divice hdc, logical block 339533 attempt to access beyond end of device hdc : rw=0, want 1357640, limit 443332 is my hard drive bad or something? or is there not enough space? What a headach to learn Linux! (or I need better parts lol)
  23. I have Mandrake 10.1 with a pentium I I think 133MH proc with 64 MB and I think 2.5 GB Harddrive. During my instalation I get a funny error and have to reboot. So I checked out and found out that I don't have enought vram. For 10.1 would I not have enought space?
  24. I am guessing that SuSE 9.0 has the old kernal like 2.4 then because I tried to install that version and it was frozen after the user prompt popped up.
  25. should I try debian or for a newbie would it be too hard? I understand debian is more stable but more dificult to install for a newbie, is it true?
