  2. well I was able to get into the section to pick the flat monitor but when I ran the "test" section it gave me an error message that said something about the bios.... ok I'll try the "install" again and see what happens..THANKS
  3. oh dear you are right. I remember picking a standard monitor instead of a digital flat panel...and it's an intel 830 graphics controller which I did pick. I was hoping there was a way to go back and fix things..?? btw, you have a really cool desktop..
  4. upon "startx" a bunch of stuff but mostly like this: No scrrens found-screens found but none have a useable configuration X10 fatal 10 error 10x connection reset by peer on X server after 0 requests, etc.
  5. ok..I can't find what to do next. Is there a specific section here to read? I am able to put in my username and password..but than what do I do??? It seems like it's waiting for me to tell it what to do???
  6. ok, I installed version 10 i586...but it still doesn't load. I'm pretty sure it's just because I don't know how to load it. I was able to log in...username and password..beyond that...I'm stuck..back to reading now.. regarding the version 10 that I had downloaded before. it says its a communitiy version..not sure what this is but doesn't matter now..I have the correct one now.. thanks for everyones help. I'll go read on what to do next and than come back and ask for more help.
  7. Does someone have a better download site. I'm downloading version 10 again i586 but really..I'm not sure this is right because I aleady downloaded it??? Is there 2 versions of 10?????? I already have 10 COMMUNITY D? So I'm assuming that i586 is different...and WILL WORK on my celeron..that's only 1 year old?
  8. OH my good grief...I'm never going to get this right I'm sure. Just downloaded version 9.1 ppc but apparently I can't use it now after reading this post...ok..so there's another 3 cd's gone..that's ummmm 12 so far..LOL It's funny that I'm suppose to download now i586..holy sugar..this computer isn't even a year old...and I guess celeron must suck or something...ok so now I'm redownloading version 10 again..but I'm pretty sure it won't work..because I have it already....that's the one that said something about 32bit version..I wish it didn't take so long to download..3-4hours...than another hour to burn...errrrrr ok while this is downloading I'll go look at those sites that were suggested....I have tuesday off..so should be able to GET SOMETHING going here.
  9. ok, sorry to be so dense...there are these version: AMD64, I586, PPC which is 9.1, I'm downloading that version now seeing as the 9.2 version doesn't work on my computer..gotta be something with the Dell..wierd..
  10. Good grief fuzzylizard, this is puzzling to me how I got this dual boot on here. .well anyway, I'm downloading the Knoppix thing you suggested....is it as cool as mandrake? I'll go find another 9.2 to dnload..maybe there's another verson.
  11. My computer is a dell inspiron 2600, Celeron 1.200mhz, 520mgs ram, 40gig drive I definitely dnloaded 9.2 .and made another copy of 1 and still same message: your cpu does not support long mode, use a 32bit . how wierd is that..I installed mandrake somehow..I'm rebooting and going to try hitting F1 first..see if that brings up anything... I've also checked out this entire laptop site. Ive read for hours and hours tonight.. I NEED A DRINK :-)
  12. ok, I did not mark my cd's when I dnloaded them and made them so they are all mixed up. I've started each one and none of them will start over and boot up..except one: But heres what it says: YOUR CPU DOES NOT SUPPORT LONG MODE: USE A 32BIT VERSION so that's when I went and dnloaded version 10 but I just want to start from scratch as suggested and reinstall 9.2 so...I guess I have to redownload it because I can't find a bootable copy...Do I just go and find 9.2??? anything as long as it says mandrake???
  13. I've made a mistake and started two threads..one over at laptops..can we take the stuff here and move it over there please?? sorry about this..I'll just stick to the laptop site seeing as I've messed it up twice..good grief....sorry people..
  14. oops I've started too screens..can someone please move my other posts over here...it's under installing mandrake I think.SORRY.....I'll post over there to not reply ..thanks.. I'll now go and reinstall mandrake..I' did mess it up because I remember it asking for a password..but not a username..go figure.. THANKSSSSSSS
  15. LOL, ok thanks fuzzylizard and Ixthusdan...I will take your advice (s) (such a thing?) and just ask these silly questions. They seem silly to me because it's all so GREEK. What I should really do is just start my setup over. OK, here are some questions. Sorry if they seem tooo basic: first right now on this laptop I've partitioned 50% of the drive for winxp... What I've done on the other half is beyond me. I have something on it..I'm assuming it's 9.2????? no clue..no clue how I got a dual boot either but it's there..(amazing)...and I"m serious..no clue how it got there..I just hit enter a bunch of times and pretended I knew what I was doing..LOL so from here: What do I do now? How do I get to some of the basic things like logging in?? I would dearly love to see Linux...if I could get to it...is there anyway to start over without ruining my xp??? it's not a problem if I have to erase that also? Somehow I must have messed up the installation because it doesn't recognize my video or something...or my login name? Whatever it is??? You see I can't ask the questions properly beause I dont' get it.. sorry I learn real quick BY SCREWING UP..(I'm serious)
  16. Does anyone know a "link" where I can go and get information on installing Linux 9.2. I mean basic----no nothing about linux site????? I saw it at a customers house and he raved about it....I've got to have and use it...but I need to find something to read..the posts in here are just to vague and assuming...Everyone talks about MDK or whatever and I have no idea what that even means....I just need a site to go to where the answers are more straight forward.....I've spend the last 3 hours or so in here and can't even get to first base..it's so darn frustrating.. THANKS...
  17. ok I have to keep rebooting to try all of the suggestions on this topic page.. I get the localhosts login..don't know what to log in though??? what name??? but also, something about no video screen..not sure what this means..it's a laptop..can anyone please get me past second base? I may not have even installed it right..I hAD NO CLUE what I was doing for the partiton stuff..I installed xp first.that's easy..but than when I was installing linux..it was all kinda greek..I figured it's a great way to learn it..but I'll need some first ..thanks guys
  18. ok...so far I got a dual boot with winxp not bad for knowing NOTHING and I mean NOTHING about LINUX. but I'm not giving up.. so far i have no video.. any ideas?
  19. ok guys..forget about rep;lying to this post..I've changed my mine about using version 10...too many problems while reading the posts..I'll just figure out the other one..thanks..
  20. ya mine are over the 650 for each one..I'm sure it's dnloaded properly..just not sure what to do next..reading stuff in here..trying to get a clue....I was so close with the 9.2 version..it actually made a dual boot..but I can't load it..LOL I'll have to post that here also..maybe someone knows why
  21. ok, I have tried installing 3 versions of linux..finally trying mandrake 10.. here's my error: Could not uncompress second stage ramdisk. This is probably a hardware error while reading the data, this may be caused by a hardware failutre or a linux kernal bug? I have a inspiron 2600 dell, xp pr on 1/2 and another version of linus on the other partition..(that doesn't work either)..any ideas what I should do now??? I'M HOPELESSLY LOST at this point..3 days later, 9 cd's later..I was so excited to try this..and can't get past first base. brenda
