Hello IANW1974 and artic, Big surprice for me this morning when I booted the linux box. the .X0-lock is back and startx still report the following error: "Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again" When I remove it and check that's it's gone and reboot The same error message and the /tmp/.X0-lock is back. What is the meaning of "display 0" Please guys what can I do?
  3. Thanks guys, Yes I think setserial works now but before I can run my modem I am not sure I consider this as solved
  4. Guys, After reboot KDE starts and works, thank you. Please dont forget the setserial. I can confirm the setserial do not work. bash says: command not found. Please help

  9. Hello Artic, I get: Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If the this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.XO-lock Please consult The X.org Foundation support at http: //wiki.X.Org for help
  10. Hello Guys, The command "setserial" dont work in 10.1 official says some guys in LinuxQuestions.Org. Is that right?????? They say you need to install a rpm package? Secondly my KDE have crashed. Even after reboot it do not load. Kan I run the upgrade and get it repaired??? If yes howto???? or how can I get it back to work?????? I am close to get my mwave modem to work and am exited so please any advice will be appreciated.
  11. Hello guys, Thanks to Artic for giving a clear answer to my question about BIOS upgrade. It saved me around 100 USD. As you can see in my last mail "mwave" is included in 10.1 and can be activated with "modprobe mwave" but mwavem and mwave.conf is not there. Thanks to DragonMage for making it so clear for a linux newbie. The control program is not included in 10.1. Thanks also for the link to rpmseek.com. I have downloaded "mwavem" and will now 'make a run for it and keep you posted'. As a experienced win user I am not used to drivers without configuration/control software. The more I learn about Linux the more different it is from win. Thanks for the help and I am exited about the possibility to finally get my ACP modem working after 2 months of struggle. Arne :D
  12. Hello Devries, Thanks. the latest driver cannot be found in IBM since they have reorganiced the web site. Other sources tells me that the driver is included in mdk10.1. The command "find / -iname 'mwave*' gives /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/kernel/drivers/char/mwave /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/kernel/drivers/char/mwave/mwave.ko.gz Is this the right one. If yes should I continue from 2.2 Building and install the source. If yes 1. Use "tar xzvf mwavem-yyyymmdd.tar.gz" to unpack the distribution. I have mwave but not "mwavem" and what is yyyymmdd? =the date today? What was the answer to my question. will an BIOS upgrade considerably improve my ability to install modem, printer and...........?????????
  13. Hello guys, Thanks for reply. Here is the spec: IBM Thinkpad 600 Pentium II 266MHZ 128mbRam, 4Gb drive dedicated to Linux (/ 2,5Gb, swap 0,5Mb, rest Home),Winmodem Mwave (ACP) modem (Mwave 3780i DSP}, Sound chip Crystall42378, Logitech optical 3 button + wheel, NeoMagic 128XD TFT 13,3 inch 1024x768 16bpp. External USB 56k FaxModem with serial connection, Canon S820 with 6 inkcartridges. My Desktop XP Pro sp2 have Internet connection. Please, both ACPI and APIC is disabled. So please tell me will BIOS upgrade have a considerable positive impact on my problems. It is important for my progress in Linux that I get a modem and a printer to work. please help.
  14. Hello all, I am running only MDK 10.1 on an old thinkpad. I have problem with internal Winmodem and external USB 56k FAX modem and printer. I cannot install them and they are not recognized during install. In my search to correct it I have found in /var/log/messages that both ACPI and APIC is disabled. The ACPI due to old BIOS. Linux installer cannot enable the disabled APIC. Can this be the reason for my problems. I can update my Bios but I have to by a new battery in order to do it. Since I use the thinkpad only to learn Linux I will appreciate if someone could clarify this question. :o
  15. Hello Rolf, Abiword is up and running smoothly. I installed 5 dependencies first and then abiword. I am still working on the modem issue. So for my understanding. It looks like these dependencies are some sort of Linux drivers or ad-ons or both. I wonder if this drivers/ad-ons could be included in the application itself thereby ease installation of new application. Make it easier for new-bees as well. So why are they not? or rather what is the reason for this approach? When I was coming down to the last dependencies each of the last two when running "rpm -i" was referring to the other one as needed so I had to force the installation with "--nodep" on one of them. Does this mean that either of them could be installed first, or what....... Please explain it will help me get Linux under my skin. Any way thank's your help, it was a small victory for me. Arne
  16. Hello Rolf, I had to do something else for a couple of days. I have found an "enchant....." On the mirror site you showed me in your last reply. I will try to install this and if no other dependencies turns up I will proceed with the abiword installation. Actually I have a soft modem in my Thinkpad 600 namely mwave. I have tried before to install it but at that time I totally unfamiliar the command in Konsoll. I think I should try to install it again since it vill allow me to use urpmi and I have to do it sooner or later anyway. I will keep you posted. Arne
  17. Rolf, Running rpm libenchant gives the same Warning as for rpm abiword and then Failed dependencies: enchant = 1.1.2 is needed by Libenchant1-1.1.2-3mdk "Man enchant" gives no manual entry for enchant. Sorry this is totally "Latin" for me. How many backwards dependencies have to be solved to get abiword working. Any tip or advice will be appreciated Arne
  18. Rolf, The first 2 searches confirmed its not in my packages. Then I go: Index of /ftp/mirror/mandrake/official/10.1/i586/media/contrib where I find this: Libenchant1-1.1.2-3mdk.i586.rpm Now I will try to install the dependencies and then abiword. I will report back to you with the result. I am grateful for your response and help. Arne
  19. Hello, I try to install abiword in Linux since I use this program in XP as well and Ooo is to heavy for my my old PII 266 MHZ. Run RPM on "abiword-2.2.7-1.1010.1mdk.i586.rpm" I get the following warning: program name as mentioned above and "V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 8b9e12ab" I am new to this and my question is: what is the meaning of this? does it mean that I should not install abiword to avoid problems with my installation? Furthermore I get 3 failed dependencies: libenchant.so.1 libfribidi.so.0 libwv-1.0 so.2 The to last one I have in my packages 10.1 OFFICIAL and can install. The first one is not in my packages, maybe because I did not install Gnome. I have tried urpmi but since I have no Internet connection on my Linux machine it's no help. I have a memory stick with FAT to communicate between this machine and the Linux PC Can anyone tell me where and how I can get "libenchant.so.1" file or do I have to reinstall linux with Gnome included. Please go easy on me and be detailed and clear. I am 3 weeks into Linux training Arne

    Modem driver

Thanks for your advise No luck and autodetecting in Linux far far from the quality in Windows. Earlier I try to install the winmodem and therefore I deleted that connection. Then I rebooted with external modem connected and in harddrake it turned up as ppp0 after I set Autodetect modem. Then I entered maually the login to my IP provider and linux tried to log on. Then I got the following message: "The system doesn't seem to be connected to the internet. Try to reconfigure your connection. I tried several times but same message I have only tried ttyS0 since my laptop have only on serial port. Should I try the other tty ports? I dont know what kppp or DUN in windows is, never used it. Is it neccesary or easier to reinstall 10.1 with the external modem connected? As you understand Linux is only a few days old on my computer and I don't know how to use the Konsole. Do you know where I can obtain user knowledge in using Konsole Anyone have any tip

    Modem driver

I have winmodem on Thinkpad 600 (Mwave/ACP modem) (Mwave™ 3780i DSP)and have heard that IBM have made a binary driver for mandrake 10.1 but I not been able to locate it and the link on the web-site I read it do not work since the IBM web-site have been changed. Anyone have a tip where I can find it? All installation efforts I have maid without this driver fails I also have a 3Com Robotics 56K Fax-modem, Product # 455630-01 and serial number 238SI3KCOPSY. With serial connection. This maybe is a better and simpler solution Can anyone tell me if this hard-modem can be installed and how. I am a new to linux and would like to use the graphic environment to install it and please use step-by-step how to install. I appreciate every tip/help/advice
  23. Hello KN-san540 I would rather prefer to use the internal modem since I have linux on Thinkpad and it's not nice to carry an external modem around. I am lucky since I have a extrnal Robotics fac modem 56K also and can plug that in if I cannot get my internal Mwave/ACP modem (Mwave 3780i DSP) working. I have posted reply under hardvare forum and I hope to get some feedback on the modem problem. I cannot get a decent fixed phone line where I live so broadband is the blue for me. Good luck to you
  24. Hello AussieJohn, You remember me from some days ago? After several installation tries I have finally got Mandrake 10.1 up working. I did choose to delete every thing about windows 98SE and dedicate the PC to Linux. With 5MB I think I have nice setup. The notebook is an old machine from 1998. The main problem was to find the right graphic setting for my laptop screen. Having sad that what a nice system Mandrake has made. The graphic is stunning and I like it a lot. I have not got it under my skin yet but I am impressed with the logic and user friendliness. I have got my optical mouse and the USB working, but the mouse wheel do not work. No the struggling starts. Install modem and printer. After 2 days still not lucky. I will fix it because I don't give up easily. Thank you for help and advice. I may turn into an addict. Arne
