  3. It's time for a summary. 1. Upgraded kernel to 'kernel-i586-up-1GB-2.6.12.15' 2. Installed 'kernel-source-2.6-2.6.12-15mdk.i586.rpm 3. Link to kernel-source established with 'ln -s /usr/src/linux-<kernel-version> /lib/modules/VERSION/build' 4. Deleted default ndiswrapper with urpme and downloaded and installed latest version 1.9 5. Check that 'wireless-tools' is installed 6. Downloaded 'WL54driver2.2.6.0.zip' from a link thankfully provided by Qchem. 7. Extracted the 'INF and the SYS, from 'win2k' directory on the driver file, to a separat directory. 8. Go to the separat directory and run 'ndiswrapper -i Rt2500.INF' 9. Run 'ndiswrapper -l' and get 10. Run 'ndiswrapper -m' and get: confirm that the last line is 'alias wlan0 ndiswrapper' 11. Run 'depmod -a' No error messages 12. Run 'modprobe ndiswrapper'. No error meassages 13. Syslog shows 'ndiswrapper version 1.9 loaded'. Which is the version I installed see pkt 4 above 14. I cannot see 'ndiswrapper: driver "rt2500" added in syslog 15. Check cd '/etc/ndiswrapper' and get: The 3 last entries is the right 'conf, inf and sys files' 16. Light is not on in the card which it should. Ejecting and reinserting the card don't bring on the light on the card. 17. 'wlan0: ndiswrapper ethernet device xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx' do not show up in the syslog. Syslog shows this: 18. Run 'iwconfig' gives: 19. Run 'iwlist wlan0 scan' gives ' 20. Run 'iwconfig wlan0 essid 'ESSID' gives Something is missing and this ra0 stuff I believe is wrong.
  4. Qchem, Many thank's for your effort. This is very good news. I have downloaded already Does it mean that ndiswrapper 1.9 cannot be used but version 0.9 is OK Ian, anyway her is the other files: setup.exe 3.6MB start.exe 3.2MB Rt25009x.sys 206.8KB Rt2500.sys 206.1KB
  5. Sent it to your last address. Hopefully OK.
  6. ops.... That was to fast i believe. Please check
  7. When I send I get this. I have deleted your E-mail address which was in the bracket Internal error [554 <>: Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied]
  8. Ian, I am retired so I can send it now if I know your E_mail address.
  9. Thanks Qchem. her is the line 05:00.0 Class 0280: 1814:0201 (rev 01)
  10. Ian, I have a 1 mb Adsl line but I dont get it in the afternoon so upload around 250 - 300 kbit/s The problem is I dont know if the files is inside this file. But I am happy to do it with the biggest file if it's Ok for you.
  11. Thanks If you look at my post opening you will find 3 exe files and 2 sys files all together more than 10 MB so it is big. If I know which one to extract then maybe 8 MB. I am close to give up now.
  12. Thanks for reply. My internet connection has been down 4 days again so sorry for late reply. I have tried several other formats but the messages is the same: "The utility XXXXX is not in your PATH." I dont' know what to add to my path. Scarcrow wrote somewhere that "Ark" work fine as long as you have it in your path. Since you don't use "Ark" what do you use?????
  13. Even embarrassing I must admit I cannot extract the files from the win driver on the CD-rom and I don't know which files to extract. I know it is one 'inf' file and the other one is 'sys'file. I have 3 'exe' files and 2 'sys' files as follows ar500enu.exe 8.4 MB setup.exe 3.6MB start.exe 3.2MB Rt25009x.sys 206.8KB Rt2500.sys 206.1KB I have run 'ark'. The first time it obviously checked and created some links. The second time it replied with this in the end: When I open any of the file in krusader with ark it reports .....msdos-program...not supported archieve format....please choose the format for the file with default "7-Zip Archive" Ok triggers this message: "The utility 7za is not in your PATH." What do I have to add to my path?????????????????? No man page is available. Google searches I have tried and this forum search do not reveal enough information for me to use ark. The package is installed as 'kdeutils-ark' and located on '/usr/lib/menu/kdeutils-ark'. Can anybody help me please
  14. Hello Ian, Thanks at least it encourage me to try that. After all I can risk a kernel crash since I reinstall 2006. The the chip used is the new rt2500 designed by Belkin. Sourceforge have a project to develop a native linux driver for this card and have Beta3 out already. Unfortunately kernel 2.6.13 is not available for 2006.0 and that is the minimum requirement for this driver. I will await any tip on this post. I not successful I will eventually try your approach.
  15. On the back of the card I can read the following serial number: 5AA3E018943 Can that be used to search???????
  16. This is the output: 05:00.0 Network controller: RaLink Ralink RT2500 802.11 Cardbus Reference Card (rev 01) Subsystem: Belkin: Unknown device 701a Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=slow >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- Latency: 64 Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 9 Region 0: Memory at 0ec00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2 Flags: PMEClk- DSI- D1- D2- AuxCurrent=0mA PME(D0-,D1-,D2-,D3hot-,D3cold-) Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=0 PME- I cannot see any serial number. Any tip??????
  17. I cannot find driver for my belkin card on WLAN Adapter Chip-set Repository in wiki. Then the only option is use the windows driver on the install CD-rom which come with the card. According to ndiswrapper howto that is a risky business. Advice please.
  18. Thanks' for reply scarecrow, Yes, I have made the new kernel default. I have another new line in lilo: 2612i586up1GB-15 (/boot/vmlinux-2.6.12-15mdk-i586-up-1GB) Does this line have to be there or can I delete it?????? Will the new kernel-source and ndiswrapper work OK without any other changes????
  19. Sorry for late answer. My ADSL connection have been down for 5 days. Yesterday I downloaded and installed the new kernel, the first in linux. I had to choose between 'kernel-2.6.12.15mdk' and 'kernel-i586-up-1GB-2.6.12.15mdk' and I took the second since my notebook has veri limited RAM. Then I downloaded and installed 'kernel-source-2.6-2.6.12-15mdk.i586.rpm' Rebooting made me confused since the default 'stanza' did not load the new kernel but the old one. In order to load the new one I had to pick the newly created stanza opposite what "easyurpmi howto" says. Using the new kernel I feel it behave a bit differently. I think I installed the wrong kernel. The original installation is 2006.0. It will be nice to know what is the difference between this to kernels???? If I pick the wrong one, can I just delete it with "urpme kernel<version>" after booting back to the old kernel???? I have also installed 'ndiwrapper-1.9 but if I choose the wrong kernel I have to delete both kernel-source and ndiswrapper and reinstall both???????
  20. I found out the kernel source was not installed after all. I tried 'urpmi kernel-source 2.6.12-12mdk and then with kernel-source-2.6.12-12mdk but this package doesn't exist. I choose : All in all something is wrong because I messed it up. I can see that the kernel-source I called for is later than my OS. How can I recover the "ship"??????????
  21. Thanks for reply. I have started the 'ndiswrapper' installation version 1.9 Page 1 (ref to ndiswrapper installation howto) First I run "urpmi kernel-source 2.6.12-12mdk" and it showed a lot of lines like this: I assumed this confirmed kernel source is compiled and installed Then I checked if the link show up in No show Then I run: Which confirm the link exist. According to howto, it says: Frankly I cannot remember done this. As a newbie in this I prefer to go slowly because wireless internet is difficult, hoping that I avoid problem on the route making sure everything is OK. From the above, can anyone confirm that this is done???????
  22. Thank's for reply tyme, I read somewhere that "ndiswrapper" includet in 2006.0 is no good and they recommend to download it directly from sourgeforge?????????????
  23. Hello Guys, I have kooking for a wireless pcmcia card to use on my old Thinkpad. I found a Belkin ralink F5D7010 which have a "rt2500" chip. Then on the Internet I found that Souceforge.net have a project to develop a Linux configurable driver and beta2 was released in Dec. 2005. I think I should support this effort so I bought the card. I downloaded the driver and opened the Readme file and then I got the following newbie chock when reading this extract: Installation instructions for the rt2x00 Modules Minimal requirements: - Kernel # Only 2.6.13 and higher kernels are supported. - Wireless extensions # Your kernel should be compiled with Wireless extensions V18 or higher. - ieee80211 stack # rt2x00 depends on the ieee80211 stack developed by the netdev team. # The latest ieee80211 stack can be found in the ieee80211/ folder # in the rt2x00 module source. This is updated from the netdev-2.6 # git repository on a frequent basis. Which I read: upgrade the kernel from 2.6.12-12 to 2.6.13 and possible netdev-2.6. This scares me taken into account that I have never installed a wireless network. "ndiswrapper" is an alternative solution and maybe easier for me. This solution use the window driver. Since I have only Linux 2006 on this machine can I still use "ndiswrapper"??????? A beautiful windows driver installation CD followed the card. Will "ndiswrapper" allow me to use this CD windows installation??????
  24. Thank's for reply pmpatrick, and thanks' for the tip. I have changed the linux boot in bootloader and tick of all three boxes. I will try your tip when I need it, for now I am happy to put 8139 on the self for a while.
  25. So far, I have only used 'rmmod' to disable '8139co' but it don't survive a reboot. So what command to enter where to prevent it from loading during boot, please.????? The same for disabling "IPv6. please??????? So to the good news. Yes I have another card. 16 bit Chetach EthernetCard-2328 with Belkin F5D5020 Fast Ethernet. It's amazing, I take out 8139 card and plug in the new card and then I can ping the whole world. After reboot can still ping everywhere, Google open fast. I can ping notebook from the desktop. Firefox is running fast on the notebook and Opera is running fast on the desktop. The router reports 2 computers is connected. The strange ting is that this approach, take out and plug in another card, worked the same way in mdv 10.1 and the 8139 card 4 month ago. Even everything seems OK no I will appreciate if you will be so kind and answer my to questions above. I will also like to learn more about network, wired and wireless because my next step is to put a wireless card in my notebook and add a wireless access point to my router. Do you have any tip for books, articles and good websites. Can you recommend wireless pcmcia card and access point that work in mdv2006???? I am glad you hang in even we didnt have much luck, and I have learned several thing to. For me linux is like a long learning road.
