  1. ok, progress maybe. I followed the advice as far as I could from the above post. I have the tar file of firefox in /home/largegroh/firefox.

I extracted it into the same folder. now i have the tar file and a mozilla file.

at this point i am lost again. i double clicked the mozilla file

    and it has 62 items- 12 files(1.2 mb total) - 50 Directories

there is no installer to double click to get the install that I can find.

more than likely i am missing something again. will check back later for the guru's answer. i am slowly muddling through but do not seem to be getting smarter.

i thought i had it before but for the usr/X11R6/bin/xauth thingy.

  2. urpmi mozilla-firefox is the console error I keep getting.

the mirrors i have sellected are:

    Contrib: Belgium (http://ftp.belnet.be)

    Plf-free: Australia (ftp//ftp.planetmirror.com)

i may have had someothers yesterday and don't really know how to clear them out.

edit: almost success!! i was able to get firefox in the list to install and install started. stopped with error:

    usr/X11R6/bin/Xauth is needed by install

    mkxauth-1.7.8mdk

    ??????

  3. ok guys, all this sounds good, confusing but good. you are getting way ahead of me though. i pent several hrs yesterday trying to get firefox installed with no luck yet. therefore i am still at the one distro stage. lol

I tried to follow your layout Artic but I could never find firefox using either the easyurmpi or the mcc. The mcc looks like it should be easy to use but ....

i apparently have not gotten the mirrors set up right or something. it always gives file not found or in the case of the mcc firefox is not in the list.

apparently i need more detailed step by step instructions. it is somewhat humbling to not be able to do this since i have worked with windows for many years and seldom have trouble. sigh

  4. one of the important things about linux that you will learn sooner or later is that there is no "default" application for many things. you can always choose between your favorite application. e.g. for webbrowsing, you can decide if you want to use konqueror, mozilla, firefox, lynx, opera, epiphany or even others. same goes for desktop envrionments, terminals, editors, office apps,... in linux, you have choice. and lots of it. no one forces you to use only "internet explorer", like a well known company in redmond. ;)

ok sigh. i got firefox exe dl'd. am guessing I missed something above or you assummed i knew. I am used to double clicking an exe file and it installs. guess that does not work in linux. I am feeling very dense atm but ...how do I actually install the firefox exe file? :juggle:

  5. No, Firefox would run in addition to, is just a web browser.

    Konqueror would still remain.

As arctic said (many thanks for joining in, and all the info re dual/triple distro installs!), you can get from easyurpmi.

Your urpmi sources are an easy way of getting software, without having to worry about downloading direct from eg: mozilla and installing.  The easyurpmi link gives you the commands to type to add main, contrib, updates, jpackage, plf-free and plf-nonfree.

That way you can browse what software is on these lists, and then install as and when you need them!  :P

ok i will try the urpmi above.. will get back to u tomorrow probably..running out of time today. thx again

  6. ok, i will lay out my situation and hopefully some linux/computer guru will lay the solution out for me. :P

I have winxp installed on my primary HD (60 gig)

I have just picked up a second HD (120 gig) and installed it as secondary HD

I want to set up the second HD as a Linux HD with 3 partitions for 3 different distros.

I want whatever other partitions that are needed for Linux: home, share, etc

atm the linux hd is unformatted. I have tried creating partitions with 7tools PM and I can make them fine but they are not seen from windows (maybe normal) but I don't seem to be able to put any installs there either. I tried Simply MEPIS 3 test 2 and when it asked for where i wanted it I could not type anything in the box and the drop down had only the word 'none'

I am sure it is something I am doing/not doing when i creat them. they show up as 'primary' partitions inside my partition maker but not elsewhere. I am lost.

If someone can talk me through it with mandrake maybe I can get it to work with others as well.. shrug.
