  1.

    Thank you for replying.

I have tried to follow the instructions in the manual without any success. It seems to me I have installed version j2re1.4.2 in two locations. The first install was in /usr/local. This folder has a padlock? on iit when I view it in Konqueror. I then installed it in my home folder . This is the install that I am linked to in Konqueror (which is opening java applets).

I suspect I am making a fundamental error somewhere (possibly to do with permissions which at this stage of my learning curve baffle me).

According to Konqueror, I have two Mozilla folders in /usr/local/ - one called <Mozilla> and one called <Mozilla 1.7.2>. My attempts at enabling the installation follows:

    [root@localhost laurie]# cd home/laurie/j2re1.4.2

bash: cd: home/laurie/j2re1.4.2: No such file or directory

    [root@localhost laurie]# cd /home/laurie/j2re1.4.2

    [root@localhost j2re1.4.2]# cd /usr/lib/mozilla-1.7.2/plugins

    [root@localhost plugins]# ln -s/laurie/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so

    ln: invalid option -- /

Try `ln --help' for more information.

    [root@localhost plugins]# ln -s/home/laurie/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so

    ln: invalid option -- /

Try `ln --help' for more information.

    [root@localhost plugins]# cd /home/laurie/j2re1.4.2

    [root@localhost j2re1.4.2]# ls

    bin/ ControlPanel.html INSTALL lib/ man/ README Welcome.html

    CHANGES COPYRIGHT javaws/ LICENSE plugin/ THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME.txt

    [root@localhost j2re1.4.2]# cd /plugin

bash: cd: /plugin: No such file or directory

    [root@localhost j2re1.4.2]# cd plugin

    [root@localhost plugin]# ls

    desktop/ i386/

    [root@localhost plugin]# cd i386

    [root@localhost i386]# ls

    mozilla/ netscape4/

    [root@localhost i386]# cd mozilla

    [root@localhost mozilla]# ls

    libjavaplugin_oji.so

    [root@localhost mozilla]# cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

    [root@localhost plugins]# ln -s/laurie/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so

    ln: invalid option -- /

Try `ln --help' for more information.

  2. Pride comes before a fall. I thought I had Java enabled fully in both Mozilla and Epihany (which I do really like) and not in Konqueror. It turns out I can see java applets in Konqueror but not in Mozilla :cheesy:

In Konqueror the path to Java executable is </home/laurie/j2re1.4.2/bin/java>. Can anyone tell me how to get Mozilla fixed up please? I don know what happens to all the ¨ln¨ commands I have tried via the terminal but if they don´t self destruct I must have a mountain of them somewhere . :D

  3. I have become an Epiphany fan after trying Mozilla (which I still quite like), Konqueror, (Which I think if I new what I was doing would be an awesome browser), and Firefox which I gave up on in Linux because it kept on dissappearing somewhere into cyberspace.

I have found that Epiphany has the best fonts on my machine, and runs flash, java etc without any hassles.

  4. I fixed this - I am not quite sure how buy here is what I did.

    Installed Kscd

Downloaded and installed Mplayer and its codecs.

    Installed Bit Media Player.

    Installed Amorek.

    Installed Xmms.

My computer wouldn run Amorek or Xmms properly so I got rid of them.

    Downloaded and Installed Grip.

Found our that I could play a CD through all the programmes left on my computer.

    Ripped tracks from Grip.

Found out I could play the ripped files through any of the programmes left on my computer.

Still couldn´t play the clips from the BBC - Mmmmm

Decided to have a poke around in the Mandrake Control Centre - in particular the sound card driver which on my machine is 82801AA 810 Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller

Found out I could choose a diffrent sound card which was snd -intel8xo. So I did.

I was told I had to install ALSA so I did.

Rebooted the computer (because I am a refugee from windows)

Tested that I could play ripped files and CD´s from all my programmes above - yes.

Went to the BBC sports page and clicked on the Audio/video links and then

Watched and Listened to Sam Allardyce bemoaning his sides performance against Blackburn Rovers!!!! :drum: :D

  5. I think I have succeeded in downloading the codes. I have them in the following directories:

    Usr/Lib/Win32, Usr/Local/Lib/RealPlayer9/Codecs, Usr/Lib/Real, Usr/LOcal/Lib/Codecs. (just making sure) :D

However still no luck - just one question - Ihave Real Player Version 10 installed , why is the terminal message referring to Real Player 9?

Here are the latest terminal responses to the two commands you suggested:

    [laurie@localhost laurie]$ mplayer -dumpstream -playlist http://www.mymotivator.

  7. Thank you :cheesy:

Well I have installed all the codecs from PLF except I couldn´t find Mplayer codecs and urpmi wouldn´t let me install the helixplayer-helix- codecs. Here is the result of urpmq -

    The following packages contain codecs:

    helixplayer-helix-codecs

    helixplayer-real-codecs

    real-codecs

    win32-codecs

    xanim-codecs

I installed the bottom 4 (because I always do things back to front :D ) then -

    urpmi helixplayer-helix-codecs

The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded:

    helixplayer-real-codecs-1.0.1.436-1plf.i586 (due to conflicts with helixplayer-helix-codecs) (y/N)

    So I said N

Still got video but no sound.

Do you think I could have installed Real Player twice in two different locations? :wall:

  8. I think I´ve done it - here is what shows up when I type äbout:plugins in either Mozilla or Epiphany address bar:

  10. Open a console and type: artsdsp <browsername> (or: artsdsp realplay <name of file, link url adress etcetc >

Thanks again : I tried your suggestions with no luck. Both commands opened up mozilla then Realplayer. Here is a sample of what I did at the terminal window - is the warning a clue as to what is wrong?

    [laurie@localhost laurie]$ artsdsp realplay http://www.mymotivator.com/_realmedia/testfile.ram

Real Player opened in a new window and then the sound file. The bar was moving from left to right but there was no further sound. I have noticed a very slight ¨beep¨ prior to the buffereing process commencing.

Love your penguins! WIsh I could get them chirping here.

  11. Thanks for your response. I already had the sound system set as you suggested so this doesn appear to be the problem. As for your second option could you tell me how to do this please.

Probably a mixing problem. In the kde control center, sound, soundsystem, check 'automatic stop' in 1 sec. that way arts doesn't keep the soundcard occupied. (or run the browser, realplayer through arts)

  12. I like to listen the Video/Audio clips on the BBC sports pages. For this I need Real Player so I have just installed it. When I mouse click on a link in Mozilla (1.7.8) the programme downloads the file and plays the video clip but with no sound. I have tested the system sound via the menu system>configuration>KDE>sound >sound system. When I click on the Test Sound tab I get the KDE start up sound. I can run Realplayer from a terminal window but can only get video here also. When I type about:plugins in the address bar of Mozilla I get :

If by some chance you get the notion I seem to know what I am doing it is an illusion. :jester: I am new to linux and have just followed some tips from Google.

If anyone can help me get this going I would really appreciate it.

PS I can play Audio CDś - I just downloaded and installed Kscd using RPMdrake.

I am really staring to enjoy linux since I installed Mandrake.

  13. I am new to linux (4 months). I tried Fedora but have recently switched to Mandrake. I had gotten used to seeing ¨myname@localhost$" in a Fedora terminal window. I now get myname@(none)$. Have I missed something in the installation or is this OK?
