veeral
Hi everyone! I have a good news as well as bad news. I have been struggling to find a nice guide to make intel wireless drivers work on a toshiba satellite centrino laptop and finally I have been able to install and configure them. But now the problem is that when I type ifup eth2(my wirless card), it tries to determine an ip address for some seconds but then fails everytime. So, technically I am still living on the same island of problem. When I type iwlist scan, I get a list of all the access points in range but my laptop deosnt connect by default to anyone ( as someo of them don't require a key). I wanted to confirm if I have to enter the key (or password) in Hex format. I have already enetered it in hex form. Please help me with this and help me end my week long struggle...I will also post the guide I have which has error free drivers and firmware...Also, please let me know if mandrake 10.1 (community version) has some functionality like connecting to wireles through graphical mode as it is in windows. veeral
Hi all. As it can be read from the topic's title, I can't get an IP address and after a little work I have been able to find out that the network is always down even though I type ifup eth2 ( my wireless ). I am pasting everything that can help you to understand what's wrong in my configuration. I read somehwre on this forum that one has to change the DNS address in some file which has the default address of the router. I don't know what that means and how I find out the new address. I also remember some ipv6 problem which was mentiotned by some expert in response to similar ifup eth2 not working problem in this forum. I am new to linux and I really don't know how to go about all this. I really need to have wirless in my laptop for my research work. Please help me. I am pasting the outputs of various commnads as the following: [root@localhost hostname.d]# iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. eth1 no wireless extensions. eth2 unassociated ESSID:"APT 215" Nickname:"localhost" Mode:Managed Channel=0 Access Point: 00:09:5B:FB:FA:EA Bit Rate=0kb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:6669-6E69-7368-6564-0000-0000-00 Security mode:open Power Management:off Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:62 Missed beacon:0 sit0 no wireless extensions. veeral
Your encryption doesn't look properly configured, to me. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I am sorry but I am new and I don't know if there is a problem in the encryption, what it is and how can it be overcome. I greatly appreciate that you replied. If possible, please help me get this working. Thanks.
veeral
i guess i can connect to Access Points which do not have any kind of encryption key involved. as i noticed it shows that i was connected to a free network but i couldn't open any page in mozilla. the signal strength was 40/100. but i want to get connected to my n/w which has wpa encryption and tkip protocol. as soon as i switch to this n/w i get disconnected and then never connect to any n/w. are there different settings for wpa encryption? please let me know... adamw
You need the wpa_supplicant package installed, and a fair following wind (the WPA support in 2005's drakconnect was hacked in at a late date and is rather kludgy). As root, run 'wpa_cli', type 'status', and tell me what you see. For reference, when it's working, it should look like this, roughly: Selected interface 'wlan0' Interactive mode > status bssid=00:04:e2:b2:d0:12 ssid=SMC pairwise_cipher=TKIP group_cipher=TKIP key_mgmt=WPA-PSK wpa_state=COMPLETED Supplicant PAE state=AUTHENTICATED suppPortStatus=Authorized EAP state=SUCCESS >
adamw
Oh, one thing I noticed with WPA is that drakconnect doesn't seem to handle it right if you type in the actual _key_. If you type in the _phrase_, it does work. For me, anyway.
veeral
i installed the mandriva 2005 limited edition and while configuring the wireless it did ask me wif i wanted wpa enabled and i clisked on yes. I configured my wireless through ndiswrapper which is an inbuilt facility in this version. But i don't know what to do after that with ndiswrapper. i also installed the ipw2200 drivers and the firmware and hotplugging and all after which it should have atleast shown me the available wireless networks, but in this version, it doesn't. it did show me the wireless networks in mandrake 10.1 community version and it also got connected to the one which did not have encryption. but now, in this version it is a different story. someone suggested to install wpa_supplicant package which i don't know how to. i downloaded the package but i don't know what should be the content of .config file. i tried making a .config file after reading the readme file but it doesn't work. i would rather prefer to connect wireless through the installation of ipw2200, which i have already done but it doesn't show or detect any network. when i do dhclient, it just keeps on saying dhcpdiscover but finally ends up not having any dhcp offers. please help and guide me in the right direction. lots of thanks. veeral
update: i have got wpa_supplicant working, but when i type wpa_cli, it says it is unable to connect to wpa_supplicant. one more thing, even if i change the essid through iwconfig wlan0 essid, it doesn't change it. the essid always remains "off/any". this happens with ndiwrapper as well as ipw2200.
