  1. Hi again guys - I'm at lost I've been searching this forum for at least two hours and can't find the answers to my questions so I'm hoping someone will be kind enough to help me. i really didn't know where to post this and if it's in the wrong place please move it to the right location for me. Thanks. I'm a newbie trying to learn Linux but it seems to be a bit overwhelming because I'm used to windows. I have some questions that i need the answer to. If the answer is in the forum and I overlooked it, I apologize; but please send me the direct link to it. 1) In KDE, why doesn't Kmail/Kontact have an option to autocheck email? i.e., every 10 min. Also I notice when you reply to an email, there's no space to start typing your reply. You have to enter down to insert space because the original message is at the top. Any way around this? 2) How do I switch between Gnome and KDE desktops? 3) After my screen saver is on for 5-10 min, the screen goes black. Is there a setting to keep this from happening? 4) How do I install programs that I downloaded from the internet? i.e., I downloaded an updated version of Evolution (2.2.1.1) 5) Are there any updates for Mozilla Firefox? The version I have is 1.0.2. I tried to install AIM and it said my version of the browser was not compatible. 6) Which chat clients are compatible with Linux? Thanks in advance to all who respond. Smiley
  2. Thanks everyone!!! The printer is now set up. :D Smiley
  3. Hey guys - I think I may be confusing people so let me start over. I have a router serving as the gateway for the network. It's not acting as a print server. In addition to the router, I also have a Jetdirect 300x print server which is my printer (HP 841C) is connected to. I have it set up this way so I won't have to leave any of the other computers on to print. Now, what I'm trying to do is set another computer with Linux installed on it and be able to print from it also. I've tried to add a printer from Mandrake Control Center but it's not working. I go through the wizard and get as far as doing the test page but it does not print. What am I doing wrong? Also, when it ask me to select the port the printer is on, how do I find out that? The choices were parallel #0, #1, and #2. I'm hoping some can help because I don't want to buy another printer just to print from the Linux machine. Thanks again. Smiley
  4. Hi - I have a small home network and I need to be able to print from my linux machine. The printer is an HP which is hooked up to a print server which is connected to a Linksys router. The other pcs are WinXP's and connected to the router as well. I have a cable connection. What do I need to do to access the printer? Thanks, Smiley
  5. Hi Heather, Thanks for your reply. I'm pretty new to Linux. I just installed it this week. I clicked on that link you sent but I don't understand what I should do on that page. Like, how do I find out my architecture and where is this console where I suppose to type stuff? Smiley
  6. Hi - I recently installed Mandriva linux LE 2005 and I need some suggestions or links for the following: antivirus, firewalls, and cd/dvd burning. Thanks, Smiley
  7. Hi guys - sorry I didn't respond back earlier but I changed the settings on both drive and it worked. I now have it installed but have many other questions which I will place in the appropriate forum. Thanks for the help! Smiley
  8. Hi - yes I know how to change the settings. I'll give it a try. Will post back when I get home. Smiley
  9. I know I can't boot a dvd from cd rom drive and I never tried to do that. I was trying to boot from the dvd burner. The only option(s) I have in the BIOS is atapi cd rom, floppy, and ide. There's not one for the dvd burner.
  10. I have 1 hard drive (250 gb) - 1 cd rom - 1 dvd burner.
  11. I just checked the dvd disc and all the files are on it. I dragged the MD5SUM file to the toast442 program, clicked on generate checksums and there was a green circle beside it so I assume that the file is ok.
  12. Hi devries and ddmcse, Thanks for responding back. I no longer have the iso file as it burned successfully to the dvd. I did not burn it as a data disc. I double clicked on the iso file and it opened up Roxio to burn it. I tried using the md5 program you linked to but nothing happens when I insert the dvd. Smiley
  13. Hello guys - I'm totally new in Mandriva Linux and interested in installing this operating system. However I'm having difficulties already. I downloaded the dvd.iso version and put it on a dvd-r. The file is 2.04gb. When I insert the disc I get the welcome to mandrakelinux (attached). Then I click on the option to Install MandrakeLinux but nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? My computer specs are: Dell Dimension 4100, 250gb h/d, 512mb ram, floppy, cd drive and dvd burner. Currently I have WinXP Home installed. I tried booting from the dvd drive but it gives me a boot error - it says invalid boot diskette - insert BOOT diskette in A; although the cd rom is set to the first boot device in the BIOS. Please help. Thanks. Smiley
