  1. Have had a power failure and now cannot get into my gui. The error msg. which comes up says it

Could not open default font 'fixed'

Have looked all over and all i can think of doing (i've already tried reinstalling some 3 times) is to see if i can reinstall specifically the fonts i now appear to be missing.

Any ideas? Have a great afternoon! :)

Running Mandriva 2006, PIII, 500Mhz as my Linux test (read hobby) box.

  2. It seems i have the same prob. i can't get my gui up. Have been looking for 2 days now for a solution. Yours seems to be one of the better ones, but when i type

    [root@localhost root]# urpmf /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz

    XFree86:/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz

which i think is the first command, all i get is a help screen for the command urpmf. I still don't know how to rescroll it or keep it from scrolling off my screen before i can read the first few lines.

i installed Mandriva 2006 free from the 3 CD set on a PIII 500Mhz machine and it had been working great until i tried installing a ttf through the MCC. Arg. Any idea on how can i get these fonts back?

Thanks and have a great afternoon! :)

this happened to someone the other day

    http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?sho...c=14683&hl=font

    their

    /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc

dir was missing......is yours? To find out

    login>su to root>and do;

    ls /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/

if it's missing follow my instructions on the other thread

Yes, that is where the default fonts are! X has to have them. The easiest way to fix that is to force the uninstall of XFree86 and reinstall. The other is to force the reinstall of the pkg.

    /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz

is part of the XFree86 pkg

    [root@localhost root]# urpmf /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz
    XFree86:/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz
    [root@localhost root]# rpm -qa | grep XFree86
    XFree86-server-4.3-32mdk
    XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.3-32mdk
    XFree86-4.3-32mdk
    XFree86-xfs-4.3-32mdk

In X now, I will do this in a terminal to show you how.

    [root@localhost root]# rpm -e --nodeps XFree86
    [root@localhost root]# rpm -qa | grep XFree86
    XFree86-server-4.3-32mdk
    XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.3-32mdk
    XFree86-xfs-4.3-32mdk
    [root@localhost root]# urpmi XFree86

       ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrakelinux/devel/cooker/
    i586/Mandrake/RPMS/XFree86-4.3-32mdk.i586.rpm
    installing /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/XFree86-4.3-32mdk.i586.rpm
    Preparing...                ##################################################
    moving /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb to /etc/X11/xkb linking to ../../../../etc/X11/xkb
    moving /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/compiled to /var/lib/xkb linking to ../../../../../var/lib/xkb

      1:XFree86                ##################################################
    [root@localhost root]#

All done.....of course if you are using the cd's as your sources then you'll be prompted to insert the cd.

  3. Had a power outtage and now when i boot into Linux Mandriva 2006 Free, my gui won't come up but gives be the above error msg.

Also had problems with libglx.a but went to xorg.conf and changed the suffix from a to so as in

    libglx.so

and it stopped complaining. Don't know if this is a fix for the problem or just stops it from being reported.

Any ideas? i've been at this for 2 days now and have yet to find anything that works.

    Have a great afternoon! :)

  4. i understand this thread is about urpmi vs mcc?? since i'm very new to all of this, the last time i had my system i didn't understand that mcc was urpmi but with a gui, so i went through all the hassle of "setting it up". However, since i had to reinstall the Man 10.1 again, i thought i'd check and found this wonderful thread. i haven't seen how to add more sources through the MCC. Is there a way? i think that is why i resorted to urpmi the last time. All the choices MCC offers me are the 3 CDs that i burnt. Can you guys helpl out with this? Thanks! and have a nice evening! :D

  5. Dear sirs:

Well, finally got 10.1 installed on my PIII, 14 in. monitor. However it boots up just fine, except that we don't have a desktop, it just goes to:

[fred@localhost fred]$_ i can login successfully with name and password but then what?

Is there anyway that i can convince this thing to boot into some sort of gui?

We only downloaded, burned and "installed" the three disk set. Am i missing something here? Did we select one of the options that we shouldn't when we installed it? We've been working on this for about a week now / most of the time was taken up with figuring out that both of our CD burners on the machine couldn't read the CDs which had been burned on another, sigh.

Thanks a lot for all your help. Have a nice day!!! :D
