  1. ok, I installed version 10 i586...but it still doesn't load. I'm pretty sure it's just because I don't know how to load it. I was able to log in...username and password..beyond that...I'm stuck..back to reading now..

regarding the version 10 that I had downloaded before. it says its a communitiy version..not sure what this is but doesn't matter now..I have the correct one now..

thanks for everyones help. I'll go read on what to do next and than come back and ask for more help.

  2. OH my good grief...I'm never going to get this right I'm sure. Just downloaded version 9.1 ppc but apparently I can't use it now after reading this post...ok..so there's another 3 cd's gone..that's ummmm 12 so far..LOL

It's funny that I'm suppose to download now i586..holy sugar..this computer isn't even a year old...and I guess celeron must suck or something...ok so now I'm redownloading version 10 again..but I'm pretty sure it won't work..because I have it already....that's the one that said something about 32bit version..I wish it didn't take so long to download..3-4hours...than another hour to burn...errrrrr

ok while this is downloading I'll go look at those sites that were suggested....I have tuesday off..so should be able to GET SOMETHING going here.

  3. My computer is a dell inspiron 2600, Celeron 1.200mhz, 520mgs ram, 40gig drive

I definitely dnloaded 9.2 .and made another copy of 1 and still same message: your cpu does not support long mode, use a 32bit .

how wierd is that..I installed mandrake somehow..I'm rebooting and going to try hitting F1 first..see if that brings up anything...

I've also checked out this entire laptop site. Ive read for hours and hours tonight..

    I NEED A DRINK

    :-)

  4. ok, I did not mark my cd's when I dnloaded them and made them so they are all mixed up. I've started each one and none of them will start over and boot up..except one: But heres what it says:

YOUR CPU DOES NOT SUPPORT LONG MODE: USE A 32BIT VERSION

so that's when I went and dnloaded version 10

but I just want to start from scratch as suggested and reinstall 9.2

so...I guess I have to redownload it because I can't find a bootable copy...Do I just go and find 9.2??? anything as long as it says mandrake???

  5. oops I've started too screens..can someone please move my other posts over here...it's under installing mandrake I think.SORRY.....I'll post over there to not reply ..thanks..

I'll now go and reinstall mandrake..I' did mess it up because I remember it asking for a password..but not a username..go figure..

    THANKSSSSSSS

  6. LOL, ok thanks fuzzylizard and Ixthusdan...I will take your advice (s) (such a thing?) and just ask these silly questions. They seem silly to me because it's all so GREEK. What I should really do is just start my setup over. OK, here are some questions. Sorry if they seem tooo basic:

first right now on this laptop I've partitioned 50% of the drive for winxp...

What I've done on the other half is beyond me. I have something on it..I'm assuming it's 9.2????? no clue..no clue how I got a dual boot either but it's there..(amazing)...and I"m serious..no clue how it got there..I just hit enter a bunch of times and pretended I knew what I was doing..LOL

    so from here:

What do I do now? How do I get to some of the basic things like logging in?? I would dearly love to see Linux...if I could get to it...is there anyway to start over without ruining my xp??? it's not a problem if I have to erase that also? Somehow I must have messed up the installation because it doesn't recognize my video or something...or my login name? Whatever it is??? You see I can't ask the questions properly beause I dont' get it..

    sorry

I learn real quick BY SCREWING UP..(I'm serious)

  7. Does anyone know a "link" where I can go and get information on installing Linux 9.2. I mean basic----no nothing about linux site????? I saw it at a customers house and he raved about it....I've got to have and use it...but I need to find something to read..the posts in here are just to vague and assuming...Everyone talks about MDK or whatever and I have no idea what that even means....I just need a site to go to where the answers are more straight forward.....I've spend the last 3 hours or so in here and can't even get to first base..it's so darn frustrating..

    THANKS...

  8. ok I have to keep rebooting to try all of the suggestions on this topic page..

I get the localhosts login..don't know what to log in though??? what name???

but also, something about no video screen..not sure what this means..it's a laptop..can anyone please get me past second base? I may not have even installed it right..I hAD NO CLUE what I was doing for the partiton stuff..I installed xp first.that's easy..but than when I was installing linux..it was all kinda greek..I figured it's a great way to learn it..but I'll need some :help: first ..thanks guys

  9. ya mine are over the 650 for each one..I'm sure it's dnloaded properly..just not sure what to do next..reading stuff in here..trying to get a clue....I was so close with the 9.2 version..it actually made a dual boot..but I can't load it..LOL I'll have to post that here also..maybe someone knows why

  10. ok, I have tried installing 3 versions of linux..finally trying mandrake 10..

    here's my error:

Could not uncompress second stage ramdisk. This is probably a hardware error while reading the data, this may be caused by a hardware failutre or a linux kernal bug?

I have a inspiron 2600 dell, xp pr on 1/2 and another version of linus on the other partition..(that doesn't work either)..any ideas what I should do now??? I'M HOPELESSLY LOST at this point..3 days later, 9 cd's later..I was so excited to try this..and can't get past first base.
