Mandrake won't boot after restarting from completed install.

Hi,

I've installed Mandrake 9 on my Compaq 4220T laptop. Bar a few issues, installation went fine, and I've decided to use lnx4win with GRUB.

So, anyway, installation completed, the machine reboots, I select Linux from the GrUB menu. The Mandrake Linux page comes up from there, but then nothing happens. It justs gets stuck with a flashing cursor, like in command prompt.

Any ideas what the problem might be? Please, keep it simple, I'm very new!

If you made a boot floppy during the install you can try booting off the floppy and see what happens. It sounds like your bootloader is not configured properly. If you can boot from the floppy and get into MD 9, you can reconfigure the thing by going into Mandrake Control Center>Boot>BootConfig. If you didn't make a boot floppy, there may be ways to get at your bootloader and reconfigure it but I wouldn't call them simple. Probably your best bet would be to reinstall, make a boot floppy and try again.

Is your graphics card GeForce4 or something new not supported by XFree86?

I had the same problem, fixed it my installing NVIDIA drivers and updating the XF86Config-4

file..

I had the same problem with Mitac MiNote 6133. I found great help on www.linux-on-laptops.com. It was caused by something called "Make cpu idle calls when idle". You have turn it off via rescue. It took about 8hrs ;( but now it works and I am happy  I am newbie, so I don't understand very much what I just told you, but it helped me

Good luck
