John, I see your point - wouldn't put it on someone else's machine either.
Works stable and nice for me though - and I get died in the wool windows and mac users saying it looks better than anything they've ever seen....
Now that is worth something to me... ;-)
addr, it is really strange that you can't see stellarium - something must have gone wrong somewhere.
But what if you try to download it and install it directly from a mirror? It should then propose to install all dependencies too...

thanks for the info, and good that you managed to fix the K3B problem.
As for Stellarium, hmmm, what kind of 64 bit system did you install it on? Intel (EM64T) or AMD (AMD64)?
It may also have to do with me running compiz and the 3d desktop....
Did you set that up on that other system?

I'm out of ideas for this one...
A mere Fn+F2 crashes my system, whereas it should just switch to the external vga connector.
I have SLED 10 on this machine as well, there it locks up the graphics, but I can ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X and login again. In Mdv2007 it's a hard lock.
It's a bit silly, but ah well, alt-sysrq-h or alt-sysrq-b will also instantly terminate a Linux system, so it's not like there shouldn't be any 'forbidden' keystrokes.
Anyway, as for debugging, I've kept track of /var/log/messages and /var/log/Xorg.0.log but nothing shows up. Logging in via ssh doesn't help btw, the system is really dead... no response to the keyboard (caps/num lock or even alt-sysrq-resuib) so that's out too.
I have no idea how to go about debugging this one - I would like it most if this key would just do what it's supposed to...
Any hints, tips, ideas?

I managed to get stellarium going, in the 32 bit version on my 64 bit system.
I added the i586 main and contrib sources via easyurpmi, where I opted to have the prefix 32_ for all new repositories, then disabled all regular 64 bit repositories in the gui (mcc - software - select from where ....). Then I deinstalled stellarium. When I tried to install the 32 bit version from the gui, it just didn't find it. So I did
urpmi stellarium
on the command line as root, and it proceeded to install the i586 versions:

As you can tell from the filenames, these are indeed the 32bit versions, and I can now run it normally.
[edit] clarified the 64 vs 32 bit stuff.
This way, all dependencies for the i586 / 32 bit versions get installed, as you can see from the info above.

Does anyone know what the proper way is to start programs to have them on all viewports?
When I burn a disc with k3b, the progress thingy shows up on all 4 viewports, and I'd like to do the same with gkrellm.

I have an x86_64 system and for me, stellarium is also not working - it segfaults.
If you just type the first part of the command, followed by the tab-key, like this:
stell<tab>
the shell (bash) will normally autocomplete it.
I didn't try to install the i586 version yet - it should be possible to run the x86 32 bit versions on an x86_64 bit system with a 64 bit kernel, as long as you have all the required libs. I know the 32 bit version works fine, I use it on my other 32 bit syste1ms.
I have some other priorities, so I'll get back to this one later. Do keep us updated on your progress!

Okay, my mistake - it was that same issue; I misread the /tmp/.X[something] for /tmp/X[something] -- note the dot . in those filepaths.
So deleting the /tmp/.X93-lock file and the /fmp/.X11-unix/X93 (s device?) file after logging off on the terminal did the trick, so I now have to implement the fix.

Yes, sure you can play movies on the second head without wm.
For kicks, kill kwin when in standard (non compiz) kde - make sure you can start it again, you won't be able to make any window active, so make sure you have a terminal window active...
Or with compiz, if video plays too slow but used to be playable on the same machine without compiz, you can play it on :0.0 instead of :93.0, it will be on top entirely, but not drain your resources.
Back to my issue: the errata page is about an AIGLX bug, I'm using XGL / nvidia.
So this bug is not the issue for me, there's something else wrong....

Thanks Spiny, I saw that info, but it seems to me like that's a different issue - I can log off and on again, no problem.
And I have restarted X a number of times in between the logging in, I had to modify the xorg.conf for my dual monitor setup with xgl (which works fine for me, but the second monitor doesn't have a wm or desktop; I only need it to play my videos since it's my projector...).
But anyway, I'll have a look if this :93.0 lock is there after logging off...

I'm having trouble to get all users on my system the compiz / xgl experience.
Seems for my main user it works, then for all others it won't.
A friend of mine was having the same problem, he said it would work if he switched compiz/xgl off for one user, he could subsequently turn it on for another.
Mind you, I'm not talking about user switching, just having more than one regular user defined, booting, logging in as one such user, logging off, logging in as another user - it should be possible to have the 3d desktop for both.
Does anyone know which user files and which system files are involved? (I guess it should be in the drak3d program ....)
Do others also have this issue? Is there a solution?

If you can still send sysrq's you may want to avoid the brutal shutdown by doing alt-sysrq (keep those pressed) + esuib

It's basically the Sync and Unmount ones you really really want to press before resetting the machine.
This often still works if the Nvidia driver has fully crapped on me, but the keyboard still works - as noted when pressing caps-lock repeatedly, the light still reacts. Note that sometimes the system is really locked, caps-lock has no response, but num-lock does - hard reset is all that helps...

I'm getting a 12" laptop from www.transtec.ch - it comes with linux preinstalled (novell/suse enterprise desktop 10) and the same hardware with MSWin would set me back almost 300CHF more (~250US$), so I'm certainly not paying the WinTax...
It's a Core 2 Duo, fully linux supported and certified.
Transtec can also be found as www.transtec.de .co.at .co.uk and as ttec.nl and then some.

Ianw, my wifes machine wouldn't power down anymore.... worked fine with older mandrivas/drakes.
I remember that once it wouldn't power down normally, just stayed on, but after completely disconnecting it from the mains, it would shut off.
Not this time, so I looked and looked, and I finally found the error was that in the BIOS, acpi was switched off, whereas in the system it was turned on.
Other things to try: boot options:
linux acpi=off noapic nolapic
or: acpi=on
and variations/subsets thereof, and disconnecting from mains (when it's off, obviously, and just once should be ok).

afaik, you can just point to the cd and the system takes care of things. Basically, it will read all rpm info about dependencies and what the packages provide, and keep this in its own db - I guess it will use genhdlist, but you don't actually need to know anything about it...

there was a message on mandriva club, they messed up, for 3d desktop you need some package from disc 5 or 6...
Now those discs have been released to standard clubmembers as well.
I think it was
task-3d
or something like that.
Anyway, it may well be that you can install that after adding the main and contrib repos.
After that, drak3d should work.

plf repos sure do exist - use easyurpmi, then select 64 bit - then modify a bit to get the 32 bit / i586 version from the same mirror.

I managed - just did
mv .thunderbird .thunderbird.old
then started thunderbird, not creating anything - no new account, nothing.
then copied the data dir inside .thunderbird.old to the new .thunderbird folder, and renamed it to the data dir there.
Lo and behold, it worked.

I'm having trouble starting thunderbird in my wife's account.
If I move .thunderbird to .thunderbird.old, it starts fine - but as if it's the first time, so without all old emails - which is an obvious no-go....
I just installed Mandriva 2007; before that, she was using 2006; I did a clean install.
What should I do to get things going?

I noticed that after a clean install, you can just open the mcc, then media manager, then choose 'add' and you just have to pick a server.
It added main-update, main and contrib - without me needing any kind of easyurpmi.
We still need it for plffree and nonfree.

I'm just upgrading my laptop to the latest and greatest, and I noticed an ad for Lindvd (from intervideo) during the installation process.
Upon checking on the lindvd/intervideo website, there's nothing recent about it.
Their pages are still the same ones from 2000 and 2003 or so.
So why are they now advertising in Mandriva?
Then I checked on the menu - and: it's there: Lindvd!
So finally there's an official dvd playback program!
Now I just have to fix the sound on my laptop, since otherwise it won't launch..

Okay, it works fine.
Just a few comments:
1- my dvd drive region which was never set, now got set to zone 2. I also have zone 4 discs...
2- no way to skip the uninteresting parts - it's just like a 'real' player where you can't just skip.... I'll be off to urpmi libdvdcss and tread the trodden and comfortable path
3- quality seems to be fine.
So now upon installation, dvd playback in linux is available. Hm, that's a first... Go Mandriva!

Authors are free to stipulate that the original code must be distrubuted intact. (including copyright notiices and credits etc.) and this can (and in many cases is extended to the config tools which are part of the package....)
No, they can't. They can stipulate that for any piece of the code that a new package includes, their credits and copyright is mentioned, but they cannot afaict stipulate that their whole code must be distributed intact. That is what GPL code is all about: use what you need, but make your _changes_ available.
So if you rip 10k lines from a 200k line program, you can just use that, and include that in your new source that you must share if you distribute the program containing the 10k lines to some external party.
Back to the CC issue...
Yes it's needed, yes I find the MCC doing its job fine, no I don't have big issues with it, yes I use it to do those things that have always 'just worked' for me with it: printer sharing, networking, scanner sharing (wouldn't even know how to do that from the command line, what files are involved etc...) and then some.
This is exactly the point I keep trying to make
GUI CONFIG tools != CC.
You don't need to set this up from the CLI....
You can choose from
quiteinsane (Qt) , Xsane (GTK+)
I'm not saying they should only be done from the CLI.... I'm saying GUI tools already exist to do this.
and incidentally the printer config and sharing can be done from the KDE CC.... so long as its the complete KDE CC not a stripped down version!
Yeah, the reason Mdv don't do it this way is obvious: they are a DE agnostic system - even though Mdv defaults to KDE, you can install and run it without KDE (or without most of it), and _still_ have MCC fully functional.
In any case, the question was about the CC, regardless if there are seperate GUIs to get the same thing done. So just answer that question.
My answer, still, is that yes, for larger adoption there should be a single entry GUI (CC) for system configuration.
Due to the way Linux works (layer on layer on layer) I think that there should be a CC for the DE/WM as well, it would be nice to have it integrated into the system CC, but to me that is not required - it would be nicer, but I don't see that as a major barrier.
Feel free to disagree and explain why.
vt1 through vt6 went missing, no getty anywhere

As the description and title say: I don't get any vt's anymore. I didn't change anything about my inittab, it looks like this:
Is there anything wrong with this, I mean, in the sense that it got changed while I wasn't looking and vt1 to 6 are turned off? It does say tty1 ... tty6 should respawn...
Ok, resolved.
I put something in /etc/rc.local without adding the ampersand & so that that process didn't finish.
I didn't realise that that would mean that inittab wouldn't go on with the rest.
I just killed the process /etc/rc5.d//S99local and my gettys showed up.
