  1. scarecrow I have this sound chip on board: After a couple of re-boot's my sound is back. Strange since I haven't changed anything. My interest in this is some problem with playing audio CD and DVD's. DVD's with different zones, Europe, USA and Asian. I would like to use Amarok as a standard media-player. When I insert a audio CD it load kdeCD player and when I insert DVD I am often told it cannot be played. I have a set up according to ARtee configuration so it should be able to play all zones but it don't Do you have any idea what is missing in my setup?????
  2. Hi all, I have been following this topic: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=30151 Trying the following procedure as written by scarecrow: First on my 2006 as root: "alsaconf not found" because it was not installed so I tried "alsa.conf" and then "hell break loose" After reboot I get this error message: My KMix dont run and cannot be started. and [root@hutch arne]# urpmi kdemultimedia-kmix The package(s) are already installed. In mcc service alsa is stopped and cannot be started and my sound is gone. How do I get my sound back????? In mcc software I am told: So do I need it or not ????
  3. lawsonrc, I have GeForce 6200 on my desktop and I downloaded from nvidia website and installed driver dated 051205 and 11.5 Mb. the driver also configure Xorg if you like. After that I get around 3.200 FPS, compared to powerpack driver around 400 FPS.
  4. dexter11, Thanks for reply. Yes I also believe it was 'auto' makng the mess. For people using nvidia graphic card should use 'urpmi --auto-select' because it shows which files/packages for you to accept thereby give people a chance to avoid the problem. With the original nvidia driver I get 3,300 FPS and I am happy.
  5. Yes maybe Ian. Actually it could also be the plf-free upgrade who destroid the function of the the original 2006 nvidia. I am not shure. I still wonder how AaRTee could get it to work with the original. Maybee some day I will know. Even though I am not sure, somebody should put up a big warning for newbie not to update this nvidia.......plf driver running urpmi --update --auto-selet and instead run 'urpmi --auto-select' and check that this 'dkms-nvidia......plf is not included. More people have the same problem, i.e. Where we crahed on the other post yesterday. Marry Christmas, Ian
  6. ops.... Ian you are to fast. I had the same problem and fixed it this morning Download the file "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8174-pkg1.run" from nvidia web site to your home directory /home/something. The correct file is dated this dec 5 2005, 11.5mb if I remember right. Check that the kernel source is installed ls -l /usr/src/linux if it reports something listing linux pointing to linux-2.6.12.12 or similar, then the kernel source is installed. If not, you can install by checking what kernel your running: uname -a and make a note of the version. Then: urpmi kernel-source and it'll most likely list what kernel-source choices you have. You can then choose the relevant one, so: urpmi kernel-source-2.6.12.12 or whatever the rest of the filename is to get it to install. Make sure that the dkms driver for Mandriva is removed: urpme dkms-nvidia if the file doesn't come back, try this to find exact filename match: rpm -qa nvidia now to copy the driver over: cp /mnt/windows/downloads/nvidia filename /home/"something" (or whatever your home directory is) To install just type: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8174-pkg1.run Installer asked if I wanted it to download kernel interface from nvidia website which I refused since I didn't have a internet connection at the time. Installer confirmed it will compile the kernel interface Installer then installed the driver and asked if I wanted it to confiure X11 for me which I happily accepted. Then I reboot and graphic desktop is back working nicely. I hope this do the trick for you
  7. Hello Guys, The kernel source was installed Then I run: rpm -qa nvidia nvidia-7676-5mdk urpme nvidia-7676-5mdk After copying NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8174-pkg1.run into my /home/arne I run: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8174-pkg1.run Installer asked if I wanted it to download kernel interface from nvidia website which I refused since I didn't have a internet connection at the time. Installer confirmed it will compile the kernel interface Installer then installed the driver and asked if I wanted it to configure X11 for me which I happily accepted. Then I reboot and graphic desktop is back working nicely. Thank you Ian for standby and help PS: Flightgear work as a charm
  8. Sorry Ian, what is "Before it was 200fps with the so called great working mandriva one." Here it is late night. I will install the driver first ting tomorrow. How do I check that I have kernel source installed?? Thanks
  9. aRTee Thanks. So this was not a bad signature warning but an uncompleted download. That's make sense to me. Since installing this killed my original nvidia driver I feel I have no choice but to install the new downloaded driver. Or..am I wrong???
  10. Thanks Ian, How do I check that I have kernel source installed?? I have downloaded the following driver to my fat32 folder which I use to share files between XP and linux: Linux Display Driver - IA32 Version: 1.0-8174 Operating System: Linux IA32 Release Date: December 5, 2005 with the file name: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8174-pkg1.run 11.5Mb Can you confirm that this is the right driver????? Since it is the same filename as you wrote in your last mail I suppose it's OK
  11. Hello guys, Today when I booted my PC in linux my GUY, graphic mode is gone. I believe the reason is due to the update of the nvidia driver namely 'nvidia-8174-0.1.20060plf'. This is certainly not compatible with mdk06. How can I fix this in linux text mode???? Any help will be appreciated since I feel helpless without internet connection. I can certainly us XP as a fall back even though it must be embarrassing for linux. A speedy and safe reply as a christmas present will receiva a big hurra as we say in Norway Ian, You are right a have to update the driver, but how, since I cannot use linux and need to approach nividea on the web.
  12. Ian, So according to this everything is updated, right...??? I tried to start 'flightgear'....No change, it still don't start?????? Then I reinstalled 'flightgear' by 'urpme flightgear' and 'urpmi flightgear' according to this: [root@hutch arne]# urpme flightgearremoving flightgear-0.9.8-1mdk.i586 [root@hutch arne]# [root@hutch arne]# urpmi flightgear ftp://mdk.linux.org.tw/pub/mandrakelinux/...8-1mdk.i586.rpm 99% of 76.9M completed, ETA = --:--:--, speed = 18508 ...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with 0 or signal 13 The following packages have bad signatures: /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/flightgear-0.9.8-1mdk.i586.rpm: Invalid Key ID (DSA/SHA1, Mon 12 Sep 2005 08:55:58 PM ICT, Key ID 445935f878d019f5) Do you want to continue installation ? (y/N) y installing flightgear-0.9.8-1mdk.i586.rpm from /var/cache/urpmi/rpms Preparing... ############################################# 1/1: flightgear ############################################# Flightgear still dont start. I have not tried to reboot yet since I don't believe it will make any difference. Looking at error doe's it means that the download is not completed. If that's the case, why did it it not complete??? I recheck again to make sure everything is updated: [root@hutch arne]# urpmi --auto-select The package(s) are already installed [root@hutch arne]# urpmi --auto-select --auto The package(s) are already installed Ian, Thank's for reply. In my opinion the above is not true because is not installed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or if you like installed and 'urpme dkms-nvidia'. This mean even 'urpmi --auto-select --auto' cannot be trusted. aRTee, Thank's for reply. Very interesting and confusing. Reading your last review on 2006 triggered my installation of 'flightgear' It's a massive download for my very variable internet speed. On top of that I did it twice. Reading your installation, configuration and reviews I seldom se you have problems, everything run smoothly. What is your secret????? You have posted heavy comments on 'bad signatures' but concluded that it's OK for now to neglect it. Do you think my bad signatures is of a different kind??? If not, can you please elaborate on why you could install and use 'flightgear' without any force on your mdk06 while I cannot get it running with or without force????? Just for the record I have a clean install of 2006 Power Pack in dual boot but Linux alone on a second hard disk. During this exercise I have learned a lot about 'urpm*' 1. As long as you don't install new software you can use 'urpmi.update updates' followed by 'urpmi --update --auto-select' or similar 2. When you want to install new software always do a 'urpmi.update -a' before you install with 'urpmi --update --auto-select' or as Ian says 'urpmi --auto-select --auto'. Ian, thank you for this, I didn't know this command existed. Finally, I have read on this forum the problem with new driver if you use nvidia graphic card for which a driver is included in 2006 kernel. In my case I use 'Geforce 6200 and Geforce 6800 driver provided by mdk06. Therefore I didn't allow the updated driver 'nvidia-8174-0.1.20060plf'. At the same time I believe 'flightgear' will not run because it needs this update. aRTee, can you confirm this????????? So, what is the safe approach to updated drivers for nvidia Geforce card??????
  13. Ian, Yes it help but one file is missing: So I need to update my media Will this rpm corrupt my nVidea?
  14. Ian, Following your advice I was able to run 'urpmi --auto-select --auto' After downloading I gor bad signatures like this: Then I tried again because the first one had a time-out error due my bad internet connection. Now a get this: I must admit I don't understand this. Any tip????
  15. Is 'urpmi.update -a' doing the same as 'urpmi --auto-select --auto" ?????
  16. Hello Ian, Thank's for reply Yes it downloaded one 'lib*' What is the meaning of this???? [root@hutch arne]# urpmi --auto-select --auto medium "Powerpack CD4 (cdrom8)" is not selected Maybe I need to rebuild the database?????
  17. Hello Guys, I just downloaded "flightgear" from my 'contrib' on a 2006 Power pack updated yesterday with 'urpmi.update updates' followed by 'urpmi --update --auto-select'. When I click 'flightgear the start process goes as normal although slow and then dies and the game don't start. Urpmi reported bad signatures like everything I have downloaded from 'contrib' for 2006. So I paid no attention to it What is wrong or missing?????? I can post any log you want to help
  18. Or, in console as root enter urpme kat
  19. Hello again, My digging into /va/log/syslog reveal some strange competition between Samba and something else "fighting" which one should the main browser for my LAN. When I installed 2006 the last time I did not tick the "server" and then later I downloaded and installed several packages which may compete. This maybe the reason ...or. Some extracts show this: (please excuse the lenght) 192.168.1.1 = linux on dual boot PC which should act as server for 192.168.1.4 = notebook with mdv 10.1. Both with static protocol 192.168.1.2 = I have given the eth1 this name in order to not interfere with eth0, my LAN Can any one shed light on this and how to remedy it????????
  20. Hello guys, I use my PCI firewire card for my scanner. The scanner runs better on firewire than USB. So aRTee, if I stop booting the controller eth1 will the scanner connection still work????
  21. Hello Ian, Thank's for reply. Everything updatet a week ago. I will dig into the log's and see what I can find and report back. Thank's
  22. Hello Guys, Running 2006.0 I sometimes on boot have a problem with with initializing the firewire controller. Verbose boot says "initializing fireware controller ohci1394" and the boot process stop for approc. 2 minutes. Other times it's complete fast. It seems this is random happening. It shows up in LAN as eth1 which I do not use. I have tried to give it some unused IP address but it still occur at random. How can I remedy this completely?????
  23. Ian, I rebuild the database with rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/_db* rpm --rebuilddb Then I installed "drakwizard" and "squid" successfully. My good drakwizard give so many wizards and I don't know which one to choose so have to read more about samba. You have any tip???? Anyway I am happy I didn't need to rebuild my media.
  24. Ian, I have reboted. Installing drakwizard, 6 dependencies and 9 Mb, stop after inserting CD1 and CD4 and I waited 20 min. No messages like "revieve........" I need to replace media "update" I think??????????
  25. I run: [root@linuxhost rpms]# service squid start init_cache_dir /var/spool/squid... /etc/init.d/squid: line 54: 7896 Aborted $SQUID -z -F -D >>/var/log/squid/squid.out 2>&1 Starting squid: /etc/init.d/squid: line 53: 7898 Aborted $SQUID $SQUID_OPTS >>/var/log/squid/squid.out 2>&1 [FAILED]
