I have a problem installing Mandrake Linux 9.0. When installing the packages, it stops there, but the hdd light is still on. I read some other posts and they said something about turning "UMDA" off in the BIOS. Could any1 show me how to do this?

I'm a newbie at this, so be detailed :)

I'm not sure if THIS is the solution to my problem (by turning umda off) but I'll give it a try. If you know a definate solution to this problem, then please tell me and show me, Thanks!!

I have a:

AMD chipset

Gigabyte mboard

AMD 1ghz

Maxtor 17gb hdd

128 ddr sdram

NIC card

Refer to your motherboard manual for the exact keys and looks of the bios;

normally, you'd do something as follows:

boot the pc, during the first screen you get to see, press the <delete> key.

(could be another key, sometimes F2 or so)

Then you get into the bios, you can use the arrow keys to navigate.

Find the udma settings, and switch them off if you like.

Personally, I think it's probably something else, but you never know.

Now that you are there, you may want to do the following:

- set the option: PnP OS (plug and play OS) to NO

- Shadow video bios --> NO

- Boot virus protection --> NO

From the Mandrake install guide:

If you want to have your parallel port printer (locally connected) properly detected, make sure that the parallel port mode is set to ECP+EPP.

Can you tell me what you think is wrong, I don't care if it doesn't really work, but I'll consider your suggestions. Thank you.
