  1. My favorite: Yeah, they'd rather explain for the millionth time why the Word file attached to your email won't open! I guess by "people" he means the guys running around the office thinking they're God because they have a MCSE certificate. More propaganda from the MS spin doctors.
  2. Oops, my mistake. Saw the English info, missed the "Our recipe." Thanks for the info.
  3. Cool, thanks! I'll just leave it that way then. I have an identical machine to install on also, and I'll be doing that one the same way. The machines are for a company that I work for that is evaluating switching all of their systems to Linux, so they sent the P1s over to test them out on. If I can make them happy with Linux on these machines, I've got a good shot at a wide deployment on a lot of systems for a lot of users who are totally new to the Linux experience, so this could be a very good thing. :D
  4. That's a very cool idea! I love it! Is there an English version of the recipe? I've been thinking about getting into homebrewing and would love to give that a shot.
  5. Reinstalled the whole deal with the vesa driver and it worked! Tried switching to the proper driver for the video chip and it went crazy, so back to the vesa. I also removed a configuration from the xorg.conf file that was out of range of what the card is capable of. I actually got KDE running fairly well on the system, and I'm going to give xcfe a shot. I suspect that will run quite nicely. So, with it up and running using the vesa driver, I have one final question: Is there a problem with running the vesa driver full time? Any risks to the hardware or performance drawbacks?
  6. Well, I'm not sure exactly what the problem is yet, but I did get it to run once. KDE even started up, but since I had logged in as root in failsafe to edit the xorg.conf file, it didn't last too long. I finally got X to load during a regular bootup after several tries, but it froze before KDE loaded. I installed from and FTP server because the CDs were hanging up (same discs I used to install on my Athlon 1600+ box, so the discs should be ok), but I might give the CDs another shot. Maybe if I copy them to the hard disk first. I don't know, lol. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress. The time I got it to run was with the VESA driver, so I'll try using that from the install. If anyone has any recommendations in the interim, I'm definitely open to any suggestions.
  7. Thanks! I'll do that and report back. Before trying the Mandriva install, I installed a copy of Red Hat 7.1 just to check for compatability, etc., and that worked fine. Even ran KDE just great, but I'd like to get something more robust than KDE 1.1 on it, lol.
  8. Hi all. I'm trying to install Mandriva LE 2005 on a Compaq Deskpro 2000 5200 MMX with a Pentium 200 mHz, 160 MB RAM, a 1 MB video adaptor (S3 Trio64 V2/GX) and an 18 GB hard disk. I know this sounds like a recipe for disaster, but I just wanted to see if I could squeeze any decent performance out of it at all. To add to the challenge, I'd like to see if I can get it to run KDE (with all the bells and whistles backed off, of course). Anyway, once I finally got everything installed, it booted up fine (slowly, but fine), but the screen goes black when it tries to load up X. I checked and triple checked the xorg.conf file and everything seems to be configured flawlessly, but it just won't start. Should I keep looking for the problem, or is there a possibility that X isn't going to start no matter what I do? Any opinions or recommendations? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  9. Yep, even did a full reboot just to be sure. Doesn't make any sense to me either, but that's how it happened. I've no idea why.
  10. Hey, that did the trick! The strangest part is that it set my xorg.conf file to the exact same settings that rolf posted. Didn't work when I hand-edited it, but it works great after using HardDrake. Go figure. :D Anyway, thanks for the help everybody. Working great now.
  11. Yeah, that was the first thing I tried. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I was thinking the same thing, could have been a bug that had already been patched. I'm still confused, lol.
  12. Still doing the same thing. Should have mentioned that I'm using KDE 3.3. I tried installing GNOME and booted into that, still the exact same behavior. The only place it seems to work properly is in the system tray (i.e. Volume, Clock, Pager, etc.). It definitely looks like a config file issue, as it isn't limited to KDE, and it doesn't work as it should in programs other than Mozilla. This is definitely weird.
  13. Thanks! I'll give those settings a try and report back.
  14. I removed Mozilla, so I'm using Firefox 1.0.6. In my Preferences>Advanced, the only options pertaining to the mouse are AutoScrolling and SmoothScrolling, and toggling those made no difference. Also, since I've been checking in other programs, it doesn't seem to be working properly in those either, so I'm guessing it's in the mouse config itself, although my experience with editing the xorg.conf file is a bit limited.
  15. Thanks for replying, this has had me boggled for days. :D Here's the relevant bit from xorg.conf: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection That's the only pointing device I have set up.
  16. Hi, I just upgraded Mandrake 10.1 to Mandriva LE 2005. All went well except for one very weird, but frustrating issue. The scroll wheel on my mouse doesn't seem to cooperate with most of my software. The wheel works, but doesn't do what it should. The issue is most noticeable in Firefox and Mozilla. Instead of scrolling the page, it moves back and forward through the session pages. I checked about:config, and it is set properly. I also tried uninstalling both Firefox and Mozilla, deleting the whole .mozilla directory, then re-installing Firefox, and it is still doing it. I'm also unable to scroll in Thunderbird, and in other windows (i.e. Konqueror, etc.), I have to mouse over the scroll bar for it to work like it should (although I can't recall if it was like that before the upgrade). My mouse is a standard, run-of-the-mill PS/2 Microsoft Wheelmouse, and I checked the driver and all looks well. Like I said, the wheel works, but doesn't do what it should, and I'm pretty well stumped. Anybody have any suggestions or have seen this before? I know it seems like a minute issue, but it is really frustrating and I'm not sure what to do, lol. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, and I'm sure someone else might run into this too.
