If you really want to move to 10.1 CE instead of wainting a week or 2 for official then load up CE and go to " Easy Urpmi " and set up your sources ( don't forget to ---- urpmi urpmi ---- when you finish )
then as root type init 3 , then log in as root and type urpmi --auto-select
This will update and upgrade 10.1 CE to the latest tree ( remember this will load everything! )
What is "Easy Urpmi"? Is that just another name for "Media Manager"?
Thanks.

Be warned, you're 10.1CE will become Official
Hey, thanks for the info. I did some searching on this site but couldn't seem to find any previous posts.
I was kind of wondering when official was going to be released........
Thanks,
Chad

Well, not sure what the deal was but I did a reinstall and the same issue was not there. All permissions were configured properly.
Thanks for all of your help.

Hello all,
I just installed 10.1CE and have been unable to update the system using the Mandrake mirrors. I've chosen just about every mirror in every country but receive the same error on each. Following is the exact error that I receive:
"It's impossible to retrieve the list of new packages from 'the media_update source'. Either this update media is misconfigured, and in this case you should use the Software Media Manager to remove it and re-add it in order to re-configure it, either it is currently unreachable and you should try later."
I've been trying to reach the servers for about a week so I don't think that they are simply "down". Could it be possible that all of the mirrors listed are simply no longer available and that I would just need to refresh the list? If so, how would I go about retrieving the new list?
This one really has me stumped. It may just be my unfamiliarity of Mandrake.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the help, all. I'm going to look into it a little more. I must have done something during install....just not sure what. I really haven't configured anything on that box, yet, so I could always do a reinstall.
Thanks!

The areas accessible by normal users is in their /home directories. In linux, permissions are not a free for all. So give your user permission to utilize the folders. But I would caution you against universal permissions, since you would lose some of your security. Maybe create a group and add your user to it.
Thanks for the reply and help. I understand how permissions work and all. I just thought it was strange that all of my folders in my /home directory, by default, were locked for my normal user account. This doesn't happen when I install FreeBSD or Slackware.
Thanks for the info.

Hello all,
I haven't tried Mandrake in a couple of years so I decided to download 10.1 Community and give it a shot. The installation went fine on my IBM T30 but after booting into the system for the first time, I noticed that all of my folders are locked. How does Mandrake configure permissions after a fresh install? It seems that I can only transfer files as root. I tried to transfer some files/data from my ftp server to the laptop but was unable to do so with my regular account.
Thanks for the help.

Okay, I've got it. Thank you for your help, folks, you got me thinking in proper technical support mode. The problem is that the lovely folks at Mandrake (or the lovely folks who made the mirrors) have the wrong URLs in the list of mirrors, at least they did for Metalab. I discovered this finally after FTPing into Metalab to go see for myself if there were any updates in there.
Hopefully this will be fixed in the final version. :P
I'm having the same issues with the mirrors for 10.1 Community. How did you resolve this?
Thanks.
