Oh, I forgot to comment on vmware :)
While I like vmware-server (free) still not open free :)
But if Fedora included the ability to install vmware like arch/gentoo and maybe some others, then there would be no need for rh to work on xen and openvz.
-
Just to add, I have old mp3's to, but the majority of my stuff has been ripped to ogg now.
Like I said, all that stuff is easy to get, the point of Fedora is to have a truly FREE OS and I think that is one of the greatest parts, besides its an awesome distro but the FREE part is cool B)
In other news, there are portable ogg players now that you can plug into your car, take for a walk or whatever else you want to do :)
Yes, I have an ipod cause I bought it before those players were out.

Maybe you won't like some other things about Fedora, say that one:
http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=14009
Let's assume that one is nothing more than a mistake, but...
At my Arch Linux things are "a tiny bit" easier...
pacman -S nvidia flashplugin j2re win32codecs
...will bring all the above non-GPL stuff and install it in a snap, taking care of all dependencies.
More than that:
aurbuild -b vmware-workstation
will bring, build+install (always dependencies included) a commercial application, in a manner tailor made for the OS (but no, it won't give you a free licence as well... sorry for that). If you are short of money, what about
"aurbuild -b vmware-player" for a free version of it...
I could go on and on, but you get the point...
With your arch things are easier? Running closed source progams is real hot, you should be proud of how cool it is.
Yes, I'm on the mailing list and I'm in the thread that was started, it was a mistake. :) However, I almost like it, cause I'm a tad bit OSS twisted....
However, many people seem to focus on what Fedora WONT ship, and not the WHY.
i386 version of firefox for x86_64 user, nope, they wont "hand" one out, is it easy to get, sure.is
nvidia/ati "closed" source drivers, nope, is it easy to get, sure.
mp3 support, nope, is it easy to get, sure
dvd support for questionable codec, nope is it easy to get, sure.
The thing many people seem to forget, with out a company like Red Hat, your OSS software you enjoy so much would be CRAP.
/me gets on his flame suit and jumps on his soap box.
Many people in the Linux community, really have no CLUE what OSS means and who has been fighting to make it all possible and to give you the crap you so love to run while telling m$ and apple to stick it. You really have NO idea who is doing the work and why the work is being done.
This has IRRITATED me beyond belief over the years, every freaking realease, people BITCH about mp3/dvd/closed this, closed that. Seriously, get over it, fedora/rh as long as we know it will NEVER release stuff like this because of what it stands for. If your so damn hot, you know it is easy and painless to install the crap you bitch about and if you don't want to use a 3rd party repo, than the folks who bitch the most act like they know what they are doing, if you know that much, you know the same stuff you complain about, takes less than 5 minutes on SLOW processors to build, so work it out, deal?
You have any clue how blind you are? If company's like RH(FC) don't say screw you macromedia/mp3/ati/nvidia/ nobody will make FREE OSS software. Same thing with transgaming(cedega) "BIg game company will not take the time to develope/port when the know someone else already has a chessy solution" either will Macromedia/Nvidia/Ati and blah blah blah.
Seriously, you can wank on RH all you want, but good luck with your Linux desktop, your kernel, your gcc, your glibc, your blah blah and blah, I hate to say one company has had a big influence on the things you enjoy so much, but it has and I think they deserve a lot of RESPECT of not being like the "others".
Whats funnier than that, is Arjan Van De Ven's response........and several other developers, seriously, you take OSNEWS/ /. as reall worth while news? Its all about response from the readers that have no clue why they are responding.
/me pulls the suit off and ready for the whipping.
And they wonder why I shouldn't be part of the marketing team........
anyway, I've pissed off and ofended most people here from ever using fedora, but hey to be honest, it was a tad bit fun... :)

Anyone can tell how much RAM Fedora Core takes up after startup?
I mostly like what I read about it and KDE can be installed (I'm a KDE guy), but I don't want to put anything sluggish on my system.
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-note...ch-specific-x86
7.2.1.1.1. Memory RequirementsThis section lists the memory required to install Fedora Core 5 test2.
This list is for 32-bit x86 systems:
*
Minimum for text-mode: 64MB
*
Minimum for graphical: 192MB
*
Recommended for graphical: 256MB
As far as how much does it use during startup is a bit hard to tell, the kernel uses what is there so whatever you got, as long as its the Minimum, Recommended being better and whole lot more is always nicer :)
KDE 3.5.1 will be in FC5
-
But not all systems require you to open them with a text editor.
True. And more than that, under (say) Arch Linux, system management with nano or MC is so darn easy, that in the beginning you are almost sure you have fecked something up bigtime! :P
I always thought vi was for true system management, and nano was some weird incomplete after thought? :P
/me puts on his flamesuit cause after all he was only joking.......

if possible I'd like to stay with a rpm based distro (don't shoot me!!)
I wont shoot you for using rpm's (signature) :)
The livecd is still a work in progress, so keep in mind at this point, it isn't a final product and shouldn't be fully considered what Fedora will be like.
You can try this too (which is a build of fc5-t3ish)
http://alphonsebrown.no-ip.org/free/fedora-livecd/
http://clunixchit.blogspot.com/2006/03/liv...ep-by-step.html
I should have mentioned that Kadischi is a tool for creating a livecd.
-
Just so everyone knows, all the Linux/solar/*bsd distros I've tried, they all seem to have a terminal and config files ;)
-
Thats odd, mine works but I'm on rawhide but could have sworn in fc4 the samething provides libstdc++.so.5
Other than yum provides you can do things like
yum list *\libstdc\*
which means anything before and after, so like
compat-libstdc++-33
Would pop up since something is before libstdc and something is after.
yum list | grep libstdc
Anything with libstdc before/after/middle were ever.
yum list libstdc\*
You guessed it, anything after, I'll let you figure out how to do before :)
This is also good to read through
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/yum/
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/yum/sn-searching-packages.html
-
I'm sorry if this has been mentioned here before, but is there a good Fedora Core based live cd so that I can check out the general Fedora feel?
p.s. Now burning latest Kanotix live cd
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Kadischi
This will be, but I don't know if it will fully be ready for fc5
-
That would be wonderful, cybrjackle!
I have ATI Radeon 9000 Pro
and I haven't tried it on xorg 7.0 at all, but that review mentioned that the author had to hack his way though xorg.conf
Actually I can hack my way through xorg.conf quite well (as most ATI card users can :D ),
but, as I said, I don't have the time to play with that now (deadlines!!).
$ /sbin/lspci -v | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 Lf [FireGL 9000] (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Sounds like yours isn't extremly new so I would say with 97% that it would work, 3% just cause I needed a number and didn't want to make a 100% promise :)
-
Thanks for the info.
And how about xorg? I'd really like to have X with my ati. :)
p.s. It was not bought with Linux in mind, and I don't have the money to buy nvidia
What kind of card do you have?
Is it supported in other xorg 7.0 distro's that you have tried? I would assume it works, but I dunno, I have one ati and thats my laptop and it works. But you give me the model number I will see if others are using it.
The latest debian is just as easy to install as anything else imo. So that shouldn't scare you off from giving it a try.
-
I read one review (at Linux.com I think) which said that the new F5 is a huge drag for the system resources, namely - it has 512mb RAM recommended and lots of daemons should better be switched off,
and also has problems with ATI cards due to Xorg 7.0(I have ATI Radeon 9000).
That review actually falls under "extremly clueless" person. They were wrong on so many degree's it was really a wasted news day.
60% resources, with no claim to why or stats? If you think I would run a distro on at least 5 box's that was 60% worst than anything else, I would be considered insane :)
I actually think (feel) fedora is extremly fast compared to the majority of distro's out there.
Some interesting stats Dave Jones(kernel guy) did
http://kernelslacker.livejournal.com/35270.html
Here is a post from one of the fc/rh guys
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-mark...h/msg00113.html
I've seen a lot of bad reviews in my time, even for distro's I don't really like but this was just not worth the time was used to review it.

Just to name a few things
Gnome-2.14
KDE-3.5
gcc 4.1
selinux + lots of other security features
open source java stack with apps like ooo/azurues/rssowl/eclipse build against gcj
mono stuff
xen
http://sourceware.org/systemtap/
For the most part, the latest software packages that are out.

I've got a few questions about SuSE and Fedora Core,
please answer if you have the time.
1. mp3, divx, xvid, dvd support. Is it easy to set up those, i.e., just some driver install or smthing?
2. what about repos? which has more software available? is there anything like easy-urpmi?
3. the general quality, which of those two you think is more stable and bugless?
4. maybe there's anything else I should know?
First, Fedora Core 5 will be out in 4 days (20th)
With a lot of new goodies that wont be in others :)
1.) Yes, several repo's to add to get all that, I'm running rawhide right now (fc5) and using vlc/mplayer/xine/rhythmbox/banshee all with all the video codecs and mp3/aac stuff
2.) Personally, I use freshrpms/dag/dries and grab ati/nvidia src.rpms from livna. You can also get gui frontends to yum like yumex
3.) Fedora all the way (i sort of hate suse so I might be a little bias) ;)
4.) Fedora kicks a lot of ass, and always comes out with bleeding edge software in each release and keeps it stable. I'm actually running rawhide on a backup server, yeah i know that is a little scary and don't recommend it :)
Just give Fedora/Suse a try and see what you think. I help a lot of people here with Fedora and a few others that hang around here, so if you can't get help on fedoraforums or mailing list, ask here and I'll help you.
-
# yum provides libstdc++.so.5
More than likly it will be some "compat-libstdc++" package.
-
wow...someone doesn't know anything about UI design...
Yeah, it's like they took all the players out there, squashed them together and forgot to slap the ugly out of it.
-
-
I thought it might be something like they had chosen a standard :P
Yeah, ext3 is the standard for fedora/rhel several ext3 developers have @redhat.com in there e-mail addr :)
-
I think I found when I used Red Hat/Fedora, that the only choice you had was ext2 or ext3 and that was it. It did surprise me that they didn't offer anything else during the install.
during the boot up of the cdrom
linux reiser
linux xfs
linux jfs
They just wont support it, and RHEL only comes with ext2/3
-
Over the last 8 years, I've used ext2/3/ricer3 and 4/xfs/jfs
Here is what I prefer
[justin@kainos ~]$ cat /etc/fstab LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1 LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2 devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0 tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0 LABEL=SWAP-hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
[justin@absolute ~]$ cat /etc/fstab /dev/rootvg/lv00 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/md0 /boot ext3 defaults 1 2 devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0 tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0 /dev/rootvg/lv06 /opt ext3 defaults 1 2 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0 /dev/rootvg/lv02 /tmp ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/rootvg/lv03 /usr ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/rootvg/lv05 /usr/local ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/rootvg/lv04 /var ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/rootvg/lv01 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/md2 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/rootvg/lv07 /xen ext3 defaults 1 2

[justin@echelon ~]$ cat /etc/fstab /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol08 /apps ext3 defaults 1 2 LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2 devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0 tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol02 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol07 /opt ext3 defaults 1 2 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol03 /tmp ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol04 /usr ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol06 /usr/local ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol05 /var ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol09 /vmware ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0
If you can't tell which one I like ext3
I've had ricer3/4 and xfs explode more than once, (xfs only once) reiser borked more times on me than I care for so I will probably never use it again. jfs was just horribly slow so nien.

Here is my laptop with the player expanded
Another one showing the plugins/preferences
-
what music/media player are you using in that screenshot? rhythmbox?
banshee(mono app)
It will show the album cover if it finds one too.
I can't decide which one I like best (between rhythmbox/banshee) I don't really like the way banshee libary's the music, but it has some other cool features that are nice.
Oh, the way that is displayed, that is me moving my mouse over the music note next to the date on the panel.

Gnome-2.14 released today.

Your welcome
Keep in mind, something I do with software outside of the "distro" is to have an apps dir in my home. that way if i want the distros gtkpod i have it and i can build my own with special needs something else mods to it, like what your doing. That way I also don't take the chance of messing up other programs. Like when I started to help you with gtkpod, i put it in
./configure --prefix=$HOME/apps
This will create all the bin/sbin/blah/rah/rah stuff in my apps dir, installed by me (not root) and ran controlled by me. That way you could do the same with say that mpeg4ip in your apps.
I haven't taken a look at the compile options for it, but you would do the same for it
cd mpeg4ip
/configure --prefix=$HOME/apps
plus any options you might see from ./configure --help that you want to add in. then build your gtkpod in apps also.
which moderately easy to use distro?
in Other Linux and Unix Distributions

Yeah, you can install vmware from vmware.com pretty easy on fedora. rpm -ivh vmware*
Just a warning, you will need a patch from http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/
http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/vmware-any-any-update98.tar.gz
and NO, fedora didn't crip it so you have to use Petr Vandrovec patch. Petr always creates these patches when the "kernel" breaks something, some were around 2.6.15-git4 broke it.
Yes, even Gentoo/arch/ubuntu/<insert distro here> needs this patch if it is a newer kernel :P
