  1. Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded to Mandriva 2007.1 (installed from One disc). Everything is working okay, except that I can't seem to get a resolution higher than 1024x768. I'm using an LCD with a 1280x1024 native resolution, and my xorg.conf file is configured correctly (as far as I can tell). However, KDE isn't showing any higher resolutions. Anyone have any thoughts? Here is my xorg.conf file for reference:

  2. The problem with the 64-bit JRE from Sun is that it doesn't come with a browser plugin. The amd64 blackdown JRE comes with a plugin, but I'm finding that it has some major stability issues. Browser crashes shortly after an applet is loaded, so that's no good. Could be any number of things causing that, but in my case, it's not particularly useful. When I feel like a project, I may try installing the 32-bit JRE from Sun and loading the plugin through nspluginwrapper. Anyone tried this yet? Flash works great through nspluginwrapper, except that I can't seem to get sound through it. Haven't taken the time to try to fix that yet.

  3. I just switched to a 64-bit system and decided to go for all the marbles with the x86_64 mandriva 2007 build. I had a few hardware issues that would most likely be present regardless of the OS build (nvidia chipset, need I say more), but otherwise, I'm very happy with the performance, and the few other issues have been taken care of. The only things that were really hanging me up were the browser plugins, and nspluginwrapper solved most of that for me, as well as the blackdown jre build which contains an amd64 java plugin. Benchmarking aside, I'm of the philosophy that if you're running a 64-bit system, you may as well go with the 64-bit OS. Unless you have some very specific needs, chances are that someone will have a solution to any problem you may run into. It really wasn't much more trouble than getting things set up with a 32-bit build, and I suspect that down the road I'll be happy that I went ahead with it now. Just my 2 cents. :D

  4. Found some info on the Club forum that got me hooked up. The device is still listed as unknown in MCC, but it is working. Added this to /etc/modprobe.conf:

    alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
    remove snd-hda-intel /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove snd-hda-intel
    install snd-hda-intel /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-hda-intel && { /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; }

  5. Thanks! Here's the info:

  6. Hi, I'm running Mandriva 2007 x86_64, and am having some serious plugin issues with Firefox 2.0. I'm using the mdv rpm of Firefox, and I can't seem to load a single plugin aside from the default ones that are in Fx. No flash, no java, etc. To make things a bit weirder, Sun hasn't released a 64-bit version of JRE with a browser plugin, so they ask that you use the 32-bit version. I'm cool with that, but the plugin will not load. I've symlinked it into every mozilla plugins directory I can find (I've done quite a bit of Fx plugin wrangling in the past, so I know the dozen or so places they can conceivably go), but nothing seems to work. I deleted pluginreg.dat, no help there either. Is this a know issue, or am I just missing something. Thanks in advance for any help!

  7. Thanks again for your help. In MCC, it won't let me run the config tool as the card is listed under Unknown/Other rather than Soundcards. Tried adding that line to modprobe.conf, and after rebooting, it still wasn't showing up in lsmod. As a last ditch effort, I put it in module.preload, and it did load the module after that, but the card still wasn't recognized.

On a related note, I just realized today that IDE devices aren't being detected either, but the IDE controller appears to be configured properly. Worked okay during install, though.

Integrated NIC wouldn't configure either, so I through a PCI card in and got that to work okay, so I'm not terribly concerned about that. It looks like the kernel has all of the necessary modules, something just isn't gelling the way it should. In any case, if anyone has any more suggestions, it would be most appreciated.

  8. Thanks for your help! After looking around a bit more, I think the correct module is snd-hda-intel. I can load it up with modprobe, but can't seem to get my modprobe.conf command right so that it is loaded at boot time. Could I trouble you for a little help on that? Thanks so much!

  9. Hi everyone,

I've been using Mandriva for about 5 years now, so I consider myself pretty familiar with most things. However, I just switched to an Athlon 64 with an embedded nVidia audio device (MCP61V chipset, believe it is the regular n-Force audio). In MCC, under hardware, the device is listed as unknown. Here's the info:

    Identification

    Vendor: ?nVidia Corporation

    Description: ?MCP61 High Definition Audio

    Media class: ?NOT_DEFINED

    Connection

    Bus: ?PCI

    Bus PCI #: ?0

    PCI device #: ?5

    PCI function #: ?0

    Vendor ID: ?0x10de

    Device ID: ?0x03f0

    Sub vendor ID: ?0x1019

    Sub device ID: ?0xa88d

    Misc

    Module: ?unknown

To further complicate issues, alsaconf won't load. It segfaults with this error:

    /usr/sbin/alsaconf: line 435: 3844 Segmentation fault $DIALOG --msgbox "$msg" 20 63

It's a clean install from a full 2007.0 Free disk set, and everything else is working great. Is there a way that I can force a module to load for the device. I imagine it uses the intel8x0 module (although I can't be certain), but without alsaconf, I have no clue how to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  10. I gotta say, I'm very impressed with OOo 2.0. It has everything! I'm still trying to navigate Base, but otherwise I love it. The day I downloaded it, the install instructions for Linux hadn't yet been posted, hence my original confusion. Overall, an extremely nice package that will definitely make OOo an even better contender in the Productivity market.

  11. Oops, guess I was a little hasty in asking that question in the first place. I hadn't realized that the tar was already in RPM. And what a nice package, too! Mandriva menus and all. Thanks for the info on installing it, though, that threw me at first. After that, though, very nice!

  12. My apologies, I wasn't sure how long it took for RPMs to come out. :D

I usually just wait for the next Mandriva version, but I've been so excited about OOo 2.0 that I thought I'd ask. Maybe I'll give the installer a try. I tried it with the beta, and it didn't work so well, but I'll give it another shot. Thanks for the advice!

  13. Just saw that OpenOffice.org 2.0 is out. I used the Beta on Win2k and was really impressed, anyone know of RPMs for Mandriva 2k6 of the new 2.0 flavor? There is an installer on OOo for linux, but I try to avoid those whenever possible for obvious reasons.

  14. Thanks for the reply! Here's the confounding part, it fixed itself somehow. Naturally, I tried rebooting to see if it would help, and it didn't. Later, I booted in to Win2k for something and left it running overnight. Then this morning, I read your post and booted back into Linux to try your suggestion. When KDE booted, Kontact loaded. I didn't even click the button, it just loaded. :screwy: While we're on the subject of Kontact, has anyone successfully been able to integrate Kontact with eGroupware? I tried, and that's where my trouble began. Tried again this morning, and it crashed. If anyone managed to get it working, please pass along any tips you might have. Thanks!

  15. I just upgraded to Mandriva 2006 last night from 2k5 and all went well. I checked out the new version of Kontact and loved it so much, that I migrated everything from Evolution to Kontact. Then, after attempting to set up integration with eGroupware (which I couldn't get to work for some reason), Kontact will no longer open. In fact, none of the KDE-PIM apps will open. I tried running them from Konsole as well looking for some clues, but there were no errors reported. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I deleted the eGroupware entries from the config files thinking that may have caused the problem, but that didn't help.

  16. My first experience with Linux was about five years ago. I bought a book, dabbled with it on some old machines but never really made much use of it. Then I bought a machine with no OS on and it and decided to take the plunge. Installed Mandrake 9.1 and never looked back. Once you get the hang of it, you realize Linux is a beautiful thing. Personally, if Linux cost twice as much as Windows, I'd still be using it. It's rock solid stable, easy to maintain, unbelievably simple to set up software, and runs like a champ! I have a Win2K drive that I use pretty much only for testing web sites for clients on IE and for the occasional Windows-only app. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with Linux. Plus, the new Mandriva I've found to be extremely easy to set up, and if you want an easy way to install software, try out the software installer under the system menu (in case no one else mentioned it). As for the Flash plugin for Firefox, you can do that directly through Firefox. A little bar shows up at the top of the screen telling you that you need a plugin. Click the bar, hit install, and you're done! Couldn't be easier.

  17. Hi everybody!

I'm using Mandriva LE 2005 and just upgraded KDE from 3.3 to 3.4 with the thac RPMs. Everything went great so far except for one minor detail. My monitor is starting to get dim, and under 3.3 I had corrected the gamma through KDE. I believe the program was called kgamma, and (to the best of my recollection) it was in System->Configuration->KDE->System. After the upgrade, my gamma settings were reset, and the program is nowhere to be found. Any idea how to adjust it or where I can find the prog? Thanks in advance for the help!

  18. Even if faster, I strongly advise against using a non-journalized filesystem. So in the journalized category, the faster is ReiserFS. Be sure NOT to use XFS, which is a very good filesystem, but requires more CPU than ReiserFS or JFS.

    Yves.

Thanks for the help! I'll be going with ReiserFS. All in all, I've been pleasantly surprised with this little machine. I first installed expecting the worst and having to tell my client that running a decent Linux distro with a GUI on these old boxes wasn't going to be possible, but my expectations have been far exceeded. In fact, after backing off some of the eye candy on KDE, (aside from the long load time) I've actually found it to be about as responsive as Xfce. Except for the fact that you may as well grab a cup of coffee while you wait for OpenOffice to load, Mandy LE 2k5 gets my seal of approval on older machines for basic office functionality. Would I use the setup for my everyday work? No, but if you need an extra terminal, I say go for it! One other thing that's always confounded me and I've never got around to asking: what's up with the stock fonts? They've always looked really weird to me, and the spacing is awful. Any recommendations on a decent default font to use (especially for KDE)?
