  1. Hi!

I've been running FC5 since its' release date and I've noticed that sometimes, maybe once in 20 days the network disappears.

I think it has been in the moments when I have a hard network use, like torrents, etc.

I can connect, reconnect, etc - nothing happens, although the connection in my network config is labeled as active.

I've usually solved the problem by plugging/unplugging my network cable and doing a few network restarts, to fix the issue (usually takes some frustrating 20 minutes).

Meanwhile on the same internet connection at the same time my small sister's windows pc has no network problems.

Do any of you have the same problem?

I'm labeling this as FC5, because nothing like that (sudden network disappearance) happened when I was using Mandriva and Kanotix.

While I don't think that anyone here can help me with this, I"m just curious, if I'm the only one to "suffer" this. :D

  2. Hi!

Is there anything as easy and functional as Mandriva's diskdrake?

A friend is coming over to put some files on her hdd and I'll need to rearrange and format a few paritions.

Maybe there's a 3rd party app for this?

I really don't know, have been using MCC most of my conscious Linux life. :P

(Although I now like FC5 very much)

  3. offtopic My father called american beer 'socks water', I myself have never tasted one (and hopefully never will). I've read that Budweiser is exporting a special beer to the USA to meet its' food safety requirements (boiling it up and then cooling?).

In Latvia we have a very strong beer making tradition and almost no foreign beers can be bought, because all drink the local ones.

  4. I'm now in the position of writing music reviews for one web site and need to make samples from songs,

so I need a software that can open and edit mp3 files, cut out parts from them and make mp3 format samples (but I'll consider ogg too).

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

  5. I was a very experienced Windblows user , iked new technologies and tinkering with computers, read internet computer mags, etc., probably from there discovered about Linux, but it was my eldest sister who herself is quite good with computers and was using RedHat at that time, suggested me to try Mandrake as a first time distro, when I had asked her for an advice about trying out Linux, so I downloaded and installed Mandrake 9.1, but I only went full time Linux when Mandrake 10.0 CE came out because it was more usable, I knew more about Linux by then AND it had very few problems with my hardware (nothing a newbie like me couldn't fix). (earlier versions had messed up soundcard drivers for my card)

  6. Wanna know what is really gonna kill Linux is the 100 different directions its goes.

Of course it won't kill it!

There are ones that I can boot from a floppy, live cd's, ones for server, others for workstation, diagnostics, security, etc!

No one thing could do this all. That's a strenght, not a weakness.

And if some refuse to use Linux just because there is no easy, one choice, then worse for them.

There is no need that all the users in the world use Linux.

It's ready for the desktop - for me,

    for others I don't care.

  7. Did you disable SELinux? It's crucial that you do.

it's a security layer that eats much resources, but is not really needed if you are not running a server or work with gov. secrets, etc.

You can disable it in ADMINISTRATION -> SECURITY

Also, run SERVICES from SYSTEM menu and disable the ones you don't need.

FC5 is designed both for desktop and server, so you might not need the server parts running.

p.s. For package management I advise you install YUMEX,

just type as root: yum install yumex

p.p.s. what specs do you have for your laptop?

edit: for laptops KANOTIX is a very nice debian based distro
